Ionic liquids for energy storage and conversion - DIY

chemicum - 2021-02-26

#ionic_liquid #moltensalt #DIY #aluminum-ion #battery #actuator #supercapacitor
We show how to make an ionic liquid from simple components and construct rechargeable aluminum-ion battery. Future artificial muscles could be working with ionic liquids. We make ionic liquid supercapacitor using carbon powder as electrode material. Electrodes are roll-pressed.
Synthesis of aluminum chloride - urea and EMIm+ AlCl4- ionic liquids.
Other ionic liquids: EMImBF4, EMImTFSI, EMImOtf.

There is one mistake - ionic liquids are non-flammable (word inflammable is used in the video).

I am amazed to see how easily you can make functioning batteries and supercapacitors. Thanks for the great video!

chemicum - 2021-02-27

It was indeed surpisingly easy to make that rechargeable aluminum-ion battery.

DIY Biotech - 2021-02-27

Fantastic! You can tell how much work went into this short video!

chemicum - 2021-02-27

true

Zenzicubic - 2021-12-08

This is amazing! I've never seen ionic liquids being made in this much detail.

Lukegear - 2021-02-27

Amazing video! Always had been fascinated by ionic liquid but couldn't find much good documentation on them :)

chemicum - 2021-02-27

Yeah, there are no other other videos of actually making one

Mechanic Gone Rogue - 2021-08-30

Excellent presentation. I have been playing around with ionic liquids for awhile but always struggled finding good information on them. This video has some great information and is a huge help for me! Thanks so much for posting this.

lllllll396 - 2021-02-27

Very nice deep dive on ionic liquids! And amazing computer simulations!

Mike Avison - 2021-03-15

Great video thanks to you all. Could I just ask what substances might be used as the "binder" to mix with the activated charcoal in a supercapacitor. I would really like to try making that!

chemicum - 2021-03-15

For example teflon solution

orlando guillermo cruz mendieta - 2021-08-14

Increíble video. Apenas estoy sumergiéndome en el tema porque voy hacer una tesis sobre esto y me ha encantado,

Max Foissard - 2021-03-02

Amazing video! Just one question, would ot be possible to make AlCl3-EmimCl ionic liquid outside a closed off environment as you used?

chemicum - 2021-03-03

@Max Foissard it is argon or sometimes nitrogen

Max Foissard - 2021-03-03

@chemicum Would helium work?

chemicum - 2021-03-03

@Max Foissard it will work

Max Foissard - 2021-03-03

@chemicum thank you very much for your time. Would it be ok if i ask any questions in the future?

chemicum - 2021-03-03

@Max Foissard sure

Aadhith Varathan - 2021-12-02

AlCl3 and urea is an ionic liquid with relatively low conductivity of 1 mS per cm. Does adding sodium tetrachloroaluminate (NaAlCl4) improve its conductivity? Will this combined ionic liquid solution work for Aluminium ion battery as electrolyte?

Also, will activated carbon cathode work for aluminium ion battery or do we need pure single layer graphene?

chemicum - 2021-12-02

I saw a paper, where many suitable additions were tested. Indeed the AlCl3-urea is a bit too solid for room temperature and should be heated up a little for a better performance.

Aadhith Varathan - 2021-12-02

@chemicum Thank you very much.

nlabanok - 2022-04-09

Really great work, glad I found your channel.

Aleksey Camodelkin - 2021-02-27

Thank you so much for this amazing video!

stu wilson - 2021-02-26

Awesome information..Keep the great work up..5 stars ***

George Green - 2021-07-20

Does the artificial muscle with EmimBF4 have to work in a glove box?

Mr. VDG - 2021-05-03

Very interesting and informative.

Gamedananimasi - 2021-11-18

Do you charge the battery before used to spin motor or directly use after giving electrolyte ?

chemicum - 2021-11-18

Both ways work since it is rechargeable

SilverFox - 2021-08-28

Really awesome video guys, thanks for sharing. At 2:50 min the lady talks about how you can make a super capacitor by mixing carbon with a binder. Could you please share what the binder is?

chemicum - 2021-08-30

@SilverFox Indeed, we tried urea-AlCl3 ionic liquid from low purity precursors and the result was solid. From higher purity precursors, it was almost liquid at room temperature.

SilverFox - 2021-08-30

@chemicum Ha-ha yes I had the same issue. It keeps crystalizing when it cools! I thought perhaps it was because it wasn't homogenized properly so heated it more and for longer but the result was still bad lol . I wish there was a way and I keep looking for something we can make without expensive glove box and using commonly found chemicals. If you find something please share :-)

Pixl Rainbow - 2021-08-31

@SilverFox I noted that wikipedia lists that AlCl3 decomposes into the anhydrous form at 100 C, and wikipedia also lists that Urea only starts breaking down above 133 C, so maybe setting a hot plate to hold precisely at 105 C will allow you to drive off the moisture non-destructively? Not too certain though since some literature on Urea+AlCl3 seems to suggest Urea can produce decomposition products even if not reaching 130 C.

SilverFox - 2021-08-31

@Pixl Rainbow OK I will try that approach :-) That could work. Will let you know how it goes! I did notice that after it crystalizes and sits for awhile (like maybe a day or two) it sometimes leaves a clear liquid on top which is conductive in nature. At first I thought it was perhaps just water precipitation but it doesn't appear to avaporate and has some interesting properties. Have you come across something similar?

Pixl Rainbow - 2021-09-01

@SilverFox update: looked into it a bit more and I think heating aluminium chloride hexahydrate doesn't dry it out into the anhydrous form. It apparently becomes aluminium hydroxide instead, and the chlorine escapes. So you will HAVE to start with anhydrous aluminium chloride and really make sure it never gets any moisture.

However, if you have anhydrous aluminium chloride which you have reason to believe is contaminated with hydrated aluminium chloride, it can be separated because the anhydrous form will sublimate at 180 C and recrystalize on a cool surface, provided this is done in dry air.

Alan Zimmerman - 2021-04-27

what kind of binder is used for the activated carbon? Does it make a more efficient cell if that process is also done in an inert gas chamber to keep o2 out of it as well?

chemicum - 2021-04-27

binder is teflon in water so adding it in glove box is not a good idea. However, later the electrode is dried and electrolyte is added in argon atmosphere.

Drema Boy - 2021-02-26

Very good video. Good information

Pete Venuti - 2022-05-05

what are good solvents for dilution of these ionic liquids? with what effect on conductivity?
what about bromide instead of chloride?

Pete Venuti - 2022-05-07

@chemicum energy density per pound yes, but of course there's by volume for stationery applications. Bismuth is also a multi valance element that potentially allows exchange of multiple electrons per reaction. Might be scenarios when it's advantageous.

Pete Venuti - 2022-05-07

@chemicum yes my head is spinning with ideas, even as far as liquid semiconductors, fantasizing of a micro fluidic solar powered computer 😜

Pete Venuti - 2022-05-07

@chemicum the potential is only limited by budget and interest (and in my case ability to focus)
What do you think of hydrophobic fulvric acids as a cheap anion?
I would love to pick your brain in the future. Thanks

chemicum - 2022-05-07

@Pete Venuti Bismuth is interesting indeed, it would work already in aqueous solutions

Pete Venuti - 2022-05-07

@chemicum true and dithizone is too expensive.

bk! - 2021-02-26

I want to ask if a substance can exist in its ionic state?
Like can in charged state
Like Fe in Fe+
If yes then how long can it exist?
What are radicals? (Chemistry)

Yes these questions are haunting me so much for so long plz answer or direct towards an answer.

chemicum - 2021-02-26

there must be of course something that stabilizes that charge

skorakora - 2021-05-21

Why, I found this channel that late... I could won all competitions in my schools using this technology...

Dharmi Chand - 2021-03-07

Can you please share some more details over artificial muscle ..

chemicum - 2021-03-07

What exactly? It is like supercapacitor, but made of special materials. It bends when voltage is applied

Meleeman - 2021-03-19

i spent 5 hours looking for this.

EPLA TV - 2021-10-28

HELLO. COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT IS BINDING IN YOUR SUPERCAPACITOR.

chemicum - 2021-10-29

teflon

George Green - 2021-07-20

very elegant research system

Muhammad Kabir - 2022-04-18

Hello please what other electrode can be used apart from graphite?

chemicum - 2022-04-19

This subject is studied heavily, but there is nothing better at the moment

Muhammad Kabir - 2022-04-28

I read that graphite reduces the life of the battery because it degrades over time

chemicum - 2022-04-28

@Muhammad Kabir Still, other electrode materials degrade much faster

hjalfi - 2021-03-13

Quick typo report: due to the unique way in which the English language is formed, 'inflammable' means 'flammable'. I think you want to say that the ionic liquid is 'uninflammable'!

marshall739 - 2021-03-14

Or "non-flammable" or "non-combustible".

chemicum - 2021-03-15

damn, thanks for noting

m zulfiqar - 2022-02-08

Very nice. Is this ionic liquid can also be used to dissolve cellulose.

chemicum - 2022-02-09

true, as the video was already long, I left out other applications for ionic liquids

Venkateswari Dasari - 2021-12-31

Wish u a Happy new year sir 2022 from India. Subrato ..ap ... Xrox .....good usable vedio sir

chemistry guys - 2021-03-03

Hai, what is the current and volts of urea +alcl3 base battery

chemistry guys - 2021-03-04

@chemicum 200eur mean 17,595rupee it is super expensive

chemicum - 2021-03-04

@chemistry guys true. On the other hand, 5 years ago it was 4 times more expensive so the price is going down.

chemistry guys - 2021-03-06

@chemicum Its price is lower because of higher production When it goes like this, price goes down sharply

chemicum - 2021-03-06

@chemistry guys at one point it will be much cheaper - when patents expire

chemistry guys - 2021-03-06

@chemicum OK sir thanks for replying

chemistry guys - 2021-03-20

Hi, i tried to make alcl3+urea ionic liquid but it back to room temperature it solidified

chemistry guys - 2021-03-20

@chemicum I also use cheap feritilzer urea

reeras - 2021-03-20

@chemistry guys i try with urea +salt and form gel like substance

chemicum - 2021-03-20

@chemistry guys it should be purified

chemistry guys - 2021-05-15

@chemicum does recrystallising work?

chemicum - 2021-05-15

@chemistry guys should work

Mohamed Allam - 2022-04-09

what is the type of binder materials that you are using?

chemicum - 2022-04-09

teflon

Mohamed Allam - 2022-04-09

The ionic liquids AlCl3-Urea need rising in temperature but how i can keep it liquid ?
And using it as electrolyte?

chemicum - 2022-04-09

@Mohamed Allam it is half-solid at room temperature, but should be liquid at 60 oC.

mgarvo - 2022-01-06

So cool

@chemicum EMImAICL4

Kenny - 2021-06-11

Chemicum without the chemi 😳

chemicum - 2021-06-12

no, no video without chemi

WTF BBQ - 2021-03-29

So if aluminum battery with this ionic liquid is promising, why hasn't it become popular on the market ?? Aluminum is much cheaper, more abundant, recyclable, and this battery is not prone to exploding like lithium. Also, 2 volts for a rechargeable battery is really good as far as batteries are concerned. Performance may not be up to par with lithium, but the advantages can make up for it.

chemicum - 2021-03-29

It is quite new technology, it needs some time before entering market. There are many scientific papers coming out concerining this topic, perhaps some improvements too.

Pixl Rainbow - 2021-08-21

Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd (Stock ticker TSXV:GMG) is building a factory for Aluminium Ion batteries based on Urea-AlCl3 ionic liquid with graphene and aluminium foil electrodes. The graphene has micropores blasted into it to hold Al3+ ions.

KIRAN JOSE - 2021-03-19

Why don't this meterial use for humanoid robotic blood??

super accu - 2021-03-19

It is kind of more like a solvent - it does not carry energy and oxidizer - like blood has glycose and oxygen in red cells. But of course fuel can be added, for example ethanol to be used in a fuel cell.

Muhammad Kabir - 2022-04-08

Is there a cheap way of producing emimcl in a lab setting?

chemicum - 2022-04-09

@Muhammad Kabir no, but the carbamide ionic liquid could be made at home

Muhammad Kabir - 2022-04-09

@chemicum okay can I use it as the electrolyte for the aluminum battery?

chemicum - 2022-04-11

@Muhammad Kabir yeah, but power is not very high
