Plastic Pollution: How Humans are Turning the World into Plastic

Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell - 2018-07-01

Modern life would be impossible without plastic – but we have long since lost control over our invention. Why has plastic turned into a problem and what do we know about its dangers?

This video is a collaboration with UN Environment and their Clean Seas campaign, If you want to take action to turn the tide on plastics, go to http://www.cleanseas.org and make your pledge.

We also partnered with askscience on reddit – on https://bit.ly/2tVU68d you can talk to experts and ask questions about about plastic pollution today!

Egors Deimos - 2020-01-31

Well first off, all of you are wrong. The ocean was not made to hold plastic. We have polluted, over fished, and killed sea creatures in fear. We dump thousand of pounds of garbage and chemicals into the water that allows us to live. And why? Because we are selfish human beings who don’t realize we are fucking our selves over and killing of what feeds so many people on this world. Many say that we will go to Mars and establish colonies. While this is very well possible we need to take care of our planet.

Think of earth as a car, it needs the right fuel to keep going. A lot of us honestly don’t give a shit. Our politicians are lying to us and saying that it is fake or this isn’t real along with global warming. And yes, not all of them do this. And yes, SOME of us care. But it is not enough. We can’t live on this planet if we treat it like shit. I want to raise my children on a planet where I can show them beautiful forests, huge, clear oceans and lakes, and great rolling mountains. I don’t want to have to show them burnt and chopped down trees, dirty and disgusting water, and ruble of a destroyed mountain.

I hope that you can make a difference. Make a change. Look to your self and say “hey, today I’m not going to throw out that plastic. I think I am going to recycle it. Maybe today I will plant trees.” I hope that we stop pumping carbon into the air, stop burning our forests, and stop polluting our waters. I hope you MAKE A STAND. This is our home, no matter your race, sex, skin color, nationality, or sexual orientation.

Sincerely,
Danny Pugito

Then, when he did, the gold was washed away from his hands, then everything he had touched, that did turn to gold, turned back to normal. Magicsword89 - 2020-01-29

Funny enough, there are some countries and the us are looking at ways of making natural gas power plants next to land fills to help compat the dependence on coal and oil for our electricity needs. As it still produces CO2 but only CO2. Compare to the oil and coal that produce more CO2 and other harmful substances that get released into our atmosphere.

I remember finding plastic bags from 10 or so years ago, they were really flakey and could definitely not hold items, I think the plastic bags take forever to degrade but once they get to the flakey stage they're unusable. But yeah, using them before that stage is wise, and I wish more people practiced that tbh

Canadian Guy 16 - 2019-08-03

Hemp plastics could replace all plastic materials and is also biodegradable, easy to grow massive crops, and since hemp is high in nitrogen it enriches the soil around the crops

Michael Priest - 2019-09-21

Kevin Lee tell me how anyone is supposed to never use plastic. It’s everywhere, you can’t do anything about unless you’re rich and have the power to do so.

Kevin Lee - 2019-09-21

@Michael Priest I didn't say it wasn't everywhere. It's in nearly everything we use and in many cases it's made life far easier and less expensive. Everyone just wants to post videos about the "hells and horrors of plastics" but in reality it's saved far more lives than will ever take. There shouldn't be "biodegradable" versions of plastics replacing everything that uses plastics in some forms. I personally wouldn't want my replacement ball joints in my body being biodegradable. I wouldn't want the high-strength molded parts that are used to ship car parts, among other things, to be biodegradable. It's really easy to not understand the much larger picture of how ubiquitous plastics are now and what they do and just make videos bitching about how awful they are for some stupid fish no one gives a shit about. If you have better ideas then go to the plastics manufacturers and offer them.

I can sit behind my keyboard in my underwear eating Cheetos and bitch about plastics all day just like 99.99% of the rest of the world but I know better. Plastics don't shatter like glass. Plastics don't let your food rot like paper. Plastics are lighter and nearly as strong structurally as aluminum and steel and costs a tiny fraction of the price. Can you imagine life today without plastics? Your computer, monitor, printer, cellphone, most of your car, roadways, tires, electric cabling, etc., would either still be manufactured using 1910's technology or would cease to exist.

I don't drink bottled water. I buy about a dozen bottles of water a year and fill them with tap water. Paying for bottled water is a scam. I don't drink any other products except tap water, I throw out about one bag of garbage every three weeks, I recycle all my cardboard because the city takes care of it. Most people throw everything away and have one or more bags of garbage a week. I also rarely eat out which makes insane amounts of trash. I'm not hitting people over the head with it, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of shit content from shit YouTube sites. If the world consolidated all of its trash in one spot on the Earth for the past few hundred years it would barely cover the entire State of Rhode Island. But nothing stops people from sounding alarm bells over something that's not truly an emergency.

Michael Priest - 2019-09-21

Kevin Lee I think that you have a good point. But there are plenty of items out there that don’t need to be plastic but they are. I never eat out at fast food restaurants and honestly believe they shouldn’t exist. But we should be concerned about marine life consuming these items and dying because they are just as important as we are. I would rather us be living in a time where none of this exists as well as vehicles because the world should be taken care of instead of us abusing it.

Michael Priest - 2019-09-21

Kevin Lee I could very easily live without the things we have today that make life “convenient”. Everyone just wants more and is never content with what they have which is pretty selfish. Especially when their selfishness is causing the world harm.

Paul Elderson - 2020-01-12

Kevin Lee You realize regular plastics are all made from natural materials as well, right?

Bioplastics isn't a contradiction, it's a subgroup.

Seattle just passed the first ban on straws in the U.S., which is important because straws are particularly difficult to recycle due to their size. And also important because Starbucks is based in Seattle and has already innovated a lid that does not require a straw for iced drinks.

@Fluxquark Not really, if anything it discourages, straws are cheap, now that product costs a bit more. Enviromental effect is miniscule and even if it was bigger, you'd only see effects occuring decades later. Worst case it might create pushback and cause people to care about engaging with enviromental protectionsim even less than before.

FutureNow
The public; why not make metal washable straws?
Government; it’s too expensive and long.
Me; can’t people learn to be patient.
My Idea; taking micro molecules from the atmosphere and forming them into a shape.
Like if you agree and comment idea one or two

FutureNow I always reuse straws that I get in restaurants etc. So, is that good?

I just solved the problem by not spending $9 on coffee like an idiot.

Essentially a meaningless gesture as a plastic straw in the US is likely to end up in a landfill that would eventually be recycled via natural processes.

They explained that the alternative cloth bag is often worse for the environment.

The plastic problem is almost entirely a developing world problem... so being more careful about plastic use in the developed world is like cleaning up your room more in an apartment because your roommate has made a lot of mess in his room which is causing the apartment to stink.
