I wish i could work with them 😊 Believe it or not but these people are the REALEST of anybody i have ever met. I used to do CNA/HHA care with the Alzheimer's and dementia unit back in 2006-2009 before i got sick and yes days could be challenging but then there are days where i didn't want to leave.

I wish my nana that just passed from covid-19 had the chance to be apart of something like this because its simply beautiful.

Calligraphy - 2021-06-26

Alzheimer's is extremely heartbreaking to deal with, I'm sorry you're going through it. One thing that may help her remember is any sort of songs you both have memories of. Memory when it comes to sounds/songs is generally unaffected or less effected. It may help her to at least remember those moments you had together :>

Alzheimer’s is one of the worst things ever to be. It literally eats away at your brain until you are gone and it does it twice, first when it takes away all of your memory, and second when it takes your life. It makes me tear up writing this and I don’t even know anyone who has it so far but I hope they find a cure

cwbyfan93 - 2020-05-31

This is truly one of my greatest fears in life, whether it’s myself or a loved one. God bless these people and anyone who helps care for the elderly. It says a lot about a society the way they treat their elders. Mushroom therapy has shown promising results in combatting the progression of the disease and who knows, it could even lead to a prevention of the disease which is the ultimate goal.

Vxvxvxxx - 2020-06-10

I work in care with dementia and that , music is the key always and doing that job and being 25 has showed me the importance of family and after you turning old you only have memories left , I’ve seen doctors , teachers etc and seeing there family reminisce together really showed me that your impact as character and a person will always out way your materials and your life goals as they talk about laughing together as a family , also I’ve seen people pass without no one there but use and we show utter respect and love and that will humble you , go out and enjoy that life , you can’t escape getting old. So just chill and enjoy life please.

Took the words out of my mouth. I also cried when I found out my grandpa started getting Alzheimer’s which made me picture in my head what it’ll be like if my dad (since it’s genetic) will come down with it.

Alzheimer’s always disturbed me from a young age, just the nature of this particular mental illness’s symptoms are so uniquely cruel and torturous to both the victim and their loved ones. It’s like death except drawn out over several years and you get to watch them slowly die up close and personal, day by day. I’m not a religious or spiritual person, but Alzheimer’s truly seems malicious by design.

Any of y’all got grandparents with this play music they know from back then. My friend did this and her grandfather got up and started to dance and remembered her name. If you guys have tried this I’d love to hear your story.

dizz672 - 2020-05-08

George Washing machine played walking the floor over you by Ernest Tub (my grandpas favorite song by him back in the day) he probably hadn’t heard it in 15 to 20 years and he sung nearly every word. Truly remarkable

Queen Mel - 2020-05-14

My great grandpa went dancing every week & they played songs from when he was young and he LOVED it! He could dance better than any man I’d ever saw & you never would have thought it looking at my country, farmers tanned lanky grandpa. He could out dance all the other people in there. They loved him. He was amazing! And those dances gave him something to look forward to. He got cancer & still went every week going thru radiation because it made him feel alive, he loved it.

One of the saddest parts of Alzheimer’s is that, my grandparents were for equality between the races, but as my grandp developed Alzheimer’s he could only remember what he was around when he was young and slowly slipped into being slightly prejudice again!. It’s terrible but I know he can’t help it.

I remember my old great grandma, as she was going out, would say stuff about gypsies and Mexicans , she’s clutch her purse around Blacks and Latinos . She only did it in the last few years. She was born in like 1918 and was an immigrant to this country herself ironically

Cock n Ball Torturer - 2020-07-02

My grandmother went out to all the civil rights marches and was incredibly involved in the Civil rights movement, and now she has kind of lost that spirit just because of old age. I know it's not what she truly wants in her heart though. Just remember if your grandparents are ever saying that they are most likely not supportive of that when they were in their youth, its just old age.

Imagine being 30 years old and going to your local grocery store, then the clerk tells you you're actually 90 and have dementia and you're in this dementia village.

Hollis Cooper - 2020-05-17

An eighty year old man walks up to you very worried about his mother. "Where is my mother? I can't find her!" He's scared. Do you tell him his mother is dead, and watch him grieve and ask what happened, or do you say, "Well, I haven't seen her for a bit, she probably had something to do. Let's sit down and have some coffee and a cookie."? He'll probably ask for his mom several times a day. Do you want to put him through trauma multiple times a day, every day until his condition gets to the point where he forgets her, or do you want to distract him from the anxieties that dementia causes and give him something calming to focus on? This is the reality. "Reality orientation" is cruel, "validation" is kindness.

CherBear - 2020-07-23

@GuizarC no..they don't know the diff..at least not in the mid to late stages..but they don't feel useless anymore..

CherBear - 2020-07-23

When I fist became an Alzheimer's nurse we were told..just agree..go along with whatever the patient says..few years later they sais..nope..be honest n simply redirect or distract..thar seemed to work better..at least we weren't treating them like they weren't important enuf to be honest..even if the did forget 5 minutes later..
Dementia is an age related forgetfulness..alzheimers is when you go backwards in age mentally..kinda like Benjamin button but on the brain..by the time the patient dies..usually from pneumonia or a fall or broken hip..not Alzheimers itself..the patient has an age of a 10 year old or younger..

Every old person I've talked to doesn't want to live their last few years in isolation. That is 100x worse than dying of Covid. They are going to die anyways. Forcing people into quarantines who don't even want it is salem witch trial level stupid. History will judge this generation poorly.

Silvia Fox - 2020-09-22

@WAT - "History will judge this generation poorly." I've heard young and old people alike say things like this for decades! There will likely be no generation seen as "good" in any way with how high people's expectations or demands are. There will always be something to complain about and some opinionated people will always be louder than they should be.

My grandmother died of Alzheimer’s a few months ago and this is an incredible idea. I never knew her before she had it but saw her health slowly degrade and near the end she was no longer talking and if she did the phrases they made were nonsensical. She was miserable and confused the entirety of it. It makes me happy to see someone not in that state. It hurts so much to see them like that but seeing them happy is incredible and I wish I could have provided that for my grandma before she was gone.

My mum has early onset vascular dementia and her main fear is losing her independance.

She needs meals delivered to her because she always forgets to eat, so I tell her that I need her to be healthy so she can take care of me.
I call to tell her to check the letterbox for me just so she'll bring in the mail. When I visit home, I let her do my washing and I ask her to pick out food for my dinner. I ask her to come to doctors appointments with me.

I'm an adult but also her youngest, so she feels like it's her duty to look after her baby. It makes her feel useful and gives her a reason to do all the things she's scared of doing.

Legends Never Die disable is a very board term, that encompasses many varying needs, and specialties and understanding. I think comparing an understanding of black history to all of those who fall under that category of ‘disabled’ doesn’t quite work for the comparison.

It is difficult to say what will offend some one who is disabled, you don’t know what disability they may have, but black people? Their are certain things you know are inappropriate to say. (Of course they may vary slightly personally however, you would not call a black person the n word all hand, or tell them to sit at the back of the bus, etc)

I’m not sure a person suffering from blindness, someone suffering for dehabilitating migraines, or an amputee, would agree on much at all , they have no shared experience, but they are all considered disabled. Being offensive to each would vary completely.

What I’m saying is, people know what is offensive to black people and are quick to jump to there aid because it is one popular and widespread shared history that you can relate someone to with a glance. Very few people know what particular then may offend each specific disability. And at the very least they know enough to know this, and care about your feelings enough to try. Correct them gently. But they care to try in the first place, to think on what they know and try there best to not hurt or offended...that’s good people. We can’t know everything,

@Talia L You can offend someone who is blind the same way you can offend someone with muscular dystrophy. Sadly, most people put anyone they deemed as not "normal" as someone who is less than. So yes, it's easy to offend any of us by acting that way. We all know that feeling because we all have people who look at us that way. So it makes those of us who are differently abled become defensive. If you have something that puts you in that category, you can understand that feeling.

One day my grandma and I went shopping at the mall near us, and there was this lady about 70-80 years old, and we went over to her, and asked her if she needed help. She said she couldn’t find her car, and her son lives too far away to help her. We asked her if she wanted to ride in my grandmas car so she wouldn’t have to walk as far. She said yes and we helped her find her car, which was way at the other side of the mall. Once she got in her car, we led her to the nursing home that she lives in, and she got there safely. I’m still so happy that my grandma and I were able to help a poor old woman with dementia find her car. ☺️

She should not have been driving. That was very sweet if you and your grandma.

I get emotion looking at people who’s lifes are almost over. Especially when they have a disease like Alzheimers.

Same here just thinking that we're are all heading that way( old)makes me sad 😥

My last memory of my grandmother was hugging her on thanksgiving, only for her to stare at me like I was a complete stranger. Alzheimer’s is one of the only diseases I know of that affects the ones around the sufferer more than it does the person who actually has it.

A month later her body forgot how to do 80% of its regular functions, and on December 23rd of that same year she was gone.

I’ll always love you Mimi❤️

Comments like these make me realize how lucky I am that none of my grandparents have or had Alzheimer’s. ❤️

@gunner jax You really are! Spend as much time as possible with them.

I just lost my grandad to Alzheimer’s yesterday. It’s been so tough to watch. But he’s finally at peace.
