Make MnSO4 from MnO2 [2 ways]

NurdRage - 2010-03-15

How to Make Manganese Sulfate from Manganese Dioxide. We'll show two ways on how to do this. One using sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, and another using sulfur dioxide.

First the manganese dioxide must be thoroughly washed and filtered to remove all soluble contaminants like zinc chloride and ammonium chloride.

In the first method 30grams of oxalic acid, 300mL of water, and 13mL of sulfuric acid are mixed together. Then the manganese dioxide is continually added until the solution stops bubbling.

In the second method. The manganese dioxide is mixed with water and an excess of sulfur dioxide is bubbled through. The reaction produces manganese dioxide directly.

Finally, after both methods. The mixture is filtered to give pink manganese sulfate.

This will eventually be used to make manganese dioxide electrodes.

@MWGrossmann: Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm happy that my questions address common problems/concerns that others have as well. Also, I am overjoyed to say that I did complete this experiment in its entirety a few months ago, and, as any good scientist, I made detailed notes in my Lab Notebook. I ended with beautiful pink crystals. I hope to make a video on it sometime in the near future, detailing my exact procedure, complete with pictures of my final product. Thanks again!

Necrowitch - 2010-03-15

I love videos explaining equipment and the why to this or that! <3

NurdRage - 2010-03-15

@johnschmeisser what happens with almost all heavy metal salts: Pain, Suffering, and death usually all 3

Jflow89 - 2010-06-18

@NurdRage : That was my initial reaction. I don't see any precipitate though. Oh well. :) Thanks again!

karinini garcia - 2016-12-08

I really really like your video, you make it so easy. I have a question, to crystallize it is only need evaporation?

digdugdiggy - 2010-03-15

Do you use a voice modulator in your videos? I love the science! Thanks!

c0ldelement - 2010-03-22

As usual you rock NurdRag!! \m/

Francisco Amarante - 2010-03-15

Another great video, cant wait for the next

redone632 - 2010-03-15

Awesome video :) was waiting for your next one!

purplemutantas - 2011-08-04

Why is it that on so many chemistry videos people mention illegal drugs? It really irritates me. Crap like that is only going to make things harder for home chemists. It's because of this that I am going to have to limit my experiments to things that don't generate fumes. I don't have a fume hood and I am hesitant to do things outside. I live in an apartment and I don't want my neighbors thinking I am making meth.

Petko Tzvetkov - 2017-09-12

Man do not be scared. Science needs courage, it has been that way since the first alchemists.... The whole mess around developing home science is becouse of the corporation's fears the you can get away of them making range of high-priced products and medicines by themselves!!

Kev - 2018-05-25

purplemutantas make a little fume hood with a hydroponic tent and a carbon filter inline fan or a hepa type air purifier. Also if it not doing anything illegal u have nothing to fear. The only concern will be safety.

Wynter The Blue Wolf - 2019-03-30

Haha I use my stove as a fume hood. Its really bad of me i know but honestly its done a decent enough job. I mean I'm not dead yet. I did however throw some lithium in a bottle of water and capped it outside. I accidentally used too much lithium and it didnt fully dissolve into hydroxide before exploding and sent molten lithium and fire everywhere. Thanks for the snow. Also my neighbors were quite concerned. All 25 other apartments were looking at me confused wondering why a water bottle just exploded in a molten metal fire ball....

jester5022 - 2010-03-15

i love all of his videos and i hope he keeps making them for a long time.

Dmitry Shintyakov - 2016-10-12

I successfully used citric acid instead of oxalic. I used the following process:
Add sulfuric acid (36%) to the battery paste, with a slight excess; stir it; then add citric acid in small portions. Reaction starts after 10-20 seconds, producing bubbles of CO2 and lots of heat.

nattsurfaren - 2010-03-15

Love this stuff

starshock01 - 2010-10-11

can you use electrolysis of MgSO4 to form so3, and pass it over manganese metal to make MnSO4?

Sub_Uber - 2010-03-19

Very informative and unique!

SuperKillerkarnickel - 2011-01-31

Does the oxalic+Sulfuric Acid work for other acids as well like oxalic+acetic acid to create manganese acetate?

carambatsr - 2010-03-15

Most excellent video. Thanks again for the enlightenment and hard (but great fun) work. Could these methods be used to purify the crap stuff that you (and I) bought on EBay? Will the silica / sand get involved in the reaction?

Plikky Dee - 2010-03-16

I love this channel. I love how each session seems to be relevant to later sessions.

Cole Dalton - 2021-08-22

i guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly lost my password. I love any tips you can give me

Luciano Ricardo - 2021-08-22

@Cole Dalton instablaster =)

Cole Dalton - 2021-08-22

@Luciano Ricardo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.

Cole Dalton - 2021-08-22

@Luciano Ricardo It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out !

Luciano Ricardo - 2021-08-22

@Cole Dalton Glad I could help :D

Gotta love old videos

spicy bbq #tasty - 2010-03-15

Great video! Could acetic acid be used as an oxidizer instead of oxalic acid?

Shyam kishore Kumar - 2019-01-01

Can we use ascorbic acid as a reducing agent instead? Coz it's dirt cheap.... (vitamin C)

Luigi pulls the master sword - 2021-07-07

should work I reckon

neald27 - 2015-10-03

one way to remove the iron contaminates the MnO2/C paste can be reacted with sulfuric acid heated (note this has a tendency to boil over so heat but do not boil) The MnO2 and Mn2O3 (left over after discard of battery) will not dissolve this is washed and reacted like in this video

spiderdude2099 - 2020-11-02

Please detail how you recrystallize the manganese sulfate. Do you mean just slowly let an aqueous solution evaporate? Supersaturated it and cool it? If so, how?

thebestofall007 - 2015-05-15

You can also make MnSO4 by reacting elemental manganese with sulfuric acid (would it be as straight forward as this?)

Mn + H2SO4 --> H2 + MnSO4

DevilsVideos1 - 2015-08-04

@***** If you use dillute H2SO4, then your equation is right. But if your acid is concentrated, then you'll get a redox reaction: Mn+2H2SO4(conc)->MnSO4+SO2+2H2O. As you can see, this wastes sulfuric acid, also, probably, some of MnSO4 will be oxidised to Mn(+3). So, be sure to dillute your acid to achieve the best results.

thebestofall007 - 2015-08-04

@DevilsVideos1
Gotcha.

NurdRage - 2010-03-15

@Hydroxybenzeen Oxalic acid turns into carbon dioxide after being used, which bubbles away. How are you going to separate ascorbic acid?

GMC Labs - 2016-02-08

is oxcilic acid still needed if you started with pure MnO2? I wonder is a strong magnet can be used to purify the battery paste, to take out the Fe.

TheGinginator14 - 2016-06-24

Yes, oxalic acid reduces Mn (IV) ions to Mn(II) ions, without it you would have no reaction. You could alternatively use sulfurous acid which reacts according to the equation
MnO2 +H2SO3 ->MnSO4 + H2O

BerliozT - 2011-11-08

I love when i watch these videos while im high, because when he said "stock" i was laughing so hard. aha

@dick manmaan Oh yeah I was

Dirk the Daring - 2010-12-28

Great videos, but just one question: do you have a lab in you house or you perform all these experiment in a lab from a school or a college?

dogdaysunrise - 2010-11-30

Wow,man, heavy metal salts,so now i can make my meal taste as a Marshall.

milotickz - 2010-03-15

Might I ask: What's MnSO4 used for?

Mtn Cbt - 2013-04-29

You can also use ascorbic acid(vit. C). It is an anti-oxidant(reducing acid)

TacomaBro - 2010-03-15

i totally don't understand all of this, but is very interesting to watch, i love these videos thank you.

israel burkett - 2021-03-03

Could you use caros acid to oxidize there carbon before bubbling so2?

NurdRage - 2010-03-15

@Serostern No, the iron oxides are not all magnetic and they're not separate particles, but fused the manganese. Can you extract iron from your blood with a magnet?

purplemutantas - 2012-05-10

I like your sulfur dioxide setup. I was thinking of doing a similar setup for solvent recovery after a soxhlet extraction. Normally I distill most of the solvent and boil off the rest outside. Here is what I have in mind. Upside down 24/40 powder funnel, female/female adapter, still head, liebig condenser, and a vacuum takeoff adapter hooked to a vacuum pump. Although I am a bit concerned that this might not get all the acetone fumes. I will have to try it with water and see how that goes.

BobsyourAuntie - 2010-03-15

Your videos are interesting even though I have no idea what you're talking about. The one I really liked was the one with your hand in liquid nitrogen, that was cool. =D

Jflow89 - 2010-03-15

No, it's a simple redox reaction. We see that the Manganese is in the +4 state and each Carbon in the oxalic acid is in the +3 state. Thus, the oxalic acid reduces the manganese to the +2 state, and in turn the carbon itself is oxidized to the +4 state, in the form of carbon dioxide.

Antonio Guardado - 2010-03-15

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clown Whisper - 2015-01-19

it would be cool if you made a video showing how to make a chemical scrubber to put between your collection vessel and pump!,  most people dont have teflon protected pumps!

just a thought

Daan Roelofs - 2013-05-01

I don't understand a word you say but i LOVE watching this

NurdRage - 2010-03-21

@jerrydff7 In an upcoming video we're going to make electrodes with it.

NurdRage - 2010-03-15

@Astanize you can use the bag, i found it unnecessary since it evaporates just fine on it's own. That and i'm using my bag for other stuff at the moment. :)

baguazhang2 - 2013-07-21

I personally synthesize my own MnO2 from either: 1.) Heating potassium permanganate powder at 600 degrees C for 5 hours, or 2.) Adding potassium permanganate to KOH then slowly adding manganese (II) chloride to this mixture. I wash the product about 6-7 times for a pure product. Then I add known amounts of oxalic acid and sulfuric acid to product manganese sulfate. I make this for different purposes though.

stroock6394 - 2010-03-15

can you do a video about how to make 30% hydrogen peroxide? thanks

scottaw1981 - 2016-02-29

can you use a magnet to draw the iron?

Rsaramallac Hot piranha mix.

Jflow89 - 2010-06-18

@NurdRage : Makes sense! Thanks!

nikola96 - 2012-03-21

can i make manganese chloride by reaction of manganese dioxide and HCl and then add concetraced sulfuric acid. MnCl2+H2SO4=>MnSO4+2HCl ?
