GREAT VIDEO. ...........EXCELENT EXPERIMENT..........You should do a 1_4 micheals addition. That is why i want to make an alpha beta unsaturated ketone. Want to alpha brominate...methyl ethyl ketone. Which i think i know how. And then Use NaOH and hear to get rid of the bromine and form the double bond. Not exactly sure how to do that but i got some ideas.
do alkenes react with nitric acid or related species? you could make dl phenyl alanine perhaps?

if i have time i will do the synthesis this weekend... but it will take some time until the video will be uploaded. In the first part of the cinnamic acid synthesis the ethyl ester is synthesized you can get it by fractional distillation of the reaction mixture it boils at 271°C
