Rainfall can release aerosols, high-speed video shows

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - 2015-01-14

Using high-speed cameras, MIT researchers observed that when a raindrop hits a surface, it traps tiny air bubbles at the point of contact. As in a glass of champagne, the bubbles then shoot upward, ultimately bursting from the drop in a fizz of aerosols. (Learn more: http://bit.ly/1wZYXy5)

The researchers suspect that in natural environments, aerosols may carry aromatic elements, along with bacteria and viruses stored in soil. These aerosols may be released during light or moderate rainfall, and then spread via gusts of wind.

I love the smell of rain. It's Magic

lfidarraga - 2019-12-17

And it has viruses and bacteria

Akira0ws - 2015-01-17

In the last statement, E. coli is mentioned as a disease ... actually, it's a bacterium. They probably meant diseases, carrierd BY E. coli.
But altogether very cool vid :D

thanksfernuthin - 2015-01-24

So ionization has nothing to do with it? I thought I read or heard that molecules in the air become charged during a rain and that ionized air reacts with our olfactory system as a smell. That's why the smell is quite universal regardless of ground conditions. It sounded like a great explanation to me! I guess that's wrong then?

Dwagon Drakelord - 2015-04-08

I actually wanted to know if they could make a perfume with that aroma, cus I'd love to buy it...

sola237 - 2016-06-18

amazing. just love this.

Jason Kane - 2015-01-23

Wow, thanks for making this video in Winter, when you can't get the smell.
REALLY APPRECIATED _'

Silvio Justo - 2015-04-29

Awesome :)

Guido Perdomo - 2015-01-14

can the flu be spread by this mechanism too?

Matthew Hanna - 2015-01-20

Where does that smell when it's raining come from? Here you go...

RIK KRAU - 2015-01-20

JUST SOME THOUGHTS

lfidarraga - 2019-12-17

So my mother was always right 😌

cogniterra - 2018-12-04

It all looks so lovely until they mention e.coli!

Syhkane - 2015-01-20

Song?

Bas Bear - 2015-01-19

Why search so far if there's something as simple as evaporation?

Sovey Reemo - 2017-04-18

Evaporation happens with water and other liquids. It doesn't explain by itself why you feel smell of something during the rain. Water doesn't smell by itself.

lfidarraga - 2019-12-17

You'll need 520 F to evaporate the earthy smell compound.

T Scar - 2015-01-24

Umm, how about someone spell 'environment' correctly at 22 seconds.

StarBlaze - 2015-01-20

0:39 - Sorry to nitpick, MIT, but what is a "raintrop"?

Dear Petrichor,
A poem by Zidders

And ode to the smell of fresh fallen rain,
Sweet liquid of life and natures gain.
The ultimate truth of what water's for-
Fertile Earths boon, Dear Petrichor.

Morning dew sparkle would be bereft
without the scent of rain cloud breath.
A touch of ozone after lightnings strike
provides some flavor to this scent I like.

Hot asphalt sizzles with noon day steam
as the rain that drizzles feeds all things green.
Dampened earth emitting a heady flavor
as I close my eyes, inhale, and savor.

When sleep overtakes me, I pass into dreams.
I smell the rain scent through windows screen.
Perhaps while sleeping I'll smell it there,
slumber thunders blessing of cool, wet fare.

Fantastic job guys.

RoboTekno - 2015-01-19

Fancy MIT Scientist, "Good evening everyone. After thousands of dollars, years of research, and enough graduate student papers to fill a janitor's closet, our findings have brought us to the conclusion that water does indeed splash when it hits the ground."

nightmares4q - 2015-01-19

Faascinating.

isaybuckedy - 2015-03-07

I'd love to buy a product of canned petrichor, but I think along with the gorgeous aroma is the breaking of rain and warmth in the air.  It's very sensory and I have terrible grammar!

Bay Area Touge - Paul122157 - 2015-01-21

So does staying indoors during rainy times and coming in contact with a lot of concentrated bacteria get you sick or going out during or after the rain and getting a nice dose of aerosol-ized bacteria get you sick? This feels like a trap... lol

Jared Johnson - 2018-12-05

Ozone? Thunderstorms.....electricity.....ozone
And if this was truly responsible for the smell then one would logically conclude at the smell of rain is unique to the location... So the characteristic smell would not be as universal and familiar as it is.

The rain smell is the ozone from the electrostatically charged air. Didn't we cover this in middle school science class?

maxxtromx55 - 2015-01-22

E. Coli ain't a disease, it's a bacteria

Sean - 2018-12-02

It’s been speculated that we can smell this as a distinct, pleasant odor because, evolutionarily, it enabled humans to trace sources of water in areas where it may be sparse. Those species that could detect the odor could thus detect where water may be during periods of drought.

matt jones - 2015-01-19

just a thought, I guess if these aerosols are carrying disease and bacteria the danger period would be before the rain when you smell them on the approaching wind, as during the rain they are less likely to float around as they would be re-absorbed by the rain.

Dilixty - 2018-11-17

Wait so doesn't this mean diseases are easier to be caught in winter, where it rains so much? But then explain why this wasn't the case during the black death/great plague. Why was it more dangerous in summer? It couldn't just be because there was more pests around, was it?

Darran Whitfield - 2015-01-20

i've known this for years. wtf MIT? all that $$$ for nothing... shmeh

Bibbly - 2015-01-19

This is the kind of research I bash my head against the wall about.
It's something many people have probably observed and recorded, mentioned in passing.
But until someone has it published in a research paper it isn't quantifiable!

Bashing my head against the wall releases complex compounds which were discovered through this type of observant research. My message has been mixed. I am the bar tender of bad ideas and foggy memories, imbibe my words.

tamriilin - 2015-01-20

do i need to call somebody for you? are you okay

Bibbly - 2015-01-20

@tamriilin View the content I've put on YouTube and the answer is yours.

rakmanbaba - 2015-02-03

As a kid I was told that rain water isn't safe to drink even though its generated from what is effectively a purifying process. This is because rain drops collect contaminants from the air as they descend. Am I missing something here? Apart from great video footage, how is the research that rain drops trap air and can be the cause of spread of disease, news?

Milen Maznev - 2015-01-20

Wait, isn't E. Coli bacteria which live in the gastrointestinal tract of the humans? What E. coli diseases are they talking about?

David Naylor - 2015-01-20

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walkerton_Tragedy
About 2500 folks became ill.

Shion0Hibiki - 2015-01-20

E.coli can also be find in feces pass out by any warm blooded animal not just human... i.e farm that use animal feces as fertilizer can have E.coli, that why you need to wash all vegetable before eating.  When rain drop on soil that have feces with E.coli , they can become airborne and the wind can carried them around and we can inhale them... maybe.  Some E.coli are dangerous but most are good for us.

Cilly Honey - 2015-01-22

E.coli O157:H7 is the e.coli found in cow guts, it is toxic to humans. Cows eat grass which requires more powerful bacteria than we have to break it down and digest it.
There are several types of e. coli, most are harmless. Some are lethal.

TheSteadyHunter - 2015-01-24

basically, raindrops can fall miles from the sky striking the Earth, and the resulting collision can cause tiny particles to rise back up from the Earth into the air?   Wow, who would have thought?  The main thing is thanks for calling everyone who has been trying to study average global temperatures to get a bearing on what the Earth is going through "freaks" It sure does prove them retards wrong.

The Tyler Ward Project - 2015-01-17

i actually that smell is created by electricity in the air causing the ions to speed up, thus creating a fresh smell.

RIK KRAU - 2015-01-20

POSSIBLE, VERY COOL . I LOVE THOSE CAMERAS .HERES A THEORY.......IN NATURE FOLLOW THE  WATER CYCLE  . AS RAIN FALLS IT IS PICKING MOLECULES ON ITS SURFACE AND/OR WITHIN THE  DROPS ON IT WAY BACK TO EARTH CLEANSING THE AIR......... (CREATING THE CLEAN FRESH POLLUTANT FREE AIR EXPERIENCED AFTER A RAIN .THAT AIR IS PROBABLY CLOSE TO HOW IT WAS BEFORE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION KICKED IN WITH ALL THE POLLUTANTS DISPERSED IN THE ERA . AIR WAS  PROBABLY EVEN MORE PURE AFTER A RAIN BEFORE THAT ERA THEN. ).......... CARRYING THE MOLECULES OF ALL VARIOUS TYPES IN THE VARIOUS LEVELS OF AIR IT FALLS THROUGH  THE MOLECULES RANGE VASTLY . INCLUDING THOSE THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR AEROSOL SMELLS (DEPENDING WHERE YOU LIVE AND WHAT GETS PUT INTO THE AIR IN THE AREA YOU WILL OBSERVE DIFFERENT RESULTS OF AEROSOLS(SMELLS AND MANY OTHER  DIFFERENT MOLECULES BEING PICKED UP AND DELIVERED TO EARTHS FILTERATION SYSTEM(THE SOIL) . DIFFERENT DAYS ,DIFFERENT CONDITIONS RESULTING IN DIFFERENT MOLECULES EXPOSED THROUGH THIS METHOD WHEN THE AEROSOL IS RELEASED. .........HOW WAS THAT EXPLANATION ?????.

RIK KRAU - 2015-01-20

WTF ??? I NEED PRACTICE.........,TRYING TO SAYSOMETHING LIKE....... AS RAIN FALLS THE WATER MOLECULES THAT MAKE UP THE RAIN DROP ARE PICKING UP A VARIETY OF OTHER MOLECULES ON ITS SURFACE AND WITHIN . (THE AEROSOLS YOU SPEAK OF?? , POLLUTANTS?? , ETC.???) . VIDEO  LOOKS LIKE IT IS A VERY POWERFUL RELEASE OF ENERGY HAPPENING AT ITS SMALL SCALE .IMAGINE IT ON A MUCH LARGER SCALE . YOUR OBSERVATION WOULD BE VERY INTERESTING TO VIEW ON SLOW MOTION CAMERA TYPE AT THE MOLECULAR LEVELS . HOW MUCH MORE MIGHT THAT REVEAL ? MAYBE DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS MIXED IN DROPS AND DIFFERENT LIGHTING COULD REVEAL MORE AS WELL .
