P.S. Really happy to be a Patreon today. It's not often that the cost of a couple coffees gets me on board a nuclear submarine.
Out of the mouths of babes. I think it will only be a few more years for that.

2050. Back to the spear and wheel after weve blasted ourselves back to the stoneage!!!!
Hey I just wanted to let you know that the US Navy Boot camp in Great Lakes IL, is actually using your videos to teach the new recruits about their Submarines!!
I wish they did that for me I just graduated
I believe that was the intention of the navy to let him do this.
It's almost scary how smart submariners have to be to complete their mission. There's so much that can go wrong and such a small margin of error in every step of what they are doing. You gotta give credit to the Officers, Enlisted and all the personnel that provide support to them.
I scored a 93 on the ASVAB, and nuke/machinists mate was the MOS they wanted me to enlist as. I was informed that most people smart enough to work on a sub, just end up in the air force instead, and they offered me a large signing bonus($40k). I was medically DQ'd, but man I'm kind of glad in hindsight. Currently studying marine biology, so I'd rather live above the water lol.
@Connor Lipke that’s cool
Destin, these video’s make the time pass by almost instantly. They’re informative, very fun and the amount of respect between you and the crew is a blessing to watch. You set an incredible example in people interaction. Please keep doing what you do!
That's so awesome to get to see. Kudos to Captain Castellano and his crew for being so nice to you and for their service! It seemed like the entire crew was top notch!
Great stuff. Thanks for showing us something we would most likely never see.

Go forward, America! Long live the Nato! Long live freedom! Down with all dictatorships and terrorists all around the world! Best wishes from Germany!
you never saw the hunt for red october?
This video makes me feel like I made the wrong decisions in life, and I missed out on some great opportunities. Great video and great group of guys on that sub. The captain was very humble.
Great video! I can’t fully embrace the fact that it’s an actual military submarine, capable of doing hi-end operations, BUT STILL the NAVY command allowed a YouTuber in to film it even though I know they cleared it of classified data and that’s not a regular practice… I don’t think country other than the US allowed it) Greetings from Ukraine
I've never seen something like this before. Thank you for sharing this experience. I can definitely see the commitment of every member of the crew, which turns the duty an excellence experience.
there was a brilliant documentary last year in the UK where a journalist spends time with the Royal Navy on board HMS Trenchant. Have a watch of "SUBMARINE: LIFE BENEATH THE WAVES "
Due to my claustrophobia, my anxiety level increased watching this. Many, many thank you to those who dedicate their lives to protecting us. I owe you all a tremendous debt of gratitude.
“THIS is the USS Toledo.... I’m going to show it’s quirks and features, then take for a drive and give it a Doug score.”
@Chicomacheeno “Its” is 100% a word. You had every chance to look it up for yourself but instead you relied on someone else’s knowledge while they also said “I don’t think…” Learn more and learn to think for yourself.
@codars, oops. Sorry. I say a lot of things without checking first. Typos, grammar, lack of judgement, complete misunderstanding. Whatever I said may have been influenced by alcohol.
Don’t drink and type, kids!

Wtf?

Please someone tell me, it has got so many replies l feel like l'm old and out of touch. Help a 'Squid' out!
@TWEEKRSEEKR 88 , go check out a Doug DeMuro video. You’ll get it right away.
I can't say I have a specific interest in submarines, but I do have an interest in what space travel might look like in the next few decades (assuming that we manage to get there) and I can't help but think that traveling in space would bear a significant resemblance to life on a submarine.
Much respect! Takes a special kind of person to live on a submarine especially under the ice cap!
I can't thank you all enough for your dedication and service...
This was awesome! Great interviews w/ the crew; a little more reserved than the coasties but they r doing their thing underwater under ice. Very interesting, thank you 👍
Destin.....GREAT VIDEO! This is the first submarine video I've seen on youtube that wasn't a complete joke. I'm a 20 year submariner. In fact, I did the exact same job as Matt at 19:30. I can't wait to see the rest of this series. Thank you for always putting out great content.
I love how one week Destin is interviewing the captain of a nuclear submarine and a couple weeks ago he was interviewing a guy that runs a weed wacker. Only the experts for this show!
Hey!!!
I run a weed wacker.
What are you trying to say?
:-)
Helo visite
D actually does get "All the best people"...
I think he does a pretty good job.
Just goes to show you how much love and appreciation Destin has in his heart.
No racism or biases, no bigotry or judgement.
Destin loves the world, loves to learn and loves to share knowledge and will happily speak enthusiastically with anyone he can learn from or teach something to regardless of who they are. He never brings his own assumptions to a conversation and like you said: he brings the same level of enthusiasm and joy to talking to a landscaper or nuclear sub captain! He sees them both the same way, as humans with lives and knowledge to share and experiences under their belt. He understands that no one is worthless or stupid, everyone has something to share... it's just different for everyone.
That's what I appreciate most about this channel and why I'd happily support him and share his content with anyone on earth.
Destin is a rare person indeed. I'm thankful for YouTube and the internet giving him a platform to spread knowledge and curiosity with people.
Man this makes me miss the Navy. I absolutely love all things Navy. I was In naval special warfare in the 80’s and there was just so many special things about the Navy as well as all the branches. Love and respect them all. It’s a well oiled machine. I still dream about it maybe twice a week and it’s been like 35 years gone by now.
I enjoy your channel & you're always bringing quality content. This episode (& series maybe) is so enjoyable. The interviews with the crew probably my favorite part, but it was all fascinating. Great job!
This was the most amazing series of videos. I always wanted to know more about how submariners handled their situation and what their day to day is like. I'm so proud of our military, and want to thank you so much for these videos.
As a retired Chief Interior Communication Electrician from the surface fleet; this video has not only been amazing but has energized my need for knowledge of submarines. I have just subscribed and rang the bell! I'm looking forward to more of these videos.
What this video doesn’t show is the smells of the submarine.
Science stupid like cows
Science doesn't know, nuclear decay of gasoline produces fire
I did 6 patrols on an FBM Sub in the early 70's. Every time I open the refrigerators at the supermarket, It takes me back to being on the boat. It's the refrigeration and what they scrub the air with for CO2. Submariners have to be very clean or you will be notified by everybody!
The best smells in the world.
Cat pee and diesel fuel
@Holyfox - If you’re a German sailor on a diesel boat in WWII, it’s very accurate. Everything on submarines, even diesel powered ones, have improved greatly since then.
Love your video’s. They’re always fun, super interesting, incredibly informative and respectful. Every time I watch one, I’m like that’s the coolest thing ever. Until I watch another one and then I say, no THAT’s the coolest thing ever…..thumbs up for another great one showing our dedicated military men and women defending this great country!
Thank you for sharing this amazing video. I’m 50 years old and when I was younger I always wanted to join the Navy and being in a submarine but it never happened.
This is such an enjoyable and interesting series! I appreciate your intelligence, curiosity and respect for the people your interview. Thanks!
Great interview and crew, its good to see how well prepared and proud of their jobs these guys are. Hope they never have to trigger those weapons!
Love how the senior enlisted objected to entering the sleeping quarters. Looking out for his guys. Sure he was in a tough spot.
yaklin104 My regular rack was the middle just after the lateral passage. I would’ve looked out... just imagine..
Facts!
He probably didn't want the riders to see the state of the head before it got field dayed.
He was looking out for Destin 😂😂
@mostly true 😬😬😬😬
Real talk though, you definitely manage to do and film a lot of really cool stuff. Thanks for all the great content, brother.
Absolutely fascinating. Probably the best presentation of it's kind I've ever seen. God bless the men and women who reside in the depths for the sake of us all.
Loved the video! My husband was a submariner on a fast attack boat. Retired Navy and proud of it!
Besides being amazing - thank you Destin for ALL the SED clips - I see it took more than 3 months(OMG!) to get this OPSEC confirmed/ approved. (In general - regardless of editing time by you let's say...) WOW!
I love how Destin is always respectful to everyone. He is always listening and does never act like he is better than someone.
Sir, I respect you.
Thats how any respectable human should be.
and look how far he has come with it!
Hard to be cocky on a boat full of people who know more than you. That said, can’t imagine a better person to do this, Destin is smart as frig and the ideal person for this.
This is a great crew, I love the dynamic and MC is a sound chap! This is an awesome insight, thank you.
As a former sailor myself, being stationed on the Nimitz, with footage from back in the day on my channel, I always wanted to visit an active duty sub and I wonder what the process is now that I got out.
Great video on this topic. Congratulations on getting the Navy to allow you to bring it to all of us. I would think that the Navy will greatly benefit from this video in recruitment goals!
Excellent and very well done! I made three cruises on the USS Forrestal and the USS Nimitz as a member of VF-74 in the 1970’s and thought a carrier was tight quarters! Kudos to the sub sailors!
This is unbelievable to me!
I was one of those reactor operators you couldn't go see work.
I'm shocked they have you this access! This is incredible honestly.
Feel proud brother - you got GAME!
@Khizar Muhammad REAL quick! It's a pot of boiling water... Basically.
@Ju M I'm PROUD to say our of 6 years, I was not on a sea going vessel for 5!
Staff instructor (2.5 years), after school (2 years) then 1 at post always post side in Norfolk, then another year in the over haul yard!
@EMN Irons I was RO. SPU at Ballston Spa, then 691. Class 9001, or arguing 95 due to some previous reserve time and stuff...
@Conscious Flow Control Training wish i coulda gone to NY. Stuck in the devils anus thougb
@Ju M if your recruiter told you there was a 5% success rate he lied.
Love it Destin! Always teaching. It’s great to let Americans know how their military works!
Nuclear submarines are so flipping cool. You have a whole nuclear reactor gone mobile that can operate hundreds and hundreds of meters underwater by a crew keeping it under constant supervision. Amazing.
OUTSTANDING VIDEO! I am so impressed, and grateful to these incredible men and women assigned to this US Navy Nuclear Attack Submarine!!! The intelligence, committment, discpline and dedication the personnel show everyday is truly something all Americans should be extremly grateful for. It is nearly beyond comprehension what all these Navy personnel and their commanders have to deal with in such confined quarters, while on missions of incredible importance and no doubt danger. Complete love, and thanks to these brave men and women. For what it is worth you have my never ending respect and support!
THANKYOU, AND STAY SAFE!!
Oh my…the excellence…the amazing skill and dedication…the incredible ship…what an awesome sight.
No wonder this got over 5 1/2 million views. The guy boarded a nuclear sub in the Arctic, for God’s sake. Talk about going all out to send his viewers some great videos. Hard to top this one.
I love how you can see the crew relaxing the longer Destin was on board. Destin has a gift for communication.
He's basically a human golden retriever.
Slappy the accuracy in that statement
handshake "What's your name? Caleb, nice to meet you Caleb, I'm Dustin."
yeah, as someone with poori-ish social skills and anxiety and introversion and all of it, I always notice how well he talks to everyone and how nice it is, its amazing
Great video, really entertaining and informative - I am so glad I found your channel!
Thank you for this video! Never thought that the engine/tractor was such a big part of a submarine
Anothew great video! I like how you capture the division of roles on the ship. Whether you're the captain or the guy swabbing the desk, you all depend on each other to do their jobs.
That's what makes the ship work and keeps everyone safe. I love the Navy!
Good representation of the life on a Fast Attack boat even though you were kept up forward. I served as a "Steely-Eyed Missile Man" aboard a Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarine back in the mid-70's. Our mission profile back then was significantly different from our brethren in the Attack boats - both ship types are very quiet and endeavor to stay hidden in our operating area but the FBM differs in that we were the larger strategic threat to our adversaries and we stayed on patrol for much longer duration. Also, the Fast Attack missions are more free-form and they have the flexibility (as the CO said) to execute them as the situation warrants. They also get to surface the boat from time to time when it is appropriate and to visit ports. FBM's don't surface unless they are told to or in the event of a potentially disastrous casualty situation. The FBM mission cycle when I served on them was 3 months on - 3 months off. But that aside, the particulars of crew structure, qualification requirements, comradery, and professionalism were exactly the same. FBM crew members get 2 patrols to become qualified - it is pretty rare for anyone to get their quals done in 1 patrol although I missed doing it by one signature since I was the Laundry Queen on my first patrol and therefore had plenty of opportunities to move about the boat and get signatures from watch-standers - plus there was the added factor of being the guy who was washing their skivvies - you want to take care of that guy right?
BTW: The Chief's quarters are called the Goat Locker and the Captain was obviously given an open invitation to be in their space - I seriously doubt that anyone else on the boat has that sort of unrestricted access unless it might be the XO. The only thing you didn't focus on was the food - it's probably the best in the Navy. I look forward to seeing more of these videos. Brings back memories.
Other youtubers: you can't believe the prank I pulled on my girlfriend
Destin: I just boarded a freaking Nuclear submarine 😎
Well, it looks like recruitment video - military has always done that in the past, it's not surprising it has come to YT eventually. Destin was natural choice for host because of his military and scientific background. Don't think this is "spontaneous", probably took month of planning.
Its a whole other level of flex
@Mohamed Ibrahim Destin and SED have cool content.
@WeChallenge
We have procedures for when visitors are onboard. There even use to be 'family' cruises (idk if they still do them) where a few crew family members could go out for short periods.
Both types of entertainment can coexist in peace
Fantastic post! I really enjoyed this inside look with the interviews and different ranks and stations of the crew! Very Cool!
You must be so proud to be accepted into this world! Awesome, amazing video and look forward to more!
Fun fact: the US navy is actually the second largest military air force in the world… with the US Airforce being the largest.

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I'd also like to thank the US Navy Public Affairs Officers who helped coordinate this. After clearing the video for OPSEC, they did not limit my creativity in anyway whatsoever. I decided to make a video about the Command Structure on the submarine so we had a better foundation moving forward in the Submarine Deep Dive. This video is just the beginning! I have some incredible things to show you as a part of the deep dive. Please consider subscribing for those. I'm most grateful to people who go the extra mile and support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. It's a super big deal because it brings stability to Smarter Every Day in ways that's hard to describe. the term "deep dive" has never been used as a pun in a better way than it was here
