Preparation of Chloroform

UC235 - 2011-11-29

The haloform reaction is used to prepare chloroform in a simple procedure. The resulting crude product is dried, distilled, and stabilized, giving an overall 66.5% yield from hypochlorite. A later batch using 4 of these bottles with proper chilling to -5C gave an average of 73.0% yield (bottles were also cooled faster following the reaction by placing outside in near-freezing rain). A discussion of the reaction mechanism follows. The intro music clip is from "Stealing Fat" by The Dust Brothers. I believe this falls under fair use.

Renato - 2014-05-24

What did he add to the solution in 11:35 of the video?

Joe Anderson - Wales, UK - 2014-07-03

He added ethanol, to destroy any toxic phosgene formed from the decomposition of the chloroform.

UC235 - 2011-12-01

@zhmapper I built up over time. It was very frustrating at first when I had shiny new 1-neck RB flasks, but no other nice glassware. A condenser followed shortly, and then a slew of adapters to make a simple distillation setup. I quickly came to preps where I needed some piece of glass that I didn't have and couldn't improvise. Cue soxhlet extractors, fractionating columns, dean stark traps, fritted bubblers, multi-neck flasks, lots and lots of stoppers, an addition funnel, etc.

Zanragnar - 2011-12-02

Your videos are some of the best synthesis videos I've seen so far. I like how you get into detail with the mechanisms, and mention the chemical's uses.

UC235 - 2012-02-16

@gunny0488 I've been waiting for a stupid comment for a while. So far, I've used it to recrystallize 5-carboxypentyltriphenylphosphonium bromide and for azeotropic drying during a fischer esterification. Did you know that gasoline is used for getting high if you're poor and vengefully burning other people's vehicles/houses/etc? The point is that almost everything has negative and positive uses and chloroform's ability to knock people out is rather exaggerated.

tuami melapelas - 2014-11-23

You are my new hero.

I will watch all of your videos hopefully I can learn something.

I have never thought of applying this type of formula to some one.

But in all seriousness what would actually happen if you collapse some one with this formula.
What kind of physical damage, brain damage, lung damage kind this cause.

There is a page on how to do this formula rolling through the internet I red it and got curious.

However the page doesn't talk about the oxidation preservation and possible side effects of breathing this thing.

I love chemistry but I have no idea how to apply it.

There is also a formula on how to make thermite.

TMoD7007 - 2015-05-01

Great video! I wished my chemistry teacher would have been such a good explainer as you are.

I wanted to do that until I heard "Phosgene"... No, thanks! I leave that to the professionals, although I'd love to do some stuff with chloroform!

David Whalley - 2014-07-15

Really good chemistry!! :D

UC235 - 2012-12-30

Yeah...I'll pass. Youtube user Myfanwy94 actually died from pulmonary edema after accidentally exposing himself to phosgene in a poorly designed experiment.

UC235 - 2013-01-24

You mean the erlenmeyer flask at 6:53? That's anhydrous calcium chloride, a dessicant (to remove any traces of dissolved water).

Pașca Alexandru - 2014-04-12

Thanks for sharing!
I really liked how you explained the reaction.

UC235 - 2012-12-30

I think it comes to ~$30/L this way. DCM is vastly cheaper where it can substitute.

UC235 - 2011-12-01

@zhmapper I am a discriminating ebay shopper. I have also had good experiences with united glass tech, though they are a bit more expensive. How is the yield with the ice-chilled mix and slow addition? I'd expect it to be a bit better, but it's a lot of effort unless the yield improves dramatically. Even then, the bleach is pretty cheap (though you'd need $30USD to make a liter of chloroform this way) and the effort required is nearly zero.

UC235 - 2011-12-01

@staratsx That would depend very much so on storage conditions. Keeping it cold and in the dark (which is why amber glass is preferred) should slow down degradation. Additionally, oxygen is needed for the conversion to phosgene. If the bottle is brand new from the supplier and sealed, it may very well be fine, even after a dozen years or so. If the bottle is opened frequently for use, the shelf life will be much shorter.

Mastersorcier - 2011-11-29

Thank you very much for your very interesting chemistry videos. They are very, very, very, good.

nachocheese44 - 2012-06-30

Damn, I like you. I just found your videos when triphenylmethanol came out, I can't stop watching them. Do you use any sort of ventilation apparatus, like a portable fume hood?

UC235 - 2013-01-04

Oh, I am quite aware, but you can prepare things like 2,2,2-trichloro-1-phenylethanol from benzaldehyde and chloroform in alkaline conditions. Chlorobutanol is also prepared similarly using acetone. I may have mentioned these in the video...these are products of trapping CCl3- with a carbonyl. Dichlorocarbene is of course useful in other reactions.

EricSteel414 - 2013-12-11

You must be from the Midwest. Great value. Lol

Charles Coslor - 2013-12-11

KainMcnab - 2013-12-05

I was just curious, what is the temperature of your lab room? I assume room temperature (21 degrees Celsius)?

UC235 - 2012-02-21

@surplusdriller No, on the grounds that chloral is a US list IV controlled substance and making it (for any purpose) would be a criminal offense with the video being all the needed evidence to convict. On the other hand, I have found a way to sidestep the need for chloral. p-chlorobenzaldehyde can react with chloroform in alkaline conditions to give 4-chloro-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl)benzene, the intermediate in the DDT synthesis. This with H2SO4 and chlorobenzene would give DDT.

zhmapper - 2011-12-01

Haha, and there I was, cooling the mix with ice and wasting over an hour adding acetone. Great work! After a couple semesters of class, I really need to update my chloroform video... lots of goofs in that one :/ I love your videos. Do you mail order your glass?

Cole - 2013-02-10

Get some of this, put it on a rag, then walk up to a girl and say "Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?" then proceed to cover her face in it. Best pickup line ever

cptorangutang2 - 2011-11-29

As an aspiring chemist, I find your videos VERY helpful. Thank you so much for all the effort you put in to the videos, it really does show when someone is passionate about their craft. It might sound a little corny, but I actually think it's rather inspiring. :)

Do you teach?

Cool Story Bro - 2014-06-29

That flag though...

UC235 - 2013-01-10

I can think of some advanced things that I would like to use phosgene for (isocyanates (also interesting is the conversion of isocyanates to carbodiimides with a catalyst) and chloroformates), but I would be making it through thermolysis of more easily handled triphosgene, a solid, with the generator connected to my reaction vessel, with a scrubber, and outdoors. I have used some dangerous stuff indoors, but phosgene is not one I'd risk.
