How to Make White Phosphorus | Extended version

Aussie Chemist - 2019-01-21

After so many attempts, finally came to a design that has a yield of 95% and kept the reaction vessel intact, well this also illustrates how difficult is for me to make all those vids so if you feel generous please consider support me on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/aussiechemist

BioDOC - 2020-08-24

7:10 It seems to me that you misunderstood a little thing. White phosphorus in an alkaline medium forms Phosphine and not Phosgene. Phosgene is the dichloride of the carbonic acid and has nothing to do with white Phosphorus. Phosphine (which, by the way, is an outdated term, Monophosphane would be more correct) is also toxic, but it's nowhere near the toxicity of Phosgene. Among other things it's used as a pesticide.

Aussie Chemist - 2020-08-24

yeah i know, I mispronounced it, good thing someone finally point it out haha i thought id go unnoiticed

BioDOC - 2020-08-24

@Aussie Chemist 🤭🤭🤭

thanks for showing the failures, the most important part of science is showing the mistakes that were learned from

APandas_AM - 2020-05-19

Welcome to the FBI watch list!

Voltadox - 2019-01-21

Ok, this is epic

Aussie Chemist - 2019-01-21

First of all thx for this rather nice comment, and secondly would you mind to Un-dislike my vid , this doesn’t need get personal

Voltadox - 2019-01-22

I didn’t dislike it!

Aussie Chemist - 2019-01-22

That’s really odd

Curtis Dorris - 2019-01-21

Making phosphorus seems like an expensive endeavor. Lots of broken glass.

Jannik Heidemann - 2019-07-20

Not so much if you can learn from the failures of others.

ElementalMaker - 2020-04-03

Man you have some balls working with white phosphorus like this! Damn my ass puckered hard when that flask exploded. Glad you are okay. Is red phosphorus not illegal in Au? It's a controlled substance here in the US.

Aussie Chemist - 2020-04-03

ElementalMaker that’s why I decided to have them surgically removed 😂
Anyway jokes aside it is illegal here as well but you there are always ways. Great content you got there man

Glease Riviera - 2019-06-14

i love your lab ware and technique, really cool (in many of your videos included)
also curious to see further refinement on what you want to do, from your obviously inspired work

cameron Gibbs - 2019-01-21

Awesome keep up the good work

Kamran Pipekesh - 2020-12-06

Could you tell me what is the name of that u shape glass? Also that balloon looks special ;) thanks a lot

Robert Flask - 2019-06-30

Okay so do this in the middle if a lake on a steel boat 😆

Kevin Kott - 2020-12-03

Never heat ANYTHING in a closed system. You sir, made what is called a bomb!

bromiso valum - 2020-12-11

There are reactions that call for autogenous pressure, so need to heat it in a closed vessel, when the produced pressure isn't very high.

Kevin Kott - 2020-12-11

@bromiso valum Autoclaves aren't made of glass. Of course there are reactions that use higher pressures but a borosilicate rbf is not going to contain much more than a few atmg of pressure

its actuallyalex - 2020-04-02

who else gonna reenact that scene from spec ops

Samir Muradov - 2020-04-03

I'm reenacting the killstreak in me

Samir Muradov - 2020-04-03

Me

Samir Muradov - 2020-04-03

ismail erdem - 2019-01-27

Sir could you make a video about making elemental phosphorus from bones thank you.

Jannik Heidemann - 2019-07-20

Or from cola.

Teacher is a milf - 2021-01-27

To the FBI agent seeing this comment I am just watching this because I saw the spec ops the line campaign please don’t put me on the blacklist

Durr it me Exe - 2020-07-02

Me on my way to commit a war crime

BioDOC - 2020-08-16

what kind of flask (100 ml) do you use for this? I only know Kjeldahl flasks that look like this, but you named them differently, unfortunately I couldn't understand how you named it
btw, your synthesis is so far the best I've seen til now, apart from the initial failures 👍👍👍👍👍

Aussie Chemist - 2020-08-17

it is Kjeldahl flask , since it's danish the source i looked up where the K is not pronounced.

BioDOC - 2020-08-17

@Aussie Chemist I know the pronunciation coz Denmark is an neighbor of Germany
it's pronounced like this: "Kjel" like the English word "kill" and "dale" like Sunny"dale"
thx for you answer 👍

Nathan Leslie - 2020-05-25

your heating it too close and too much. dont have the flame touching the glass and regulate the heating.

John R. Timmers - 2021-01-26

I wonder if there is a titration you could run to calculate the purity of your product

Anon - 2019-01-21

What happend was that phosphorus vapors and mist built up in the distillation flask. When they broke the seal at the neck it when pyrophoric and blew up. The second explosion was from solid phosphorus

Halit Uresin - 2019-05-30

Phosphor from urine ?

Aussie Chemist - 2019-05-31

the project has been done and i have the raw footage.....just dont have time edit it yet, dont get too excited tho the yield was somewhat sad

rzen1th - 2020-02-06

useful for if you literally don’t care about existing

Darell Roasa - 2019-01-22

hey mate! aside from scraping matchbox or pressure cooking WP to get RP. Do you know any doable method to obtain RP or WP, something like electrolysis🤪. Im still an idiot in chemistry but Im improving. I’m going to attempt hexametaphosphate to get WP underground . may I get some advice?

Aussie Chemist - 2019-01-22

Darell Roasa this question sounds super fishy 😂

Darell Roasa - 2019-01-22

Aussie Chemist yeah kinda, but let the old dog play like a kido hehehe. Hey i can brag about chlorinedioxide exploding 1’1/2” from my face, hehehe. goodthing my eyes were spared and only end up with menstruated face. why is it fishy its not amine.

Andrew Villalobos - 2020-04-05

@Ben Warner What are the 2 methods? Asking for a friend of course 😂. I don't cook meth but I am sick and tired of sanding off red phosphorous from match boxes for my Armstrongs mix.

bromiso valum - 2020-12-11

reduction of phosphate with carbon at 1200 degrees in an earthenware vessel with a long spout immersed in water. They already did it in the 17th century, but it is also very likely to maim or kill you.

Hello FBI

Nathaniel Hamer - 2019-09-30

I'm surprised that this channel is not demonitized yet

Norman Reppingen - 2020-09-01

Very well done - quite risky, but well, probably not as risky as riding motorcycles.

5 0 9 - 2020-03-07

time to war crime

BioDOC - 2020-08-16

@Kyles Mom what is this nonsense with war crime, do you think he's using the white phosphorus in a war, btw, white phosphorus is not under War Weapons Act
nobody is interested in the fact that gigantic quantities of potassium nitrate are still being sold to private individuals in the USA

Shazu ZrQt - 2020-08-21

@BioDOC incendiary weapons are...
And the withe phosphorus is definitely one of the most dangerous one

Henry RenYz - 2019-06-21

The red phosphorus converting is suck a dangerous that until now i still fear trying a new way to make white phosporus, yet I'm still using a test tube filled with red phosphorus and iron powder to produce the white allotrope. Also the hot polyphosphoric acid that generated from phosphorus and water damage the glassware makes me worry about the experimental safety.

As my experience on making white phosphorus, control the temperature below 600 Celsius is necessary if you want a whiter product.

I recommended to put you videos on bilibili, that more people can see them without using a "ladder", just like Nurdrage.

sarah bateman - 2021-01-13

misnamed video

GunBucky Bucketman - 2019-03-21

If you heat the white phosphorus while they are in the water, will they turned back to red?

Aussie Chemist - 2019-03-21

GunBucky Bucketman No

GunBucky Bucketman - 2019-03-21

@Aussie Chemist In the wiki they said it's has to be heat up to 280 C, Can I just heat it in the water? Or I need some kind of specific tools to do it??

Aussie Chemist - 2019-03-21

GunBucky Bucketman the boiling point of water 100C

GunBucky Bucketman - 2019-03-21

@Aussie Chemist That's bad.

Smoke Root - 2019-08-22

You can turn it back to red p using UV light

Anon - 2019-01-21

Smaller scales in a test tube work well. I have gotten a gram or say that way. Also try using a metal tube sealed at one end and purged with propane or nitrogen

Andrew Villalobos - 2020-04-05

Ooh I wouldn't use propane with that. Any inert gas is fine but if you manage to get a leak somewhere you will not only have burning phosphorous but the burning phosphorous will likely get the propane to go boom. So you'll have a disaster on steroids.

Deep Forrest Alchemy - 2019-01-21

I truly appreciate your candour as I believe that people learn more from our mistakes than our successes.
I am happy you were not hurt and to me it’s a good reminder of the value of PPE.
I look forward to your videos and am considering supporting you on patreon when circumstances permit
(I am filling the festive season “hole” at present...)
keep up the great work mate.

Banjo Bear - 2019-11-26

I'm not a great chemist but a lot of these mistakes are pretty evident by looking at the setup before you even fire it up

Aussie Chemist - 2019-11-26

Banjo Bear oh would you mind point it out for me

Rodney Reviews Things - 2019-01-21

Is this how you make meth?

Aussie Chemist - 2019-01-21

Rodney Reviews Things I’d suggest you to go down to your local supermarket and wait at the matchbox session and ask whoever buys enormous amount
And base on the question you asked I doubt it will you take long to find such a guy
