VICE - 2018-12-10
There has always been a morbid fascination around serial killers, with hundreds of true crime books, countless documentaries, TV and feature films inspired by real life murder stories. VICE interviews Paul Harrison about his career as a serial killer profiler. He interviewed more than 70 different serial killers and mass murderers to find out more about their psyches. He tells us about the times he spoke to Charles Manson, the Yorkshire Ripper and John Wayne Gacy. I'm sorry his dad abused him when he was younger, I'm glad he grew up and made something of himself.
Osman Oglu it’s simply an acknowledgement from another person of the suffering and as a human being you try and connect and “feel” for them . It’s simply that , it’s not saying or conveying that you actually literally did it , but instead a sign of simply trying to connect
I hate when people say shit like this being abused doesn’t make you a bad person or mean that that’s the only thing you could ever do being abused and abusing are two very different things
God bless him! 🙏🙏🙏
Me too. Good for him.
@Osman Oglu it's a way of showing sympathy and compassion, doesn't necessarily have to be an apology.
Honestly I'd love to see a whole documentary with this guy. He seems extremely knowledgeable.
Well he is a expert
W
That accent makes him expert.
JWG had an abuse day and suffered from head trauma.
Why would you think of putting your arm around them? Physical contact would be forbidden
I think he's full of shit
100%
Empathy towards his abusive father led him to study others. Commendable.
Not empathy so much as getting tired of crossing the wrong wires and having a bomb blow up in your face. More likely he simply wanted to find out how to hack his dad so as to stay ahead of his temper.
He could've grow up to either be a psychopath or to catch those psychopaths. Glad he chose the latter.
@triky5384 Serial killer, not psychopath. Most psychopaths aren't serial killers, nor do they necessarily commit felonies. Psychopathy is a psychological disorder, not a term for murderer as Hollywood like to make it seem. On the other hand, A serial killer May not necessarily be a psychopath at all.
@Isma'il Muslim You're right
I find nothing commendable about it. He clearly suffered trauma and he practices no empathy toward the killers. "What am I supposed to do, put my arm around him?" Condescending tones in his voice show how little he really knows about us. He's just doing the same thing as any other fraud and is profiting from other people's traumatic collapses.
Plot twist: Paul is in fact a serial killer
That's not funny that's hilarious
Hahahaha yes that would be very serial killer of him.
Paul is learning about other serial killers so he doesn’t make the same mistakes 😂
@Sydney P want to prove with on hand experiment, just give me your address
thought the same thing
"nice person" is not the same as "good person." I learned that via dating.
@Georg Tolstoj no doubt about it
Nice=sociopath/psychopath. Good=lost in translation aka not valuable in this society
This actually perfectly sums up the whole "nice guy" phenomenon. Niceness can be used as a facade to weasle your way past someones personal boundaries and cause mass havoc whereas being a good person is just genuinely decent on face-value for no reason other than it's the right thing to do without ulterior motives.
Damn sis okay I'll always keep this in mind.
Nobody asked
Vice this guy needs a 20 + min video or more. I listened to every word he said. Very interesting & wise man. These are the kind of interviews we want to seee
Quality videos
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the kind of videos, but this man has been exposed as a complete fraud
@scarletglitter l what really? what was exposed about him??
Slip & Fall School alumni?
scarletglitter l ???
to the editors: the volume of his voice is low
If everybody says it's fine then it's something on your side, you say you know how to work a computer but do you know how to work common sense?
People are going deaf and think there's something wrong with the outside world. Hilarious. And demanding that world to modify...
@Jeremie C are you a narc? How are you assuming it's the show and not you?
@Surreal 99 Read the replies and you'll see that I was far from being the only one.
MosoKaiser lol right wtf
I wanted them to ask him if he thought that anyone has the potential of becoming a serial killer. I'm curious about the nature-nurture aspect
@allison winchester I wouldn't exactly say "equal" but something to the degree of it.
@Joel Soni definitely not equal, none of them really are, but hes a great person to look at to dive deep into a mind like his.
@allison winchester
Agreed. He's soothing to listen to. That's why he's my favorite serial killer.
@Donald Trump thank you mr president 🤘
There's a great explanation that Jim Clemete, retired FBI profiler and technical adviser for Criminal Minds, gives: "Your genetics load the gun, your psychology aims it, and your experiences fire it." And I think in that regard, yes of course we all technically have the potential, because it's just a series of factors that anyone could have that lead into that mindset and behaviour, there'll be factors we don't know about most definitely, but it's just probability.
Vice has been putting up some really interesting videos of late.
Wesley O. They really have
They've been doing that
jacobitosuperstar lol no. They will never be able to go back.
They have literally dozens of powerful companies that own them now.
Disney’s gunna send some kid to Russia to try Krokodil?
No. Lol
If your iq is 90 or lower sure.
Wesley O. Nowadays a good vice video ration is about 1/10
Given his traumatic childhood and how he turned it into good in helping us understand pathological behavior, I consider him a hero.
Oh, and his holistic approach to a policy solution is brilliant.
totally agree
I consider you gullible
Wow. This was very interesting. I'm glad he didn't allow the abuse that he suffered from his father to internalize into hate.
maybe he did and ya'll don't know it?
“Allow”
How are you so sure that it’s a choice?
I suspect that he lacked the genetic aspects
He's just pretending. One day , he'll kills us all.
Who else read "A Serial Killer...." instead of the "A Serial Killer Profiler"?
Me😂😅😬
OHHHHH I WAS HALF WAY THROUGH THE VIDEO AND I STILL THOUGHT HE WAS A SERIAL KILLEERRR
Being abused is actually one of the "best" schools for people who work with criminals and abusers because you have been learning their language and behaviour pretty much since you remember existing.
@GoPackG0 So you disagree this guy has done beneficial work, directly because of his experience living with an abusive parent
My man would still change his abusive childhood to all the titles and achievements he has in the psychological field without blinking an eye.
It's also one of the 'best' ways to become one.
Jeez many serial killers experienced abuse in their childhoods. It's more about what kind of characters a person has and if they have a role model or save haven besides being abused. Not a lot of people are smart and strong enough to be like this guy.
Catarina Oliveira broscience
@L Lin This was my thought aswell.
I'd watch a movie on this guy's life.
Tv show, mind hunter
it's like he's looking for an answer from his dad in all of the serial killers he's interviewed. he has never healed. poor fellow.
You just made that up out of thin air haha, imagination is crazy. It's like you heard a therapist say something like that once, thought it was admirable and now you wanna do the same. I dont know man, dont wanna start some petty youtube beef here. I dont look down on you in anyway, I dont want to offend you either. I just thought it sounded sooo kliché that I had to say something. x) Have a nice day, Urban Joe ;D
Nemo Nym you have made your own observation as I have made mine. We’re only human. I just sensed anxiety in his story of childhood.
@Nemo Nym You 2000s babies really are a special kind of stupid.
A man who freaked out Charlie Bronson? Scary.
That prolonged look of horror after he says "I realized that only me could make me better". That mute gasp, like a part of him wants to talk about it but it's too horrible to be expressed. I've never seen anybody besides me do that.
I know right. That really resonated with me.
He mention the truth, but like he said not all people have that ability
my father did that too , locked me in bathroom all day long, locked me in dark storage room, and put cigars on my hand just so my skin burned and now hes wondering why in my 30 years of life i never have any jobs and antisocial and afraid of people lol he never did those to my older sister he only did those to me, my father is different person now hes okay as he geting older but maybe its just scarring me my whole life so even if my abuser changed im still abused inside
My father was horribly abusive as well, to me and my mother and 2 younger sisters.
Now that he is in his late sixties he's just kind of shorter, weaker, pathetic old man.
In his thirties he was sadistic.
Yo love and light brethren. You are more of a human being than myself.
Grow a pair of nuts and some hair on your chest. You didn’t die and you made it to age 30. your aware of your mental stage and the reasons behind it? And your still not doing anything about it? Quit sulking and trying to get people to feel sorry for you, DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE don’t let your past be the nail on your coffin for failure
It’s because he is to weak and you can overpower him now that you are stronger and he is old and weak
Bongo Foo stfu, it’s pretty clear you have never gone through any type of abuse.
I would like to know what does he think about a serial killer who kills bad people, a vigilante if you will, someone like the fictional TV character Dexter Morgan who kills pedophiles for example. I hope someday you make a documentary on vigilantes.
Pretty sure most of the time they have a super-hero complex or God complex
That doesn't happen in real life you virgin. There are no "Robin Hood" serial killers in reality. Stop learning from fictional TV shows
An easier way for you to answer your own question would be to ask you that if you really feel that way and believe that only murdering 'bad people' would be somewhat justified or at least noble, than why don't you do it yourself? You'll come to the quick conclusion that you couldn't take someone's life because of a natural feeling of empathy and your consciousness telling you over and over again of the amount of guilt you'd feel and the constant fear of punishment you'd be living in.
Serial killers don't have access to that way of thinking. They can't consciously make the decision to only kill 'Bad guys'. They're not into the moral judgement thing, it's an urge they get and the typically go after easy or vulnerable targets.
Dexter is absolutely fictional, his character doesn't protray anything near an actual serial killer.
There are a few different profiles that link to that behavior. We start to think about NPD and other personality disorders.
Unfortunately there have been a few killers like that--the problem is that it begins to spiral out of control. They go from killing paedophiles to killing anyone who they disagree with or perceive to be doing something they despise. The root is still that behavior of killing--much different from the one town that banded together to kill one man who had been terrorizing them. That was 'true' vigilante justice.
This profiler is a liar. His book got pulled off sale for apparantly lying saying he did somd inteviewing with the fbi and also lying he met some serial killers. Google paul harrison profiler. Thumbs this up
Sucks to hear he was BS-ing. Really liked the interview.
Wasn't it just an accusation, rather than a confession ?
@Abigail Cozzolino No he did admit it
Aw poor baby was so little still trying to figure out why his dad was so cruel to him ☹️ that actually made me sad. At least he made something out of it. Seems he’s had a great mind from a very young age 💚
I didn’t see the word “profiler” in the title and for a second I thought a serial killer would be in the video...
Anonymous [26490] sameee
It takes one to know one...
Yea same here
What an interesting fella.
I agree
I feel like this guy has some dark secrets of his own...
@Tasin Al-Hassan psychopath doesn't mean murder necessarily
@?? No,most psychopaths don't murder.
@Tasin Al-Hassan yes most dont
Cuz you went to the bathroom on mommy’s dishes?
It's all a cover
I feel like if this guy wasn’t a serial killer profiler he would’ve been a serial killer himself
It takes one to know one 😜
Chris Hansen I cant see it tbh, I feel like he has a whole lot of empathy and sympathy!!
@Rachael Burt some serial killers think they are doing society a favour so some can feel those emotions
@?? absolutely
I can't even imagine the level of dissociation required to commit such acts!
Because you have a soul! 😍
@Lorrie Smith stop it right now LORRIE!
Wasnt he recently exposed for not actually having interviewed these people?
Really?
I put the 'hot' in psychotic yep! you can find many articles about it online
I put the 'hot' in psychotic yeah he was it’s ducked up honestly what a bad letdown
Huh? Fr?
Charles Manson was not a good manipulator. He just surrounded himself with morons.
Ray Mack ~mmmm. Bit hyperbolic. He clearly had his tricks and underlying methods. He used to get his followers to mirror what he did, to get them to identify with Manson’s actions and emotions. He’d pull a funny face and he’d get others to mirror this. Furthermore, your point is valid to an extent because his victims were vulnerable socially and physically. Thereby meaning that with additional drugs; they were very ‘easy’ to direct.
He alienated vulnerable, young people and used them. He’s a narcissistic sociopath. If it wasn’t them he would have found others to use. The group who did the killing has no excuse though. I’m not defending what they did, it was horrendous. Still it wasn’t just the drugs or the groups intelligence that wasn’t the cause. It was their own issues that opened them up to his deception and manipulation.
If you listen to the way he speaks in interviews you’ll see he’s a manipulator, notable fact is he preached a lot about wanting peace and the ongoing global issues, making him seem like a good man and turned around from the fact that he drugged innocent, young, insecure humans to kill for him....on top of pimping women. Using this tactic is what got the people to trust him.
You guys should try get an interview with John Douglas. He literally wrote the book on serial killers and violent crime and coined the term "Serial Killer"
True example of whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger this man suffered at the hands of his father to become a profiler sad but in way very inspiring
BREAKING NEWS: Cereal killer guilty of pouring milk before adding the cornflakes.
Atreus Lothbrook true crime stories
Maniac!
Reminds me of the guy from Sherlock who called himself a cereal killer
I add beer ganggang
Anyone who eats cornflakes is def a serial killer.
Manson shouldn’t be in the thumbnail
“Only me can make me better...”
You’re a strong man, thank you for your wisdom 👏🏻
You know someone is scary when they creep out Charles Bronson.
Me after a day of binge watching videos about Ted Bundy
Some part of me feels like, if this guy hadn’t found that outlet for his trauma, he would have become the very thing he studies now. A serial killer.
Video about serial killers has Manson on the thumbnail who never killed a single person himself.
he still ordered others to, so he's a serial killer by proxy
Charles Manson never made anyone do anything they didn’t wanna do. Yes he was crazy, but keeping him in prison for life while the actual murderers got out is insane to me.
If someone told you to murder someone and you were dumb enough to listen I don't think the person should get death row. I'm a divorcee of a man with ASPD he managed to manipulate me but nothing he said would have made kill a person.
Death by proxy. He was the mastermind behind it all. He’s a serial killer.
They were all high on lsd for months if I told them to jump off a bridge to test the laws of gravity they would of done it.
HUGE respect for this guy
Seems like a top bloke.
Yeah these are NOT the 10 question I would wanna ask
2:24 went from mister profile your killer to mister steal your girl in seconds
His reasoning for going into profiling is exactly my reason as well. I always wanted to understand why my mother was so abusive and why I didn't turn out as a bad person..
How to treat a serial killer according to a serial killer.
Ghostus Coyote no he’s just a serial killer profiler
David Wendell nah I think that was his suggestion for another vid
Or maybe a mockery of the other less interesting series? (Imo.. Don't @ me)
@Maryam•Ethereal Movement Productions happy new year
Ted cruz is the zodiac killer
He could be anyone thats whats scary about serialkillers.
Facts
@Douglas Patrick he has a time machine
No the fuck he’s not lol
law suit
"Why are you being so cold & heartless?" Projection at his finenest 👌
Had to watch this to make sure I wasn’t on the list
UGH IT'S JOE hey joe! hope you’re having a good day!
I'm onto you, you won't get away with anything.
It's always the friendly ones
I got an ad right after that last line. "These people are real, and we don't know who they are." Ad plays "KNOCK KNOCK!" xD
Lol, the thumbnail looks like The Anime Man
he is incredibly strong, you can tell he's meditated on is human-hood. I respect his decision to speak out greatly.
Eikbyrnir - 2018-12-10
45 minute videos on making bongs out of fruit or taking drugs and a 7 minute video on a serial killer profiler. Makes sense Vice.
titlewave - 2020-06-14
chyaaaaaaaaa lol..
to be fair he’s pretty much a Marge Simpson of the “edgy” political world. like when white kids don’t wanna listen to their parents who tell them to make their bed, they have jordan peterson to do it for them(^∇^)
it’s not to laugh at someone who claims to be a part of “the intellectual dark-web”. like ooohhhhh he’s so dark and mysterious. he’s the guy who claims woman wear make-up specifically to impress the opposite sex. that Vice interview is so good, because jordan will say something like i just said, and then the interviewer will be like, “okay...so what are you implying??”
he sets up his fans to be these ass-pinching, woman hating, soy boys.
