Isocyanogen Tetrabromide from Na Azotetrazole

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-26

Bromine rips apart our precious tetrazole groups to form an obscure molecular motif, needed to make the famed C2N14 energetic compound.

These videos are always such a treat. Thanks Extractions &Ire, very cool. If you don't mind me asking, what's the music that starts at about 5:07?

Garbled User - 2019-09-23

Finally we are no one...

@Extractions&Ire aphex twin boiiiiiii

semirrahge - 2019-10-01

Clearly Aphex Twin, but glad to know the title!

Jaycob Whaley - 2020-11-29

Literally so happy other people were wondering too!

science_and_anonymous - 2019-01-26

I actually asked you to make this like 2 years ago, and you said "it's too difficult and dangerous". Goes to show how far you've come

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-28

It's good to know I'm improving, thanks for that thought!

pikachu 922 - 2020-09-22

@Extractions&Ire inb4 Octanitrocubane in 2025

DIGITAL VHS - 2021-08-05

@pikachu 922 you might not be too far off

Humberto Diaz Suarez - 2021-11-13

@pikachu 922 Replying from the future that this actually seems more plausible now.

ReactiveChem - 2019-12-04

Great vid, I’m planning on doing a synth of this soon, I already have my procedure all figured out but are there any extra tips that you found helpful?

Extractions&Ire - 2019-12-04

Have spare bromine, so if you see the white secondary product coming out still after the reflux, my feeling is adding more bromine at that point will help drive the reaction further. Good luck!

ReactiveChem - 2019-12-04

Extractions&Ire ok, thanks so much

Jaycob Whaley - 2020-11-29

Thank you for the amazing content as usual! Your choice of music is extremely good! The sped up part of the video matched the the drum so well. You are by far my favorite channel to watch, no one comes even close.

UnREACHable Chemistry - 2019-01-27

Very cool! Congrats for the successful preparation. (Scary nitrogen counts both in the starting material and in the end product, though.)

Alex Taunton - 2020-05-06

I'm quickly becoming a huge fan of your videos, nice blend of good editing, blunt humor and good chemistry. I'm gonna keep commenting on your videos and bug you to try n find a way to synthesize heptanitrocubane, or HC8N7O14 hahaha I wanna see what kinda bang that makes

washer2345 - 2019-01-27

I would try to bring the rest of you product forward ASAP. I cannot imagine that it is stable at RT let alone wet and not under Argon

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-28

You mean the isocyanogen tetraazide? It actually appears to be pretty stable at room temperature

Tomas Asadauskas - 2019-03-06

@Extractions&Ire I think he meant your target molecule in this video - isocyanogen tetrabromide, which theoretically should resemble (to some extent) carbonyl-chemistry what so, it should easily react with water and any other nucleophiles.

pineapple ‎ - 2019-01-26

Dicyanoacetylene? Fairly simple molecule, hottest burning known substance.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-26

Intriguing! Sounds like cyanide chemistry though, scary

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-26

I mean, I'm making a tetraazide so I suppose cyanides aren't too bad haha

Quintinohthree - 2019-01-26

@the rougemillenial Dehydrating an amide will also get you a cyanide. Is acetylenedicarboxylic acid within reach?

Quintinohthree - 2019-03-19

@the rougemillenial Let's brominate some fumaric or maleic acid then.

Johan P Maree - 2019-07-23

I think you should make a video give it to your lawyers if you die from one of these concoctions and they can release it let us know that you didn't make it

BambiTrout - 2020-09-08

Bromine is such an evil looking substance. Like there is no way you could ever look at bromine and think "This is a chemical that I can trust"

terawattyear - 2019-01-27

Ah, the joy at the end of, “It works!” How rarely it comes but so delicious when it does. Good job!

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-28

It's such a good feeling! I was so excited!!

Shaina Shortcake - 2019-02-09

I’ve been away from chemistry for a while, so I’m sorry that I’ve not been an active viewer for a while. It’s good to see that you’re still an active producer though!

Extractions&Ire - 2019-02-23

I'm glad you like watching the videos mate, I'm going to just keep making them forever it seems haha

La Rose Rouge et Noir - 2019-02-04

Could you turn it into a tetrazole ring? Four to sixish tetrazole groups all bound together?

a blind sniper - 2022-01-02

Possible tool for water bath: a sous vide cooker machine thing. Theyre really good at holding water at a specific temperature for long periods of time.

Henrik Jørgensen - 2019-08-09

"Ran all this time, just couldn't handle being put in a kettle."
That one had me laughing!

Nope - 2019-09-16

Been an avid watcher since your white phosphorus video on explosions&fire and found this. I'll be honest most of it is beyond me chemistry is really not my area of expertise. But it is still very enjoyable to watch so thanks for your hard work!

Extractions&Ire - 2019-09-17

Thanks! It means a lot, i know these videos can be very technical (which is why I made two channels) but it's always nice to hear people enjoy the content if they don't follow all the technical details

Garrett - 2019-09-06

Have you checked to see if your local hardware store sells potassium permanganate in the water treatment section? In the US you can find it easy since it is used for in-home treatment of drinking water to remove dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from the water supply through oxidation and filtration of the oxidized solids. I can get about a kilo of the stuff for around $30.

J H - 2020-12-04

Is the bromine you used the stock that was contaminated with the BrCl?

Max McCormick - 2019-01-26

Omfg you're making azidoazide azide yesss

Science 007 - 2019-01-26

Azides and Tetrazoles i love it !!!!❤️❤️❤️

A swiss lab: In the winter, the DMSO freezes. In the summer, the ether boils.
An aussi lab: Everything boils in the aussi summer^^

Reinatr48 - 2021-05-03

Isnt the difference with the Swiss lab only 15K?

Tom's Lab - 2019-01-26

Okay, this is epic.

mrmax35 - 2019-01-26

What’s the oxygen balance of azidoazide azide?

mrmax35 - 2019-01-29

Extractions&Ire maybe I’m using a different equation but I got -29.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-29

@mrmax35 theres zero oxygen, how'd you work that number out?

mrmax35 - 2019-01-29

Extractions&Ire I screwed up the calculation the first time around.

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-29

@mrmax35 interesting, it's not often I use the actual formula, I just assumed it broke when you have no oxygen.
So yeah the math is makes sense (thanks for the cool link), but does it make any sense realistically to have an OB for a molecule with no oxygen? I suppose maybe it does, because you could compare it to say another molecule with more carbon it in, and say that 'oh the one with more carbon is more OB negative'

[Whatever name goes here] - 2019-01-26

That chuckle at the very end was the cherry on top

Fatimah Ibrahim - 2019-11-14

Did you know that N2 is 100% nitrogen? 😂

eivilcow - 2019-08-03

4:50 Did you just call the yellow crystals "beautiful"?

Marcia Osullivan - 2019-08-05

blasphemy

Boorango - 2020-11-03

Blasphemy! >:((

Meme Magic - 2020-12-13

There not yellow from sulfur contamination or unwanted by-product formation though, and those are the main bad yellows. Still slightly blasphemous though

Kash JPM - 2022-02-09

bromine is such a cool element

Dog Shake - 2020-12-19

Didn't think id hear some Richard D James tunes here, love it.

Rockscanfly - 2019-12-09

Looks at all the nitrogens in the thumbnail
Ooh that looks fun

Mayzel Vanadate - 2021-09-20

3:43 it's just so god damn beautiful!

Ricardo Pesenti - 2019-10-07

35 to 40°C?!!! How do you survive that? Anything above 25°C is too hot for me... the 2 to 3 weeks with temps above 30°C we have here per year are too much for me and i stay in the lab with AC until the evening... and even the lab is too hot with 27 to 28°C so i usually move my desk into the room with all our GCs and HPLCs wich is the only room always at 20°C...

Ben Batista - 2020-11-19

Why not just use excess bromine in the first step? That should increase yield unless I’m mistaken.

Thomas Fenton - 2020-04-13

thanks science, very cool

Ricardo Pesenti - 2019-09-29

You need a fume hood. Hope you'll soon get enough patreon money for one^^

Hask A - 2019-01-26

Did you ever have any high yield coupons to begin with?

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-28

Honestly actually no, I'm not sure where people get them from and at this point I'm too afraid to ask

Gabriel Gray - 2019-01-27

Hah hah it was a prime day for me too untill my sulfur dioxide gas bubbler exploded and shot me in the stomach with my good stopper!

Extractions&Ire - 2019-01-28

That sounds unhealthy on several fronts mate, hope you're ok!!

JamesG - 2019-02-07

Okay! So, I have my checkbook here. How much you need for a kilo of that stuff?

ATLHooligan - 2020-09-02

I like your channel

Matthijs Mobach - 2020-08-19

Is it a coincidence that your lab/shed looks like an abandoned bunker?

No offence btw, love the videos

Extractions&Ire - 2020-08-20

I mean, it's not an actual bunker, but it's definitely an over engineered shed. Concrete walls and a smoothed concrete floor... these days it would just be built with tin
