How to properly copper plate steel

Pyrotechnical Science - 2020-04-09

In today’s video I show how to copper plate steel, by first nickel plating the steel.

Very good video! Thank you for the post. Time to get to plating!

Daxton Brown - 2021-02-01

Just tried to directly copper plate a steel bar. Wish I'd watched this video first. What a mess. Everything in this video is true. Gonna do nickel next, which is what I wanted anyway.

Zippo Fanatic 77 - 2020-12-25

Bro I love the channel. Keep up the good work. Video how to copper plate solid brass next??

Braveskin - 2020-08-26

Hi, cool video. Can you please share the reference from where you learned that copper salts are "known carcinogens"? Thanks!

Braveskin - 2020-08-26

Doh, I missed the correction you put on the subtitle. Sorry about that!

Pyrotechnical Science - 2020-08-26

It happens, no worries!

Ali Jasim - 2020-10-11

Nice work bro 👍

Part two I missed you

Pyrotechnical Science - 2020-04-09

Pedro Trujillo miss u too😢

Shanan Philip - 2020-11-01

I copper plated steel very well last week using a baking soda solution

Dieter Krause - 2020-11-17

Yep! Its no prob to coat steel with copper in bs-solution

Pyrotechnical Science - 2020-11-17

You can copper plate steel using alkaline solutions, but for a long lasting and corrosion resistant plate I don’t recommend it. To get the best plating results is to use copper pyrophosphate as a preliminary coating or to use a nickel coating. These will be you best bet if your looking for a functional plate as an amateur.

Nice 🖖👍
Instead of sulfuric acid it is possible to use Ammonium(zinc chloride) Chloride? 🤔

Pyrotechnical Science - 2021-02-13

You mean zinc chloride and ammonium chloride? Or ammonium zinc chloride?

WaschyNumber1 - 2021-02-13

@Pyrotechnical Science hi, yes
Ammonium Chloride and Zinc Chloride, can one of they be used as a replacement for sulfuric acid (battery acid)?

Pyrotechnical Science - 2021-02-13

As far as I know, no. You don’t have to add sulfuric acid, it just helps with conductivity and the smoothness of the plate.

WaschyNumber1 - 2021-02-14

@Pyrotechnical Science ok, thank you ☺️

oddsve87 - 2021-03-23

I was able to electroplate iron directly with a copper surface using an NaHCO3 (Sodium bicarbonate) as an electrolyte, with good result and without any intermediate steps.

Pyrotechnical Science - 2021-03-23

Yes you can copper plate steel with simple alkaline solutions, but simply the plate won’t hold very well, this is why almost all industrial copper plating uses a nickel starting coating.

Switch your leads around. For example the first nickel plating you did.
Use one alligator clip to attach the nickel electrode to the positive terminal of the battery (anode) and the other to attach the steel to the negative terminal (now called the cathode).
Also
If you mixed 5 parts water 1 part muriatic acid and used solid piece of copper it'll plate directly to the steel. Remember the positive goes to the copper and negative to the steel. Since you don't have The correct solution it'll take a few minutes but it'll create it's own via the copper anode. Make sure nothing other than the copper anode is in the solution.

Pyrotechnical Science - 2020-07-08

Why would I switch the electrodes around? then it would reverse the plating process.

Mark Robertson - 2020-07-09

@Pyrotechnical Science Idk if you made the mistake of saying it backwards but you said to put the positive on your part and the negative on the Nickel and that's backwards. It goes like I said in my first comment. Your positive always goes to your Anode.

Anode is defined as.
the positively charged electrode by which the electrons leave a device.

Cathode.
the negatively charged electrode by which electrons enter an electrical device.

Your Anode is your piece of nickel and cathode is your steel.
Your contaminating your solution and not getting a proper plate. Trust me look it up.

I'm in no way trying to be critical of what your doing. I like watching and learning and since I do plating as well, I thought I'd put my two sense in. I'd hope someone would correct me if I didn't do something right. If I am wrong then please correct me leaving a source as proof.
I'm only trying to point it out. You may have connected it correctly but didn't say it correctly like you caught yourself doing when you corrected what solution you were using...
Keep experimenting and learning my friend.

Pyrotechnical Science - 2020-07-10

I appreciate the advice, but I see where you misunderstood. I use the term positive in reference to where the electrons are leaving, kinda like how a car battery’s positive side is not truly positive but where the electrons flow from.

@Nelson Brett Two sense?
Two cents.

The question is, what are you talking about?
