Incendiary silver – silver acetylide contact explosive

Royal Society Of Chemistry - 2017-03-01

Calcium carbide and the ethyne gas it produces on contact with water are a rich source of exciting demonstrations. In previous demonstrations we have explored ethyne’s unsaturation and used it to propel food cans into the air (see http://rsc.li/EiC217ec), but in this video we produce a contact explosive capable of producing some impressive bangs.

Warning! Pure silver acetylide is more sensitive to friction (and - likely- impact ) than the double salt!!!!

Back in 1971, my brother blew half his hand off when he pulled a glass stopper off a bottle where some had dried at the rim.

That's weird. He probably made the pure stuff. The double salt is more powerful but less sensitive according to people. I made the double salt and it is very insensitive to shock (withstood multiple hard hits from a steel hammer) and friction but very sensitive to flame and apparently static electricity. I never stored mine but I've heard that storing it in water can leech out the silver nitrate making it more sensitive and less powerful. Sorry to hear that happened it's a costly price to pay for the pursuit of knowledge.

I love how the RSC has a video demonstrating how to make a dangerous high explosive and the person in the vid doesn't wear gloves lmao

thats 1 way,i'do suggest adding a excess of hno3 in the silver solution, yields alot more Sads

Declan Fleming - 2018-07-02

ParaFanta's HQ the reaction is setup to ensure no more than 0.5 g is produced for legal reasons so insufficient yield not a concern :)

thanks :)

Benedict Gilkes thanks for letting us know. Hopefully get someone to look into this in the morning.
