9:50 cineastic masterpiece, I shed a tear over this beautiful scene

Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky - 2016-07-13

Thanks for the compliment. I introduced the characters in that scene in my video, "Thermodynamics and the End of the Universe." If you have not yet already seen it, it is available at the following link.

Just as a fragile peace between the robodog and cosmic bear empires was achieved, the impending heat death made it all seem so meaningless. :(

Thank you!! I've hated that entropy is disorder concept for years!

k1w1 - 2017-06-29

Eugene, thanks for this video. I've lately been watching a few vids about entropy to try and properly get my head around it and this has certainly helped. Thanks again.

Tuan V Nguyen - 2016-06-21

4 years in mechanical engineering but the concept of entropy is still the pain in the neck

Evan490BC - 2018-09-11

You shouldn't have big problems grasping the concept! The main idea is not to think in terms of states but in terms of whole state spaces and probability measures defined on them. The entropy is just a (weighted) measure of how spread out these PDFs are. That's all.

Evan490BC - 2018-09-11

@Tuan V Nguyen ...and entropy wasn't one of them. He expressed his "ignorance" regarding quantum mechanics.

MGTOWTakeru - 2018-12-23

Its not that its difficult to comprehend it is the maths that is hard

NUKE - 2019-10-14

Entropy is a pain in the ass because everyone wrongly associates Entropy with disorder, and as it turns out, disorder is just a word that can be interpreted differently from one person to another... My order is someone else's disorder and visa versa.

What Entropy really is, is the amount of information NEEDED to describe a system
Disorder comes as an emergent property of Entropy but is completely irrelevant and has nothing to do with the definition of Entropy or to what entropy really is.

Entropy "S" is S=Kβ*LnΩ

Whether or not that has anything to do with disorder is a philosophical question...

Entropy expresses the number Ω of different configurations that a system defined by macroscopic variables could assume. Under the assumption that each microstate is equally probable, the entropy S is the natural logarithm of the number of microstates, multiplied by the Boltzmann constant kB.

SUNNITH REDDY - 2019-10-31

Just started studying thermodynamics in second year. My biggest problem is entropy and enthalpy.

Kowzorz - 2016-06-22

Is entropy increasing being necessary tied to the expansion of the actual space of the universe?

Hank - 2016-08-15

@Oliver Witherspoon
"how can the increase in possible outcomes not increase the odds as well?"

It depends on what 'odds' you are talking about. If you mean the more possible microstates you have, the greater the odds of being in any one particular microstate then yes, it will increase the odds. Odds is a general term and not anything with odds has an entropy. If you have a cup with 2 six sided dice it and a cup with 2 twelve sided dice in it, which one has greater odds of snake eyes being thrown? Does that mean it has a higher entropy? Entropy is not defined as 'odds of something happening'.

Entropy is a macrostate variable similar to temperature. The easiest way to think of it is as a distribution of energy... when energy in a system is as evenly distributed as possible (none available to do work) then entropy is at maximum for that system.

David Lloyd-Jones - 2017-09-04

No.

Bradley Layton - 2018-06-17

Kowzorz, Maybe

https://www.witpress.com/elibrary/dne-volumes/11/1/1037

Loren Wilson - 2018-08-15

As I understand it, the entropy of the universe will increase whether the universe is expanding or not. All processes are irreversible, even in a universe that is not expanding.

Rogério Gouvêa - 2019-12-17

I'm addicted to this channel, please make more videos. Maybe regarding solid state physics! ❤️

Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky - 2019-12-17
