This preparation is a variation of Thiele's method to produce 5-Aminotetrazole. the production of 5-ATZ was achieved by the reaction of the aminoguanidine salt with a diazotization agent in this case NaNO2/HCl to form the corresponding guanylazide salt, which is then cyclized to 5-ATZ with the use of a base. I used Ammonia but sodium carbonate will also work . high temperature is applied to induce refluxing of the solution. before cooling the solution the PH is adjusted, to provide the optimal conditions to precipitate the 5-ATZ. We recrystallized this from hot water to yield a pure crop of yellowish coloured 5-ATZ crystals. FYI, turns out you can buy 5-ATZ from Amazon. Just received 200g:) Though It was pretty easy to make the 5-ATZ from the aminoguanidine Bicarb.
Yeah I can’t access amazon from my country. Trust me. I really looked for 5-ATZ and would have bought it if I could. As for recrystallised NaNTZ I used acetone. It’s far too soluble in H2O to affect decent recovery from solution. And storage is in plastic specimen containers.
I bought 200g as well. A bit expensive but well worth it just to avoid having to make the calcium cyanamide.
when you doing reflux apply heat and is stirr also or not ???

soon enough! i did try once but the NaNTZ i used was not of high enough purity and i need to make more. plenty of raw materials just finding the time for the synthesis. very shortly i will have a prep for guanidine nitrate and nitroguanidine. it is filmed but need to edit-
