Cryogenic treatment of drill bits: tested 2X lifetime and microstructure analysis

Applied Science - 2019-09-04

I bought some HSS stub drills, and treated half of them with liquid nitrogen, which improved their wear resistance dramatically. I also look at the change in microstructure with an electron microscope.

This Old Tony - 2019-09-06

great video as always... answered a few questions I've always had.
They laughed at me when I told them my drills were being cryogenically frozen with me.

Baard2000 - 2020-11-24

@James Dills Taking it so long before the market embraces a new proces was one of the reasons that made me decide leaving the heat treatment industry.....

Travelled in 1996 to Böhler in Austria to discuss a proces I was working on. The answer was clear , I quote : if only 25 percent of what you state is achieved ....Böhler can scrap the recently bought powder metallurgic plant in Sweden as this will make PM steels almost obsolete......

Well...That was clear answer..please go home as we will not work on this proces...

Also the heat treatment plant I was working had not the intention working on it...

James Dills - 2020-11-24

@Baard2000 Love to hear more about your process! We love hearing and looking at industrial efficiencies.

Baard2000 - 2020-11-24

@James Dills In 1993 I started working for a company which produces molds for the sand-lime brick industry. Sand pressed with high pressure in molds to form bricks. Sand and steel...no good match..haha...

Anyway they needed a more constant proces replacing the dirty powder carburising proces. So I have researched lots of processes . In which the 4 big goals had to be met : equal quality of parts , same price of proces , capable of 1200 metric tons of steel ( loads of surface area )and long term stability preventing deforming even when simply stored for years on the shelve.

After 1 year I stumbled on the plasma carburising proces. Which was just out of the research departement of Ipsen / University Aachen. After 1 year of experimenting it resulted for Ipsen in building the biggest plasma vacuum carburising furnace in the world with a plasma generator of 1200 Amperes. This build lastet 1 year and in that time I connected the dots in steel , alloys and this new proces. But the company had no interest in increasing quality as that would result in less turnover ...... Böhler sent me home also , for other reasons....

I could go into more details ....but this is not the place.....

Alan Rachman - 2020-12-14

Tony, I watch your videos and enjoy them and respect your knowledge. I can't say the same for this video however. People should refrain from making videos about technical subject matter when they really don't know anything about what they are showing about. This video is full of erroneous information. He make to many mistakes to address in the time I care to dedicate to it. I am a metallurgist and spent my career in heat treating aerospace parts. The key to the improvement in properties due to cryogenic processing is due to the improvement in the crystal lattice structure. "Crystal lattice" is never mentioned in this video. The only useful information is that cryogenic processing improves the properties of some metals. Forget everything else that was said.

James Dills - 2020-12-14

@Alan Rachman As much as your comments are correct... Many out there aren't scientists... There are many more reasons Cryogenic processing helps increase the wear resistance of all metals including some carbon based plastics. Higher up in the grain structure there are important changes like stitching of the boundary layers between alloys, growth of certain alloying elements that are instrumental as well. I think these videos are stellar. Most people don't understand the process and these types of videos make it simple enough to inform people of the practical uses. After spending many years in the industry I can attest that it takes practical proof to show how well this process works...especially when we've seen between 4x to 11 times the life on components

Practical Engineering - 2019-09-04

Haha showing off all the cool tools in this one. Very interesting!

How awesome to just have a scanning electron microscope sitting around

Random Entity - 2021-03-15

Let's be honest with ourselves, and and join me in admitting that he makes better use of these things than any of us could.

RobotSpider - 2021-03-15

@Random Entity Oh! No question! Completely agree!

sixtyfiveford - 2019-09-08

Tempering and hardening of only certain parts is a common practice. So just putting the tip of the drill bit into the nitrogen to allow it to get as hard as possible but allowing the shaft to remain softer/less brittle.

Not Telling - 2020-10-20

It's a slow process inside an insulated space. While I'm not sure, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the bit was thermally conductive enough for this to not matter all that much.

Johnny Buxton - 2021-03-18

The rare occasion that 'just the tip' is preferable :)

Strange Parts - 2020-11-01

Cool to see you using the Pax Instruments logger. I hung out with Charles Pax in Shenzhen while he was developing it. It's a pretty slick piece of kit, but I haven't seen many people using them.

no reply, why not :-)

@Bong Jovi Huh? That's how I always pronounce the prefix "giga", even on "gigabytes"... though admittedly I'm not a native English speaker, and pronunciation in my native language is closer to "jigga" (but not quite, it's a sound that doesn't exist in English).

I want to build a LN2 generator, but I can’t find the cold head you used and I don’t know enough about how to power it. A more in-depth how-to in your build process would certainly be appreciated!

in the mid 2000s i saw a DeLorean at a local dealship for a few grand. I told my wife all excited that we should get it. She looked at me with a vacant stare.

Needless to say, 48 hours later it was sold.

So you feel envy when seeing all the toys he's got and wanting them yourself.
You would feel jealousy when he's using your toys and there is a risk that they somehow stop being your toys in the future.
