Graphene Aerogel Synthesis Supplemental

Kingswell Labs - 2019-05-10

This is just a quick update to make a correction and to add a few notes to help out when replicating this process. I apologize for my voice, allergies :-(

Correction: Use quartz glass when doing the last step in the kiln or microwave. Borosilicate glass will not work.

Notes: Do not let GO solution go above 25C when ultrasonicating. I have been having problems with the structure when freeze drying and I think that is the reason why.

I hope this helps!

@Scott_C - 2019-05-31

Great stuff. Thanks for doing the work for this series. I"d love to see the last part where you apply a current to it and compare it to other common conductive materials.

Maybe send some to AVE, Nile Red, The Thought Emporium, Applied Science or some other larger electronics/chemistry YT Content providers if you want to do a little marketing of your channel. Your videos are really good and it's a bummer that cost is a problem for you.

@KingswellLabs - 2019-05-31

Thanks! That's a really good idea, I will contact them and see if anyone is interested.

Things aren't as dire as I originally thought, I am still working on other techniques and will post videos soon.

Hello, I am a current high school student and i want to help you further continue you experiments because this is the technology of the future. How can i get prepared myself as of now to help you in the future?

@KingswellLabs - 2019-06-20

I apologize for the slow response... I think it's amazing that you would take on this task at your age!

You have a really good question. Besides education either from an instition or by reading the latest research/experiments, I think the best way to prepare is to start experimenting yourself while focusing on green methods. I know I didn't really answer your question, but send me an email and I can hopefully be more detailed.

I may have been overly dramatic in my last video, I still am able to do experiments and will be uploading videos soon.

I've seen a lot of mention of graphene aerogel being mechanically robust, but no particular numbers on relevant metrics. Part of me wants to complain, but I also understand that different methods and conditions may and likely will produce different results. Do you know of any attempts to make larger volumes of graphene aerogel, and how hard is it to shape once the process of its creation is complete?

@KingswellLabs - 2020-01-12

I totally understand, producing consistent results have been very difficult for me. All the papers I have seen use different methods so it's hard to tell what's what. Creating the shape is the easy part, I have made a 2 inch diameter and 1/2 thick disc... It could definitely be made larger or in any shape.

The problem with the robustness is removing the water from the hydrogel. I think the freeze drying process is weakening the structure because freezing the water makes it expand in the hydrogel. I want to find a better method by either using ethanol to replace the water or using liquid nitrogen.

@jeffmorin5867 - 2022-12-04

@@KingswellLabs From what I've gathered, the faster you can freeze dry, the better the result. So I'm curious how the liquid nitrogen worked out.

@anupravamandal1870 - 2023-03-15

Is there any other drying procedure without freeze drying to get light weight rGO? Actually, I have dried 3D block rGO in oven at 60°C but it transforms to very little quantity stone like powder. Please tell me how to get light weight rGO powder after this hydrothermal synthesis without freeze drying?

@Chewychaca - 2019-05-11

:0 a happy surprise!

@m.t-thoughts8919 - 2019-12-20

I heard it has a great surface, right? So why not using it for cooling? Making a thermal pat out of it for example for better cooling since it has a gigantic surface.🤔

@KingswellLabs - 2020-01-10

Sounds totally feasible, it's just not something I have looked into yet.

@m.t-thoughts8919 - 2020-01-10

@@KingswellLabs I saw also a paper, were the, introduced Lithium Ions (through Sputtering, I think) wich gave the graphene areogel the ability to store better and much more Hydrogen. (You should check if it's increasing the current) 😁

In which application we use this type of material???

Hello sir
Instead of EDA we can use another?
If yes then which one use

@ashwinipatil8449 - 2021-01-14

The glass container for hydrogel u used are of any special type of containers or just ordinary

@KingswellLabs - 2021-01-14

Any container that you can seal and withstand 80C for the length of time will work. I am using essential oil containers because they had the size and shape I was looking for.

@jimmyku8806 - 2019-06-05

How long did you take using ultrasonic the graphene oxide solution?
Than ,should let the graphene solution to the room temperature when you add the EDA?

@KingswellLabs - 2019-06-05

If you already have graphene oxide, you don't need to ultrasonicate. You only need to ultrasonicate if you have graphite oxide. Otherwise, yes the solution should be a room temperature before adding EDA. I hope this helps.

@jimmyku8806 - 2019-06-06

Kingswell Labs
How much time it takes to let graphene oxide solution homogeneous under ice bath?
Thank you

@KingswellLabs - 2019-06-08

@@jimmyku8806 If you have graphene oxide you do not need ice bath nor ultrasonic homogonizer. You only need to still solution for at least 10 minutes. Only need ice bath if ultrasonicating Graphite Oxide.

@daviperes - 2019-05-10

Do you have any use for this?

@KingswellLabs - 2019-05-10

Yes, the final aerogel can be used as a battery/capacitor electrode. It is also compressible and and mechanically robust, so it could have many other uses.
