Making a Carbonato-Ammine-Cobalt Complex [Co(NH3)4CO3]

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-11

Some colourful transition chemistry, as we co-ordinate ammonia and a carbonato ligand to some cobalt(III). I also hate ammonia so much that I only ever draw it with 2 hydrogens lol

Stefan Buller - 2019-11-11

Very non-yellow. Congrats on the successful reaction.

Trippie Chris - 2022-01-23

Yes its pigs blood red

Brian Streufert - 2019-11-11

I will say, your ability to articulate what is going on in the chemical reactions without pause and thought is getting a lot better. You're maturing as a chemist and I attribute this to your PhD. Keep at it man. How is it going BTW?

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-13

Hey, I'm glad you think so. I think that's maybe its me getting better with saying things and then editing it down correctly. Cut down enough so that you don't waffle and its boring, but not so cut down that you become hard to understand because you skip stuff or assume a lot of knowledge. Always a hard balance to walk.

The PhD is going okay, thanks for asking! I've hit the half way mark for my project and while the main project isn't doing that great..... ive got some interesting pet side projects that I think are more interesting than the main one lol. The main project requires spectroscopic scans of energetic materials, but so far we're still applying for the permits for these materials.... its been months of paperwork. For stuff I have at home, but that's not exactly allowed so doing it all 'correctly' takes.... a very long time. Which is frustrating.
So it feels even better to get into the home chem lab and have some success! Glad I can still find the time, for now!

not insane - 2019-11-13

@Extractions&Ire how does one causally say they cook energetic compounds at home without getting arrested for terrorism btws?

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-13

@not insane ive always thought: you say it best when you say nothing at all

J H - 2019-11-13

@Extractions&Ire Just curious, what materials do you need permits for? And what are the permits called? I live in the US so it wont apply to me, but I'm just curious what you have to go through to get which chemicals/materials.

Ben Troyer - 2021-10-23

@not insane do it in a lab coat and goggles with preferably an Australian or Norwegian accent. Cause for some reason those are the most friendly sounding. Tho a nasally voice in general can substitute.

Chlorate - 2019-11-11

Metal chemistry makes pretty colours, organic chemistry is smelly, colourless, but sometimes goes yellow.

DED Raion - 2019-11-14

Or sometimes even brown/black. Isn't that wonderful?

cwill212 - 2021-07-10

Yeah but inorganic chemistry is just a gross topic to learn about when compared to organic chemistry

Ben Troyer - 2021-10-23

@cwill212 explain?

cwill212 - 2021-11-11

@Ben Troyer inorganic bad. No fun. Dangerously not fun amount of physics hidden in it.
O-chem fun. Patterns. No math. No bad.

Abigor Anathema - 2022-01-08

I'm assuming organic is the one that yields psychadelic compounds... so that's the winner.

John Morrell - 2019-11-12

I love how every video he's like "we're just going to copy this exactly because it worked pretty well" then immediately tells you some basic component that he's switching out on the assumption it'll work.

dr.rockzo - 2019-11-11

Awesome success! Glad it didn't go yellow for some inexplicable reason.

Mad Scientist - 2020-01-16

Metal ion chem is beautiful. I have been making all sorts of stuff from it simply for the colors. Copper makes my favorite blue and green.

Benjamin Jones - 2019-11-11

I like the more calm vibes in this video. I also like the explosions and fire chaotic vibes. They are both really nice styles that fit well to their respective content.

Drakkar Calethiel - 2019-11-12

Transition metals and their lovely colorfull chemistry, always a pleasure to see!

J H - 2019-11-11

I get so excited when Extractions&Ire or Explosions&Fire2 post a new video.... NOBODY BOTHER ME FOR THE NEXT 12 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS!

Artemis - 2019-11-11

the music made this a very odd exprience, kind of an oddly serene video

2 AM Productions - 2019-11-12

@Extractions&Ire RIP Chemplayer, it was nice nostalgia for sure.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-13

@Fedor Golishevskii I'm seriously impressed you located the tracks! They're both definite highlights from the 200 or so songs that were in the overall upload playlist

Steampunk Astronaut - 2020-09-07

@* Holy crap, I clicked on that without realizing what was going to happen. Thanks for the tracks tho!

rogerdotlee - 2019-11-11

Right on TDep! I LOVE transition metal chemistry. It's what I've been working with when I'm not trying to make more Silver Azide! I really need to expand to Cobolt as Manganese and permanganates (while being totally cool) is starting to run its course with me.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-11

Cobalt is a fantastic element to do chemistry with. It won't do the things silver azide can do though!

Julia Buschermöhle - 2020-04-04

I did the same Sythesis and it is originally from a Paper from S. M. Jörgensen (1894). I think the reason why your yield was better was, that you kinda protected it from light by wrapping it while you boiled it. I did got a yield of 75% by protecting it as good as possible from light. At the end of the paper Jörgensen mentions, that the complex is sensitive to light, when in solution. So I put a small amount of my product in water and let it sit for a day (one in the dark, one in the light) and the one in the light turnt to a dark brownish color (the other one did not change). 🤷🏼‍♀️

Michael Athens - 2019-11-11

Transition metals don't often get the attention they deserve.
Very cool video, definitely some fun chemistry!

Nick bz - 2020-04-13

This was some good stuff! Definitely do more transition metal chem!

lacky2481 - 2019-11-13

Hey mate, thanks for all your effort and time making these videos. Your channel gets me so stoked on my own studies, you're a chemistry beast! Keep up the awesome work, I hope your PhD is going well. Cheers

terawattyear - 2019-11-12

Colors! And to top it off you taught me some stuff about the structure of Co compounds I didn’t know. Very cool vid. Good work and great yield!

TeslaFactory - 2019-11-11

Much nicer than yellow chemistry 😂

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-11

Not a single shred of yellow in this video and it's glorious

caffeinette - 2020-09-06

Gorgeous! I love transition metal chemistry xD
If we were only looking at playing the odds, there are more chances of the ligands re-coordinating in the cis arrangement. But it does make sense that, when the ligands rearrange themselves, trans is favored. The anions as far apart as possible and it avoids having the slightly bulkier NH3 from having an instance of being 90° from three other NH3s.

Danny Robles - 2021-11-03

I really don't know much about chemistry but I have always found it interesting. Your videos are very entertaining, you make chemistry very interesting. I wish I would've had a teacher like you back in high school.

vibzz lab - 2019-11-11

Interesting. Cobalt complexes are always cool. I am also planning on videos on coordination chemistry

Valeriya Frolova - 2021-10-18

Very nice video! I wonder about several points though: 1) what gas is produced after you added hydrogen peroxide? 2) what gas is produced when you are adding extra carbonate salt? 3) Doesn't ammonia carbonate decompose when heated, or in solution this doesn't work like that?
Thank you!

Hazel Chem - 2019-11-12

i really like your videos :D but you should consider building a fume hood so you can work better and saver. i build mine using a tube ventilator and an acrylic glass box that i self assembled. stay save and have fun mfg hazelChem

The Warmedic - 2019-11-11

Keep up the great work mate!

Gudmundur Jonsson - 2019-11-11

As long as there isnt any yellow in your transiton metal chem im so up for all these colors

xGhale - 2019-11-11

Wow. Now this was a seriously cool chemy chem vid, and it wasn't yellow!

Quartization - 2019-11-11

Oh, I’ve actually seen preparation of this complex in my highschool lab. But as far as I remember, most people, who tried it, just got a dark-brown solution without any solids formation.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-12

Maybe that week of uninterrupted crystallization was real good!

zubmit - 2019-11-11

Damn you've grown since last video I saw.
Glad to see your chemistry and channel is going well.. :)

Wesson Smith Jr. - 2019-11-15

You need to make a coordination compound of nickel, Nickel Hydrazine Nitrate (NHN)

David Hill - 2021-01-08

Is the carbonate technically a chelate type formation? I.e. claw. Something like EDTA, occupying to lig and positions? PS love your work… Is it possible to do a one-off page on payment? To watch enough, but would love to see you rig it out/have more fun.

Hunter Wall - 2019-11-12

I love cobalt and chromium chemistry for all the crazy colors they go through.

Bill Smathers - 2019-11-11

You missed the third hydrogen on the ammonias in the 3d structure!

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-11

I missed the third hydrogens on the ammonias everywhere, this is a mistake oops

douro20 - 2021-07-29

One thing you could do with the cobalt(II) sulfate is show that it is paramagnetic.

mmmhorsesteaks - 2019-11-11

No tar, not yellow. Is it even chemistry? Zero stars.

Luis P. - 2020-03-23

yep

jogandsp - 2019-11-12

I loved it (as always)! I believe I remember you saying that you dispose of your waste at a professional waste disposal facility. How much does that cost?

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-12

I must have said that I intend to one day.... I keep all the transition metal waste segregated, and one day ill drop it all off. But never done it yet!

jogandsp - 2019-11-21

@Extractions&Ire If you ever do, let us know how it goes! Also, how much of your chemistry do you do illegally? I always want to do more home chemistry, but I am concerned about unintentionally breaking laws. Not trying to have the ATF throw me in jail for the next 20 years.

BacklTrack - 2021-01-02

@jogandsp just have a tannerite dog chilling near your door. And run at the sound of explosions

Potato Things - 2019-12-29

Oh ammonia, you devil. The demon chemical and I finally clashed in my chemistry class, and I must agree with your sentiment against it.

hugo cesar hernandez - 2020-09-13

excellent demonstration of synthesis, it's a common procedure in the inorganic chemistry lab on UNAM's chemistry school. I have a obsevation about the structure of the complex at the begining of the video. the carbonate ion don´t forms chelated rings of four members because the overtention of the angles; however carbonate ion can forms binuclear complexes with two carbonate bridges between cobalts. Again excellent video!!!

lemon93 - 2022-02-14

thank you so much for confirming to me that carbonato is the way to properly describe a carbonate ligand

Eph-Jay Music - 2019-11-12

Those crystals were so sparkly!!!!🤩

Chemistry'sCuriosities Cannagorilla - 2019-11-11

Very well done! I can't wait to see some BNCP! That is what your after right? I'm currently working on Amino acid light metal Perchlorates.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-13

That's the one! amino acid perchlorates, sounds powerful, best of luck mate!

Chemistry'sCuriosities Cannagorilla - 2019-11-13

@Extractions&Ire Thank you, be careful this compound is a beast!

DAN8137 - 2019-11-11

DAN8137 - 2019-11-11

Fedor Golishevskiy I know

SALEMI - 2021-10-23

The way it goes from pink to blue as it goes from cis to trans is quite poetic

7177 - 2020-06-29

lovely project, sweet tracks! Cheers!

Simon Wilczynski - 2019-11-11

French Canada here... great vids. Keep it up if it makes you happy! J'aime comment tu fais tes videos.

A Broquet - 2019-11-13

I made chloropentaamminecobalt chloride last week, beautiful red violet crystals.

Paul Ste. Marie - 2021-03-20

Damn it. 40 years later, I finally understand what I was doing in Ch 3a.

Noah Swindler - 2020-01-03

That was such an amazingly straightforward explanation of transmission metal chemistry that I had to like the video. Where can I go to learn transmission metal chemistry? Because, frankly, fuck organic chem

daniel ho - 2019-11-11

Keep up the good work

Phoenics Hewson - 2019-11-11

Purple is the opposite of yellow, so that must mean you LOVE purple chemistry, right?!

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-11

The logic checks out!

The Kush Connoisseur - 2019-11-12

When you spooned the cobalt sulfate out of the bag, it looked like a dry spice mix.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-11-12

nutritious and delicious

The Kush Connoisseur - 2019-11-12

@Extractions&Ire its not Yellow Chem, how bad could it be?

ABitOfTheUniverse - 2019-11-14

Dude, Aphex Twin + Chemistry? You get an instant sub!
0:24 I am quite surprised Youtube recommended this video to me, given this. Either your 'accent' didn't trigger the robots, or they're slackin on the job. Either way, I'm glad our algorithmic overlord linked you to me via this video. I look forward to exploring your catalog of videos, both past and future.
