FYI Destin filmed the call for my video on zero notice less than 12 hours before he flew to Alaska. He’s a class act. Thanks Destin!
@Diego Fernandez Can you give the link of the video or name pls?
@Quickest Turtle sorry. Don't remember.
@Diego Fernandez ok np
@Hypox FYI - Do not confuse American pride and patriotism with nationalism.
Perhaps you need to read a few history books.
@GOAski Did I say nationalism? No. I said patriotism/nationalism. And FYI, there is a lot of nationalists in USA. I don't understand why you had to add the passively aggressive bit at the end instead of an attempt at explanation and mutual understanding.
when Destin gets wherever he goes and speaks THEIR language and they are surprised. That never gets old. Great vid bro.
@S. Barnes I got that. I just tried a joke but it went South pole coz it was so dry.
@Abdirazak Ali oh,,your good.
@Abdirazak Ali My goodness. You're too clever to be kept alive.
@Arthur Morgan Hahahah Thanks 😊
He should write for Star Trek, whenever they decide to go more science based
Him: I’m about to experience-30 for the first time
Me: laughs in Canadian
@Tales From Last Night My record is (including windchill) -59 C. -34 is when spring was on its way. Fun to watch people encounter it. I love Destin's reaction!
Ah yes the -47 canadian winters
*Quietly joins in Illinoisian
Where I live in Switzerland, the temperatures this winter only got to about -28c. Still rather cold. But we had winters where it got colder then -40.
Our winters sucked lately. Next to no snow, relatively warm temperatures, rain, instead of snow etc. This winter was nice, because we had quite a good amount of snow and cold temps.
kk im from the northeast (usa) and after 0 below f it gets chilly and after -15f its to dam cold lol
15:23 In other words :
The submarine knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The navigation subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the submarine from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the submarine is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the acoustic navigation and communication system. However, the submarine must also know where it was.
The submarine navigation computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the submarine has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.
bru this is legit the definition for AAM (air to air missiles)
Makes sense thank you
Yeesssss!
In a nutshell: Where it was, where it wasn’t, where it is, where it isn’t
Classic meme.

This was a legitimate educational video.
"the ice is beautiful, the way it breaks up reminds me of my past relationships"
@David Linn obviously he didn’t say what I quoted 😂
@Ollie9T7 yeah. i just saw 94 people had liked your comment and i was like "i hope they don't think that's the real quote!" ok. cool cool.
@David Linn thank you for taking time out of your day to clear this up
@Ollie9T7 aye aye mate ;)
So civil.
What I love about Destin's conversations, is you really see how people's confidence and demeanour change the moment they're able to talk about what they're passionate about.
So I'm the outcast at my school so no one talks to me but when they do i just blast my thoughts at them with the power of a hurricane
@Lowerer_Of_Expectations LOL. Sounds like you're doing fine.
Tip: 2 ears, one mouth -- listen twice as much as talk.
Good luck.
Agreed! the human interaction in these videos is infectious, I was smiling the whole way through!
Hey man, I listen to your songs on a daily basis, glad to find one of my favorite youtubers here.
I know!
At the start they never know what the tone of the filming is going to be, but before long there will be a moment when they think "Oh cool, this guy just geeks out on all this stuff that I also really like"
... Like all the viewers!
Just started re-watching this series and at the beginning Destin is talking about the changes that happened while he was on board. Here's something else that has changed since this video aired. 1:36 The USS Bonhomme Richard suffered a massive fire while in port and is being scrapped. This may be some of the last footage of her at sea!
incredible Submarines In The World
@Frank Lincoln ok
And that wierd halo around the sun is called a sundog. It happens when it gets really cold out and yes its the ice crystals in the air.
They happen in the summer time too btw... It's ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Usually at or around sunset.
@dan b how do the ice crystals get up there and why don't they fall?
@Davena Risotto there called clouds and they are science!
What is sundog?
Wait..
@Drake Daraitis woof! :P
You know Andy's a pro because it takes several minutes of walking around outside and chatting before he puts a hat on... and he's still not wearing gloves.
16:16 That moment your heart sinks when Destin doesn't get bro fisted.
Risky business for a PhD scholar, haha XD
That hit hard
Almost as sad as being a footnote in Appendix C
Getting fisted by a bro might not be everyone's cup of tea, especially considering the cold there.
I’d probably reword that 😂
I used to serve with the chief of the boat on my last submarine, a true legend! I cant wait to watch the next video
Every academic laughs at "you're just here to get your name on the paper." 🤣🤣
Yes,but what specific capabilities
admiral: tactical question avoidance
"so most of you are scientists?"
that one guy went:
"heee :)"
@PewDiePies Dingleberries when it's classified how do you know ?
@PewDiePies Dingleberries please hire me too ;( i want an exicting live too
@PewDiePies Dingleberries you know a guy is lying when he spells enough like that lol.
@Camtis XR tru, shoulda been "anuff"
@Camtis XR and when you spell life "LIVE"
This proves again how Youtube is more interesting that standard TV.
Exactly what I think! Don’t need no stinkin’ TV! We have YouTube now! Regular folks are way more entertaining and way more interesting!
@Dave7heRave Same, I'm surprised cable still exists 😅
You must not watch much you tube
e fred too bad OAN or Fox News didn’t have a propaganda machine for you. Like Hannity tv hahah
ExACTly
I am an exNavy Nuke. I did my time on FBM submarines and still enjoy seeing this stuff. Keep it up!
Destin! This is the most amazing, captivating, and educational series I've ever seen on YouTube. Love it!!!
"tactical beard" xD love it!
Great video Destin. With great people doing a great job.
Hands down one of the most addictive channels to watch. Destin, you are an amazing human being.
I love how it's like all the branches of the armed forces are trying to 1-up each other for Destin. A year from now, we're gonna see "How I boarded a US SPACEFORCE LEO SPACE STATION"
@Shinkajo That is not true. For example, Destin is from the deep south. Do you think he's a racist? The killing of George Floyd happend in one of the most northern states.
@Rick Those are some pretty lame excuses. Cba to even argue them
@e fred.....
What are you talking about?
John Peterson howd you know
@Dicky Stipper this comment aged well
This is by far the coolest video I've seen on YouTube yet, & I've got a feeling that wouldn't last long.
17:16 "This is not Texas!"
February 2021: "You sure about that?"
lol
You had one inch get over it
@Alex R actually it was more like 4 inches
@Dylan Lauro I had 11" in canyon lake, tx
Dustin: Boarding a submarine in the Arctic through a path much more difficult than normal after nearly falling ... Hi, What's your name!
Darn flexible ladders; they weren't joking when they said to take a good grip!
13:00 That was the most Canadian accent. Im Canadian and I wish I had an accent like that.
Amazing how Destin can make friends with everyone in any part of the earth
Absolutely agree! He even went back for the first bump, what a guy!
Yeah, pretty cool, but I think 8.26 million subscribers helps lol
It is a gift, the way I see it.
I’m freakin jealous
he needs that content
Love it when the scientists and stuff clearly get so relieved when they're trying to explain something in a super simple way and Destin realizes what they're talking about and offers the name.
My all time fave? 16:00 "It's just Calculus right? That's what PhD students are for ... you're here to get your name on the paper!" That is, as good as it gets! Thank you Destin!
It's strange how the "finger rafting" looks like it's in precise geometric shapes. Like it was man made.
Destin, this is amazing! We are using these videos as part of our science in school, and my daughter cannot get enough. Thank you so much for your dedication and commitment to making the best content you can and sharing it with the rest of us!
That whole trip felt like a classic RPG, like he just walks around meeting people who give him quests and so on
almost as though rpgs are based on real life
@Alec Checkerfield based on what? Oo
Minimal small talk, maximum information sharing
"So you're Andy? Hio said to find you?"
One of our players in rise of Tiamat got 100 exp from the dm for the experience of temporary insanity
The circle you saw around the sun, is known as a sundog. And my brother, a Sailor, has seen it during hot days out at sea as well. It must have to do with the suns reflection off a vast shiny plain, like an ocean, or ice glacier, but not a desert.
I've been watching a lot of these submarine videos and love them. My biggest question so far is how did they just suddenly pop the sail and rudder up through the ice like that?
I love how everyone along this whole journey was just super cool. And subs have a special place in my heart for some strange reason. I boarded the USS Blueback years ago when it first came to OMSI in Portland, OR. Man what a cool experience! I came away from that experience saying "I must have a sub now!" I can only imagine what you were feeling after that one! People, if you ever get to go on a sub, do it!
"This is not Texas." - Michael Cox... that statement hasn't aged well.
Lmao
It is kinda funny how everyone tries to explain his stuff like Destin wouldnt understand but when he sums it up they all have the same "oh he knows his stuff" reaction.
When you sound like you're from 'bama but everyone forgets Huntsville is literal Rocket City
goawaygoogle arent you talking about mark rober?i thinkyou got it mixed there
@Yeasty George Classy.
@Julie Enslow Why do you have to bring the fact you were the "first woman trained in architecture to be working in an all male architecture", Are you trying to bring sexism into what otherwise would of been a perfect point.
I don't think its that, it's just that they are well trained by speaking to normal people every day, who generally take it badly when people start talking a bunch of technical lingo and trying to sound smart. That and being on camera, they are assuming that the audience won't want to hear the jargon, so they are just making it as simple and basic as they can. But then Dustin gives them a clue that it's not a just a normal interview, so they suddenly feel like "oh, he wanted me to be DETAILED, not to give the simple answer?"
However, it's good that they do, since in most cases if they just started talking about stress and interferometry and stuff like that, most of the audience wouldn't be able to follow what they are talking about. I think when Dustin does that (if it's not a little bit of benign showing off), he's just letting the people in the audience know what the scientic terms are for what they just heard. It's like you can tell a person all about how somethijng works mechanically and explain it in simple concepts, and then tell them "and that's stress mechanics", they'll think "oh, so that's what stress mechanics are! I get it!", whereas if you just started in with reciting your doctoral thesis, most people would just kind of shut down and assume it is over their heads. "I'm going to explain now how radio spectroscopy works" - "okay....oh, look, a cloud..."
This is one of the most important videos on youtube. Thank you Destin for sharing this video to the public. I’m so happy to see so many faces I’ve worked with on here; especially the ice queen and the others at NIC!
I never thought I'd find ice as interesting as I did when Andy started explaining it xD
From a Navy Veteran, thank you for recognizing us. You are the best! Thank you! Thank you!
This series is genuinely my favourite bit of 'content' on the internet in the last few years. Thank you to yourself and all those involved in making it happen.
Destin: "So tell me what you do."
Everyone: ICE
Everyone: Solid... water
Revan Bonus points for people who use the long-form name: hexagonal ice (ice Ih)
nICE
ice ice ice....cue music
Everyone cares about ice.
As long as it is not melting, the horrors the book I am reading (Ark by Stephen Baxter) won't be happening at any significant level.
i've been on the polar star ice cutter before, I went on it for a boy scout project, i didn't know it was such a big deal.
"my camera gear might not work at these temperatures"
my video instantly freezes
Love the videos man, thanks for making me smarter every day!
i love how Destin's voice immediately peaked at retro reflectors
Destin basically does everything that we've ever dreamed
And everything that we never dreamed
Yep.
Earning a degree in engineering is a thing
@Shadow_of_Christ Yes, "we"
@wide Putin incorrect we would mean all of his followers and I def would never do this might want to learn about the word "I"
@Shadow_of_Christ who says im referring we to his followers. I'm referring to all of the rons out there.
Destin, I love watching your videos because you're always like an excited 10-year old kid exploring and learning about the world! Keep it up, and thanks for the great content!
Your videos are fascinating. I really enjoyed this video, and can’t wait to see the whole series.
Excellent, Destin! I'm so glad you were able to do this. I'm riveted by the footage and your conversations with the many people involved. Superb job!

Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience. And here is what I want to say:
This was an absolutely incredible experience. The Navy personnel and Academic Research Scientists who kept me safe were incredibly professional. Every person I met was exceptional. Also, can I just say that the experience of going underway in a submarine was INCREDIBLE. I'm still trying to decide how I want to release the footage (when I receive the last of it after it's been OPSEC cleared). Right now I'm leaning towards a series of videos similar to a Smarter Every Day Deep Dive on the submarines. The name is certainly fitting!
I've also given a lot of thought to recent events here at home and around the world. It occurs to me that the US Navy brings stability and security to the world in a very unique way these days. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to meet these individuals so I now know how professional these people are.
I also want to say thank you to people who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. My goal is to make intelligent, humble, respectful content. I was given approval for this experience provided I could purchase all the necessary cold weather gear and find a way to get there. Patrons of Smarter Every Day made that happen, so thank you to everyone who partners with me to make this kind of content by supporting at https://www.patreon.com/smartereveryday. If you're new here, please consider a sub! (lol)
Warm Regards,

@Hussain ...a strong offense is the best defense.
Hussain - 2021-02-28
@ScottHz you are right in a way, but its also the responsibility of the US pilots and soldiers not to target civilians and its also the responsibility of the politicians. If you tell me no us soldiers have done any war crimes individually, I beg you to rethink. Look at Abu graib in Iraq and then speak again. Yes the blame goes to higher ups but it also goes to the bottom tier equally, sense they went into the job knowing they are doing something wrong.

GEORGE FLOYD WAS NOT MURDERED. He died of an OVERDOSE .... exacerbated by an UNDERLYING HEART CONDITION.
