In this video we are making benzilic acid which is an acid and an alcohol at the same time. What are its scary uses you might ask? You would have to look that up yourself I do not want to be responsible for providing people with dumb and truly dangerous ideas. Anyways benzilic acid is also used in medicine so I will show you some sort of medication made from it. Laziest but also clean vacuum filtration ever! 👏
@2:30 That's some strong chemistry ASMR there.
Better ,cleaner and improved yield than mine
Traditionally iv heard that they used cyanide salts for performing the benzil benzilic acid rearrangement as CN- is a better nucleophile than OH-
But anyway it's always best to stay as far as possible from from cyanides
if this was the case i´d use cyanide. even used cyanide instead of the much safer vitamin whatever for making benzoin because i can. If a dangerous reagent leads to a higher yield i will use it
I think you underestimate the sheer mass of Thy's balls!!! 🤣
I watched the vacuum filtration like 5 times !!
THX for this great Video ;-)
Hey I saw that shot on reddit
Benzil - Benzilic Acid Rearrangement ( Kind of what Cannizaro would have been)
You mean the organic disproportionation reaction ??
More like a intramolecular cannizaro
I wonder if that leftover Br would be worth extracting from the waste?
no.
Süs
What happens if it is combined with morphine
is this a precusor to a party drug manufactured in nz
as far as i know it is not
it's indeed a "one time use" heavenly party drug, famously produced in the UK
3-quinuclidinol when? 🥺👉👈
na but i will use the benzilic acid to make something equally terrifying yet legal because only 2 papers talked about it.
@@THYZOID Just looked through some of the Edgewood Arsenal compounds, and indeed there are even simpler ones out there that can be synthesised. Frightening, and also somewhat tempting to make. But personally I'm not intrigued enough to raise my edgelord-status and become a deliriant collector. How do you consider the morals of uploading this kind of chemistry to youtube? Of course all of the information is out there, but I feel like YouTube also reaches a more immature audience than the average paper-reading nerd.
@@THYZOID Also, is BZ itself actually restricted? If so, in which law (talking about Germany ofc)? BtmG?
@@oii_3768 Yes BZ itself is restricted under some sort of chemical weapons law. It cannot legally be made
@@oii_3768 I will upload the synthesis of one incredibly dangerous compound but i will leave out the two most crucial parts. It´s very simple: The planned compound has an extreme potential to cause harm and even most professionals shouldn´t attempt to make it. A lot of planning went into the project before I took the final decision that I will try it anyways. If the entire synthesis was demonstrated it would be way too easy to replicate and thus I need to self censor which I'd normally do not want to do but is necessary.
Another video BZ. 😂
na but i will be making the methyl ester
This use of ethanol is almost criminal!
Beats drinking it!
I dislike it when the amount of reagents is quantified in units of weight and volume. Pls use mol, Avogadro is already rotating in his grave.
mols are used for all calculations and my prep paper but I will not repeat everything in moles in the video. may add the molar equivalents though when showing the chems
@@THYZOID That would be super nice, since you got those numbers anyways 👍 Would make it easier to see the stocheometry at a glance and see which reactant was used in excess.
Cool

2:20 i agree this is beautiful! as a kid i wanted to be a chemist, but became a programmer instead. but i live vicariously through youtube and i really hope your channel grows because ur topics are interesting, ur videography&editing is excellent, and ur voiceover is very clear
@95_Nepentheses - 2023-07-02
Exact same story for me
@fano72 - 2023-08-27
You and me, same career 😅
