Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell - 2018-07-01
Modern life would be impossible without plastic – but we have long since lost control over our invention. Why has plastic turned into a problem and what do we know about its dangers? This video is a collaboration with UN Environment and their Clean Seas campaign, If you want to take action to turn the tide on plastics, go to http://www.cleanseas.org and make your pledge. We also partnered with askscience on reddit – on https://bit.ly/2tVU68d you can talk to experts and ask questions about about plastic pollution today! The cartoonish look of these videos do not at all match the terror I feel when watching them.
Right? 😂 i love it! (Plz kill me)
Isn't it wonderful
Damn right. And how much accurate this channel is: makes me even more scared about the ordeals we are getting ourselves into.
@grapy honestly if there is a great filter cominh i don't think we should pass it as a civilisation given the present circumstances
that's the point of them
"I'm a Barbie Girl in a plastic world"
-Girl, 2020
Life in plastic, it's not fantastic
It's 2020 and thats not true
i readed it as garbage
@vSlopie :3 Are you a relative of Greta Thunberg?
Great joke
Sorry earth, you don’t deserve this.
@jacob wilsonyou dont get it, not all of the ocean is filled with plastic!
@Alona Is User im not arguing I didn't know that you don't believe in god
@Alona Is User yea not all the water is full of plastic but it's gonna be
@jacob wilson oh ok!
It probably doesnt care since a few million years isnt much for it, so it can just wait for us to die out and then repair itself.
"finding way to our bodies" huh ever heard of the kardashians
straight up injecting it
Thermal Paste hue hue hueein
Silicone*
They are mostly silicone, can’t see them putting any plastic inside them.
The rest of the story of King Midas: "Then, the gods had pity on him, so they told him to wash his hands in a particular river/stream. (Sorry, i forgot it's name.) Then, when he did, the gold was washed away from his hands, then everything he had touched, that did turn to gold, turned back to normal. Then, at a party, the king insulted Apollo, which angered Apollo. He then turned Midas' ears into Asse's ears."
WHO THE HELL WRAPS A BANANA?

@Timothy Le how so?
@Azzie Studios search it up
@Azzie Studios might blow your mind but recycling doesn't happen as well as it should, but somehow it's an existing solution that makes making more plastic okay
@Mucho Chen I mean, I might not know that, but that is a reasonable answer, but that's a bold statement of yours to say that it will blow my mind, that ain't a bomb dude, but thanks for the information anyways ^_^
The 11 "R"s rule.
Nature: Please don't throw your trash in the ocean, you are making a mistake.
Humans: Yea yea shut up.
Micro plastic: starts killing humans
Nature: What did i say.

@MaxwellMegaGamer 85 me, a smart american with a brain: sipping tea in Japan whilst laughing at my country for being idiots
"the food ends up rotting away and produces methane"
thats FREE electricity
Right
The problem is, how can we gather spare food and if we can, different foods have different density of preservation which make some foods get rotten really fast while the other take longer.
Funny enough, there are some countries and the us are looking at ways of making natural gas power plants next to land fills to help compat the dependence on coal and oil for our electricity needs. As it still produces CO2 but only CO2. Compare to the oil and coal that produce more CO2 and other harmful substances that get released into our atmosphere.
BigBrain69 too bad it’s a green house gas
For me, it's compost.

single use plastic bag.
Dont people understand yo can use the plastic bag at least 50 times? the "throw away plastic bag", is reusable. you dont have to throw it away...
@Dill Bill Good idea ! thanks.
They aren't nearly durable enough and fall apart rather quickly
I remember finding plastic bags from 10 or so years ago, they were really flakey and could definitely not hold items, I think the plastic bags take forever to degrade but once they get to the flakey stage they're unusable. But yeah, using them before that stage is wise, and I wish more people practiced that tbh
Depends how thin it is, like those made to weight veggies in supermarkets
They get torn apart too easily.
"But somehow, we collectively decided to use this super tough material for things meant to throw away."
Yeah, we're smart that way
@D. Demented Engineer: C99 is ur friend. humans in socio-economic relation to eachother under the capitalist mode of production has killed billions
@KelixKatzGaming would you like to explain then
@Fargonian Productions
the probelm is that "washing" isn't really sterile.
TheBraveGallade I guess I meant sterilized
When will we get 1907 likes?
Say it with me now: we've discovered the great filter !!!
it with me now
We've discovered the great filter!!!
We have discovered the great filter!!! Shit
WE'VE DISCOVERED THE GREAT FILTER!!!
yes that seems legit. But don't we have more than one ways to fulfil great filter role.
7:44 on the cargo ship it says “垃圾”, which means rubbish in chinese
So we’re basically stuck in this until we die because of it.
no ... well it depends on the plastic
but nealy every plastic for the civil maket is eatable (food industry) ecept all other industries where plastic in other form is used
unless WWIII comes first
yes with that attitude
2:34 “stuff to wrap a banana”
Am I the only one thinking he means condoms?😂
No plastic wrapping around bananas is a real thing, which is a disappointment
Actually condoms made of rubber
@Nico Enerlan i know. dumb people!!
what kind of mind do you have
Yes,yes you are
Littering
“it’s just one trash”
- said by every human in the world🌏
lxki not all bins go to the ocean what you on about
not me :)
Most trash that winds up in the oceans, comes from the transportation of garbage vua trucks and barges, not individual people. It's called secondary refuse. Oceanography helps in understanding this.
@MegaChickenfish except a comparatively small section of humans produce most of that trash, but everyone suffers.
@xXGothic_RoseXx okay, I am rioting by replacing everything with... AN UNSTOPPABLE PLANT CALLED BAMBOO THAT WILL BE AN ALTENITAVE FOR WOOD AND SLOW DOWN PLASTIC BLOWING AROUND
0:27 wouldn’t he turn himself into gold?
Gold Digger
@Preston Hall He did.
Oh wait, you're probably being sarcastic.
@Zachary Kadir-Buxton dirty joke
@Aldrin Thomas Jaguar XFR exhaust
It should have been like this, midas: " what ever i touch should become gold if i want to". Simple, then whatever midas wanted only those things will turn gold.
Similarly if use enough plastic upto a limit no harm will happen. so if use more than limit stuff like these happen.
We’ve gone past the limit alreary
sadly midas wasn’t too smart and frankly neither were we..
Him: plastic is finding its way into our bodies
Me: ( eats plastic)
“It already has.”
Im eating while watching lol
Hope i dont get cancer

‘’Did you like it?”
6:03
Imagine going back in time to show this video to the guy who invented plastic right after he releases the product to the world
he would still produce it also its not one single man exploring the hole plastic
There are many differen times of plastic from ABS,PP,PS,PC,POM,PS-LD,.... which where uncoverd in different time periods (1850-1970)
also at this time no one really cared for Environment yet
Oh...thanks for the info at least

Testosterone Is Triggered
So plastic is bad?
Kurgezagst: well yes but actually no
As a video editor and motion graphics artist, I must say In a Nutshell never cease to amaze me with their insane quality content. YouTube is blessed to have them.
King Geedorah I know, but they changed it to kurzgesagt. Their first vids were created by the name of “in a nutshell”
Been a sub since he only had 3k, so I know more than you.
BanditRants bill gates funds him not a joke
which software does he use?? any idea?
BanditRants You mean Kurzgesagt
After Effects for the video, Illustrator for design like the birds; people etc. Basic animation; beautifully compiled.

5:08, maybe other places too.
@Ethan Ansell thank you.
Wow, that's your take-away from this?
THIS. THIS HAS MORE IMPACT ON ME THAN SCHOOL. IN A GOOD WAY.
Just reuse single use plastic bag or recycle when this Plastic is broken.
It irritates me when I see people throw trash anywhere.
The world is your garbage bin mate? Really?
@rjc0234 so true af
@Kira Goro i wish i had him/her (yea i dont have friends XD)
The world should beat their cheeks
mMm i see you dropped out of school working at McDonald’s
@eddy1229 One of my pet peeves...
I feel like kurzgesagt might have something against furbies 🤔
Not furbies ... gremlins, multiplies when touched by water, gets out of control, cause havoc in small town. Good Christmas movie.
Yeah He put cancer to them in the cancer video
Kurtz: when we learned how to turn brown, stinky goo into magic. Plastic.

BACTERIA NOT HUMANS LOL WE COME SECOND THOUGH
earth: coughs
whole solar system: plastic virus!!!
Finally something with quality in the trends..
Yah. Most of trends are nonsense vlogs
I see no Kurzgesagt video on the trends... All I found was shows that are not educational
If only if YouTube comments were the same quality...as for you, I’ll let you off with 10 years+life in prison.
"Finally something with quality in the trends.."
Oh, that's why this video with an important topic has so many views and idiotic comments.
In reality Asian countries and third world countries are the biggest causers of plastic waste.
Hemp plastics could replace all plastic materials and is also biodegradable, easy to grow massive crops, and since hemp is high in nitrogen it enriches the soil around the crops
Kevin Lee tell me how anyone is supposed to never use plastic. It’s everywhere, you can’t do anything about unless you’re rich and have the power to do so.
@Michael Priest I didn't say it wasn't everywhere. It's in nearly everything we use and in many cases it's made life far easier and less expensive. Everyone just wants to post videos about the "hells and horrors of plastics" but in reality it's saved far more lives than will ever take. There shouldn't be "biodegradable" versions of plastics replacing everything that uses plastics in some forms. I personally wouldn't want my replacement ball joints in my body being biodegradable. I wouldn't want the high-strength molded parts that are used to ship car parts, among other things, to be biodegradable. It's really easy to not understand the much larger picture of how ubiquitous plastics are now and what they do and just make videos bitching about how awful they are for some stupid fish no one gives a shit about. If you have better ideas then go to the plastics manufacturers and offer them.
I can sit behind my keyboard in my underwear eating Cheetos and bitch about plastics all day just like 99.99% of the rest of the world but I know better. Plastics don't shatter like glass. Plastics don't let your food rot like paper. Plastics are lighter and nearly as strong structurally as aluminum and steel and costs a tiny fraction of the price. Can you imagine life today without plastics? Your computer, monitor, printer, cellphone, most of your car, roadways, tires, electric cabling, etc., would either still be manufactured using 1910's technology or would cease to exist.
I don't drink bottled water. I buy about a dozen bottles of water a year and fill them with tap water. Paying for bottled water is a scam. I don't drink any other products except tap water, I throw out about one bag of garbage every three weeks, I recycle all my cardboard because the city takes care of it. Most people throw everything away and have one or more bags of garbage a week. I also rarely eat out which makes insane amounts of trash. I'm not hitting people over the head with it, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of shit content from shit YouTube sites. If the world consolidated all of its trash in one spot on the Earth for the past few hundred years it would barely cover the entire State of Rhode Island. But nothing stops people from sounding alarm bells over something that's not truly an emergency.
Kevin Lee I think that you have a good point. But there are plenty of items out there that don’t need to be plastic but they are. I never eat out at fast food restaurants and honestly believe they shouldn’t exist. But we should be concerned about marine life consuming these items and dying because they are just as important as we are. I would rather us be living in a time where none of this exists as well as vehicles because the world should be taken care of instead of us abusing it.
Kevin Lee I could very easily live without the things we have today that make life “convenient”. Everyone just wants more and is never content with what they have which is pretty selfish. Especially when their selfishness is causing the world harm.
Kevin Lee You realize regular plastics are all made from natural materials as well, right?
Bioplastics isn't a contradiction, it's a subgroup.
"What should we use to make this disposable item that'll only be used once?"
"How about this nearly indestructible material that never deteriorates and is very hard to dispose of?"
"...Why the hell would we do that?"
"It's cheap"
"Okay then!"

7:15 The West ”recycle” by selling it's plastic garbage to Asia, which is the cause of the huge amount of plastic waste in the region. I know this video was before China banned western plastic garbage and the whole scandal was exposed, but this statement makes me question Kurzgesagt’s due diligence if not it's objectivity in all of its videos.
Westerners are hypocrites!
Just because they also had the plastic from the West doesn't mean that they didn't create any of it themselves. Even with all the plastic now staying in the West china still has one of the highest plastic outputs in the world.
ITryToLookLikeYou True. But that's because of the country's humongous population. I was criticizing that sanctimonious, we’ve-figutred-it-all-out tone while their own green policy is based on a lie.
Thank you. I was thinking of the same issue
@PianoPlayer correction, humans are hypocrites. its not like the west are the only region that pollutes. You probably aren't any better. You're using the internet, data servers are among some of the most "polluting" factors in society, due to the massive power needed and materials. So you are indeed yourself a hypocrite.
After I watched this, I looked around my room and went "holy sh-"
3:53 the most depressing part
We need plastic that decomposes safely...
Seattle just passed the first ban on straws in the U.S., which is important because straws are particularly difficult to recycle due to their size. And also important because Starbucks is based in Seattle and has already innovated a lid that does not require a straw for iced drinks.
@Fluxquark Not really, if anything it discourages, straws are cheap, now that product costs a bit more. Enviromental effect is miniscule and even if it was bigger, you'd only see effects occuring decades later. Worst case it might create pushback and cause people to care about engaging with enviromental protectionsim even less than before.
FutureNow
The public; why not make metal washable straws?
Government; it’s too expensive and long.
Me; can’t people learn to be patient.
My Idea; taking micro molecules from the atmosphere and forming them into a shape.
Like if you agree and comment idea one or two
FutureNow I always reuse straws that I get in restaurants etc. So, is that good?
I just solved the problem by not spending $9 on coffee like an idiot.
Essentially a meaningless gesture as a plastic straw in the US is likely to end up in a landfill that would eventually be recycled via natural processes.
They explained that the alternative cloth bag is often worse for the environment.
The plastic problem is almost entirely a developing world problem... so being more careful about plastic use in the developed world is like cleaning up your room more in an apartment because your roommate has made a lot of mess in his room which is causing the apartment to stink.
2:56 who the hell came up with that brilliant idea?
It's just that Humans don't care..
And that's means me too..
we watched this at school, some only knew and recognize that this was made by you guys

Well first off, all of you are wrong. The ocean was not made to hold plastic. We have polluted, over fished, and killed sea creatures in fear. We dump thousand of pounds of garbage and chemicals into the water that allows us to live. And why? Because we are selfish human beings who don’t realize we are fucking our selves over and killing of what feeds so many people on this world. Many say that we will go to Mars and establish colonies. While this is very well possible we need to take care of our planet.
Think of earth as a car, it needs the right fuel to keep going. A lot of us honestly don’t give a shit. Our politicians are lying to us and saying that it is fake or this isn’t real along with global warming. And yes, not all of them do this. And yes, SOME of us care. But it is not enough. We can’t live on this planet if we treat it like shit. I want to raise my children on a planet where I can show them beautiful forests, huge, clear oceans and lakes, and great rolling mountains. I don’t want to have to show them burnt and chopped down trees, dirty and disgusting water, and ruble of a destroyed mountain.
I hope that you can make a difference. Make a change. Look to your self and say “hey, today I’m not going to throw out that plastic. I think I am going to recycle it. Maybe today I will plant trees.” I hope that we stop pumping carbon into the air, stop burning our forests, and stop polluting our waters. I hope you MAKE A STAND. This is our home, no matter your race, sex, skin color, nationality, or sexual orientation.
Sincerely,
Danny Pugito
