Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell - 2019-12-15
Sources and further reading: https://sites.google.com/view/sourcesoverpopulationandafrica For most of our history, the human population grew slowly. Until new discoveries brought us more food and made us live longer. In just a hundred years the human population quadrupled. This led to apocalyptic visions of an overcrowded earth. But the population growth rate actually peaked in the 1960s. Since then, fertility rates have crashed as countries industrialize and develop. World population is now expected to balance out at around 11 billion by the end of the century. But the big picture conceals the details. Let us look at one region in particular: Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2019 it was home to a billion people living in 46 countries. Although its growth rate has slowed down in the last few decades, it is still much higher than in the rest of the world. While some projections expect around 2.6 billion people others reckon with up to 5 billion by 2100. Such growth would be a huge challenge for any society. But Sub-Saharan Africa is also the poorest region on earth. So is Sub-Saharan Africa doomed? And why do the projections vary by 2.4 billion people? "without generalizing, this video would be an hour long"
hour long kurzgesagt video when
It never came
@Ian Mubangizi what never came?
@Wyeil Arbukle the one hour long vid.
where 1 hour video
The very fact this video even says afrika is over populated is not true.
As I'm living in Namibia I can say "investments" from other countries will go straight to the president and politicians' pockets, not the economy. Corruption is law here and in SA
@Wyeil Arbukle Well, that sounds awfully close to what my countrymen used to believe some 80 years ago. Greetings from Germany, my friend, lol.
@Nados Over I'm in Europe as well and our minister of defense racked up 500M in consultant fees. Definitely no corruption here.
@Ali thats the case in every country in the world.
the difference is alot of countries in Africa never had the chance or had enough time to set up anti-corruption laws.
The USA is still adding in Anti-corruption laws 250 years later.
alot of modern african countries are less than 100 years free from colonization.
Do a coup d'etat like us north Africans, it worked fine for most of us until the damn west had to intervene again, well as a Tunisian it was a surprise coup so the west didn't get to do anything (thank god)
Yep, charity and investments in the developing world like sub-Saharan Africa are very dicey.
Give money and it goes straight into the pockets of corrupt officials.
Give goods like clothes and that kills the domestic economy by making local producers completely uncompetitive.
As an African, I can relate with the huge demographic shift. Both my parents all have 7+ siblings while I only have 2
@Symixable That's not what I'm saying at all. lol. Like how some people in the comments say how many siblings their grandparents had and how many siblings they have, I'm just comparing that to the west. Nobody's saying that Africans should just have one child each. I don't care how many children people have. Because Africans might be the last race in the majority on earth by how birth rates are in other countries and continents are now.
Same but I'm Tunisian, my father have 8 siblings, my mom had 5 one died when he was a kid, yet I'm the only child from them (we were supposed to be twins but i survived and my twin died without even forming yet)
@Twig Okay, good to hear.
@B75 Now, call me uneducated but wtf is “black pigeon”?
@Hugo Daniel when you are uneducated, with no talent and make 7+ kids in arid region... having everything handed to you might seem like they are doing everything right. "Manipulated consequences" are the reason why is africa so crowded. Before people realized that education is necessary and kids don't die from simple flu... they produced too many offsprings.
mom :- 7 siblings
dad :- 8 siblings
me :- none
that's india
@Mridul Joshi brahmins always have few childs right?
@yitzhak rafaeli shekkelsteingoldmanberg European. Czech.
@A___A B___B hahaha czech is atheist country lol no wonder
@yitzhak rafaeli shekkelsteingoldmanberg i think i know people from each community with 3+ kids and with 1 child. I dont think it has anything to do with community. I always think its a personal choice.
@yitzhak rafaeli shekkelsteingoldmanberg yes
My father: 18 sibling
Me: me, a brother and a sister
welcome to Malaysia
18 Sibling?? It very rare in malaysia. Malaysian birth rate is 1.8 baby per women.. .. You from which state?
@Mamat Grandfather from Sumatera Indonesia, come to Johor, in love and marry my Grandmother there. Big family.
My mom has 7 siblings while my dad has 4, I only have 4 siblings tho - i live in Malaysia Borneo.
@Mamat In the old days kan orang banyak anak, I think the data you're using is reflecting the current birth rate. Correct me if im wrong.
same
”This video would be about 1 hour long.”
I would not mind that but the animators would probably commit not living anymore.
The comments here are mad🔥🔥
But then the kurz part of kurzgesagt would be redundant
r/wooooooosh
@Jesse Abraham Lucas If they’re given 10x the time I don’t see the problem. Is there something I don’t know about animation that makes this an issue?
@CCP-BOT69-420 huh?
Now imagine Bill Gates explaining and presenting this. How would the comments and reactions be like?
@Vineet Goswamy can you be more specific? I can't c anything at 07:35 👀
what’s ur point
@Sabih Shahid -Trump/Biden supporter
@Buster Bucket - Average Twitter user
this video was actually funded by bill gates, not a joke btw.

Coming from South Korea here, this video has a very legitimate point in my family history. My grandfather had 6 siblings, and 3 of them died before reaching adulthood. My father has 2 siblings, all of whom are alive and with children today. I am an only child, and I seem to be alive right now. Education wise, My grandfather finished only middle school, even though he was the eldest son and got more resources(none of his siblings received any education). My dad went to college, and now I am aiming for a degree. My, how times change.
"...and I seem to be alive right now", I'm laughing so hard when you said that 😂
Also Korean, and my grandparents were very poor under and after colonial Japan. My grandfather was 5'9" and he was the tallest in his area. Now that is the average height. Fortunately, they found success (by coming to US) .
@Pliar-lane Java boom Good to hear! Stay safe over there :D
And all you had to do for that progress was sell out your northern brethren and bend over for the US and their installed comprador elites. Congrats!
good luck to you.
I would love to see Ethiopia and other nations in Africa flourish the same way that South Korea did. In just a few decades, South Korea went from being one of the poorest nations on Earth to one of the wealthiest. They're on a fast track to become a world superpower. It's phenomenal to watch, and it's evidence that such rapid progress is possible in the right circumstances. I hope the right circumstances will happen for African nations, too.
Its unlikely for something so wondrous to happen in Africa due to all the corruption. Leaders in Africa only think of themselves and what they want and need not for the country's needs
@Wyeil Arbukle so you're not even african? lmao stop embarrassing yourself
@gid dy Embarass myself to who, people who are not even black.
I am of afrikan diaspora from the Caribbean, we are all afrikan, we all have the right in the say of afrika.
You likely don't even have afrikan nappy hair.
@Wyeil Arbukle Get off my mentions
you aren't even african yet you're here trying to talk bad on actual africans in africa
you're ethnicity is not african ,stop identifying as such ,you are caribbean just cause your black doesn't make you african 💀
Sadly Chinese 'loan shark' investment in Ethiopia will do more harm than good. These 'right circumstances' do not fall under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Wait so if I don’t have kids I’ll be contributing to the future of our species? Looks like I won’t be a disappointment afterwards 😎
Lol same
actually not really. in fact the opposite, as there is a sweet spot. have more than 2 or 3 and you are hurting the future of your species, but have less than 1 and you are also hurting the future of our species. the fact is that older generations are most likely retired and need funding for pensions and social security. if there are too many people being born that stresses the economy due to lack of resources and more, but if there are too little, more people are in the older groups, and there arent enough workers to supply the funds to support them, killing economic growth. if you would really like to contribute to our species in terms of workers its probably best to have 2-3 children.
@this is a good name well if i off myself than i wont be needed to be cared for when im old taps side of head
“Every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes.”
@axxdriixxan i agree there are no rich country without slaves . African countries is the a slaves of France and other western countries that why is poor and overpopulated ..
@Narata Only Africa and Mexico. In Europe 60 seconds equal two eurons.
@Radhekrishan Rathod under developed..........by who? .......
more like every 60 seconds in africa, 1000 children are born
Every 60 seconds in africa 60 people are born*
I'm from South Africa, my dad was one of 8 children, now everyone is only having one or two kids
@Dank Poster Who are these idiots that move from Europe to South Africa lol
@Ethelred Henderson 😂damn that was the funniest comment I've read in a long time. What are these made up bs statistics. Stop watching shitty right wing youtubers. White people aren't going extinct. And youtube isn't deleting your idiotic comments.
Freaking moron
Good to hear that !
Are you white, and if so were they poor? I thought it was more of a poverty thing, and my perception is that most white people that came to South Africa back in the day were more well off. No offense ofc.
@Pliar-lane Java boom you thought right. OP is white and that many siblings is unusual, but not unheard of.
mom: 6 siblings
dad: 7 siblings
me: none
I'm actually watching from Sub-Saharan Africa
Very specific.
Heeyyy.. They mentioned my country, Botswana ☺ ♥
1:22
Hello mate
Good for u... my country (philippines) almost NEVER gets mentioned by kurzgesagt.
I am from Ethiopia and within the few seconds of your mention of Ethiopia, the visuals were very accurate, the black lion statue the churches, the buildings in the background (The African Union Headquarters), the dress the lady was wearing with the traditional pattern and the smiling boy on our currency (birr) was Truly impressive. Thank you guys for doing intensive research on your amazing videos!

Wow the details, that is why I love this channel it helps me learn more about the world. Thank you :)

Being an introvert sucks already, could only imagine it when it's at 11 billion people. Need more lands to roam. I can't stand other humans 😂
It's not that serious
We can go to proxima centuri
I cant stand non afrikans in afrika
@Vincent Fez COVID-19 is useless. we need 1000x TSAR BOMBAs dropped all over the world. Only way to control overactive dicks and vaginas.
Introvert ≠ hate people
I just loved when he said: "Sub-saharan Africa doesn't need pity or gifts, but attention and fair investments..."
I was expecting my country to be mentioned (Nigeria)
Our last official census was in 206 so we can't even determine our population the increase or anything really
@Nihonium Mapping read between the lines lol
es uno de los paises con la atsa ams alta de natalidad del mundo ; tendra 400 millones de habitantes antes de acabar el siglo ;Te parece que esta aumentando?
what the fuck is nigeria
@content nuker It's a country in Africa, look it up if you wish to know more.
@content nuker I wonder how good u are at geography🤨
i just saw a documentary about how the poorest and the most marginalized indians live.... many women can speak english pretty good for people like them and a woman said that she aware having more than 2 kids will burden her. this is why i always admired how smart they are compared to other non white people

,
This explains alot why my parents have more siblings than me.
7:36 "This video was the last video in a series ..." I thought you were gonna go in more detail on a new video??
Let’s get one thing straight having a lot of children is not some kind of sin. Not properly providing for those new humans is.
There's nothing wrong with it but on average humans don't actually tend to want that many children and are just kind of forced into it
All that is being suggested is to give families and women more power to make that decision. :)
I would mostly agree but with the caveat that not having the capacity to provide for those children is an indictment of the social and political systems in which the parents are living rather than of themselves as individuals.
blaming individuals under an oppressive and corrupt government is not the answer tho
This video is one of the reasons I am currently studying political science. It is really a piece of art. Investigations into demography, politics, religion, etc. I just love it. Every time I come to watch it again, its a piece of inspiration and should make us think about ways of solving problems of our societies.
Hugs from Argentina.
i recommend reading prisoners of geography by tim marshall :)
@chickpeace Ohhh thank you! <3 I will search it
Argentina once encouraged mass immigration from Europe to help even out its population. What are your thoughts on this? Maybe African nations should do this too.
Hey Argentina, hows nazi gold
Even in some parts of Europe there was a huge demographic shift since the 50s. My father has 12 siblings. I have one sister.
In Ireland my gran mother had 16 brothers and sister
@Shane Quinn what's gre?
@Oasis Peace it was supposed to say grandmother
Try ireland on for size, I have over 200 cousins on one side of my family alone. And that’s not even really distant relations, it’s my older cousin’s children
I had a similar thing in the USA here.
Ha I'm from Bangladesh now living in Botswana 😂😂😅
How come?
@Mohammed Fahim Uddin from Bangladesh living in Botswana . That's the funniest thing I have ever heard
@Mohammed Fahim Uddin why would anyone move to african countries
@Dark Memes Botswana is better than Bangladesh.
@lif3andthings totally no
Botswana with few ppl and more desert area
Bangladesh with many ppl and different culture,religion, languages makes the Bangladesh more enjoyable
Im a Filipino. My father has 8 siblings while my mother has 4. However, I only have 1. ;)
Salamate
dear creator, i really love how respectful you are about this topic !! and also in acknowledging the shortcomings of this video but also in the effort that you made and are making to be more educated. i learned a lot from your channel (hands down my favorite on youtube haha) and the animation is always gorgeous. i look forward to see your future works!
@Wyeil Arbukle how not?
@Crota,Busty Son Of Oryx Because its not true that afrika is over populated, especially when europe are china are demand right to migrate to afrika.
Also white documentaries always talk black stuff about afrika and always out of context.
They do not give a dam, they know its controversial, they have no business on our continue they continue to exploit.
@Wyeil Arbukle “white documentaries”, “black stuff”, you can go on and over generalize everything in this video, but at least give reason to your claim, also, the channel has stated that everyone is bound to not agree so...take your pick
@n_ethano What reason, its that simple, white people believe any shit they hear on afrika.
You are just another white man justifying white documentaries like this, and you don't like to be called out on this.
I will never respect white content on afrikan issues.
@Wyeil Arbukle "just another white man" lmfaooo nice try bud
I learned something cool recently
The 1800s century of Europe
The 1900s century of The America’s
The 2000s century of Asia
The 2100s century of Africa

where are you from and what animals are left? also, look up population density
@Regimeshifts animals because they are going extinct
"Trying to bring down fertility is an intrusion to culture and tradition" I can't remember the last time I heard something so dumb. It's like saying ending slavery is wrong becouce it distrups culture. If a culture is bad it needs to change
What
"Sub saharan Africa needs attention and fair investment" - I smell new wars coming out in next few decades... Mankind is evil, it does not care about the others - its all about money and power!!!!
7:15
"Sub-Saharan Africa does not need pity or gifts, but attention and fair investment."
This is my favorite statement.
@G.G. they’re just doing what usa and ussr did in the cold war and building strong infrastructure across asia, europe and africa so they become chinas friend. The roads theyre doing also help them trade better with other countries (or move their military). Chinas not a dystopia my dad worked for china a brought many people over to England for work reasons. The people like it most of the time especially the younger generations.
There will be no fairness to do so will shift the balance of power to Afican. Fairness can only be fought for.
@Revelation13 you are the most delusional person I have read a comment on YouTube from in a very long time - and that is saying something. A group of people who never invented the wheel or built a two story brick structure before contact with Europeans are not going to take over the west. If anything we will just come back and put our fucking boots on your necks again via Colonization 2 Electric Boogaloo.
@Webb04 They were lucky because they were only a protectorate which meant greater autonomy, the tswana made up the vast majority of the country, they discovered natural resources after decolonization.
@lif3andthings This can be said of many former protectorates and they still got fucked

-easy access to the world market
-favorable loans
off course this needs to be paid and it is paid in the form of being basicaly an american colony wich serves empire interests not its people. It has one of the highest suicide rates in the world too.

Every 60 seconds in africa, a minute passes.
Together we can help stop this.
Is it true that in Africa people who have access to the clean water for one hundred years, usually have much longer lifespan?
@Igor huh?
maybe the water has malaria and they pass out right off they drink it lol
Every 60 second in africa a minute passes and a person is born
Together we can stop this
I bet you’re a God fearing American who cares deeply about Africans.

I'd gladly watch an hour-long video by Kurzgesagt!!!
Yes, this was going to be a sensitive topic no matter what. I'm from Kenya and in a nutshell, agree with everything said.
I understand the need to generalise and give approximates because honestly not even an hour is enough time to get through all the specifics.
Objectively speaking, there shouldn't be any outrage towards this video of any kind. This video was a starting point to a conversation we (for those it concerns and would like to make it their concern) should be having.
Great job.
@Comfie K yea buts its mostly a problem in 3trd world countries which africa is mainly made out of
@bunderbah what?? Yo chill
@SonOfThaSoil _ That was not the intent of the video .
Immigration is a huge issue in Europe , I’m black from Gabon and it is a fact .
People wouldn’t risk their lives to cross the sea if they had a comfortable life in their nation .
If has nothing to do with racism , it’s pure logic .
@SonOfThaSoil _ genocide is what can happen due to famine caused by overpopulation. Is that what you would like for ur children you sadist
@B 1K you are braindead.
I award this 'most f**king interesting YouTube video of the year.'
Seriously.
The situation in Bangladesh is what Ireland went through aswell.
My great grandparents had like 11 kids my grandparents had 5 kids my parents had 3 kids and my cousin had 2 kids
I will help the earth by being single after all
"Africa has ongoing problems from the multiculturalism and ethnic diversity drawn arbitrarily during colonial rule."
"DON'T PULL BACK THE CURTAIN NO STOP IT."
What’s that supposed to mean lmao. If you think the west is guilty for Africa your dead wrong. It’s simply up to us to help or to not.
@Anonymous Giraff I meant they already hated each other and will continue doing it by themselves. Blaming it on white people is a total cop-out.
