What I find amazing is how many different plants evolved basically this mechanism. There's some up here called jewelweed that does the same thing. It's a really pretty plant, but walking near a bush of it is weird when it's full of seed cause a whole bush will just kinda explode seeds everywhere if you bump into it. There's similar spring mechanisms in a few other plants as well I think. There's a type of tree with exploding seed pods that are really spikey if memory serves.
Yeah I've always called them a touch-me-not. But I remember loving touching them as a kid and when I finally figured out how they worked I was blown away. This video just came up on my feed and the first thing I thought of was oh it's like a touch-me-not
There's a kind of cactus called the Cholla that shoots out spikes when there is a disturbance near it. I dont know if this is the same kind of mechanism but its still pretty similar.

Edit: this applies to all faith based religions. For example, Buddhism is less about gods and more about mentality and spirituality. And how one could reach nirvana if they reach a balanced state of understanding. The practice of magick in a spiritual sense also exists and doesnt even require you believe in a god.
Point is, i think its sad that you feel you need to convert people to your religion. You are not a missionary.

There's even error correction for copying. It is an assortment of protein based molecular machines that carry out these tasks. Each constructed using amino acid chains arranged is precise order as to create the proper protein. You must have a functioning system of these precisely construction machines to even have a random mutation take effect.

Derek told me to watch your videos years ago, glad I finally did. This one is perfect too, a real gem. I really felt like I was along for the ride! When I was a kid we had a creek in the back yard and there were these tall, green plants with orange flowers and giant exploding seed pods that grew from its banks, really fascinated me as a kid. I'm going to look up what they are, not how they work
I remember when I was a kid my friends and I would look for these plants that had these dark looking pods that would explode when exposed to moisture and we would collect handfuls of it to throw in water to watch it explode and sometimes it would explode in our hands because of the sweat. Some kids would put it in their mouth and let it explode inside their mouths. It’s amazing to see how these plants evolve in creative ways.
Thank you for doing this experiment. I moved to a new place last year and, this spring while trying to get the weeds out of the grass, ran into this plant. I didn't want to spread the seeds from all of the weeds in the grass so, very logically, cut the stems on which the seed pods were developing and moved them to a bucket. It worked for dandelions and other seed producers but this plant had me baffled. I finally brought out a powerful vacuum and vacuumed the seeds as they popped out. I'm still not convinced that I got a good percentage of them. Just touching the stalk triggers the whipping of the seeds - often in my face.
How did I miss this one. This one has to be my favorite of your endeavors. There’s two weeks of follow up lessons I could teach my kids on this video alone. Angular momentum, agriculture, chaos theory, and downright silliness with the banana slap bracelet. Thanks!

I haven't looked it up, so I might be wrong but I'm basing this guess on the video itself. The "slap bracelet" itself works because it has two stable geometric states: rolled and straight. The problem is that the straight form is BARELY stable and any change to its geometry causes the whole thing to release the stored "spring" energy held within the bent metal/plant matter and curl up. The next question is how does the plant itself work. I don't think it needs anything more than a weak biological "glue." The "spring" of the plant while growing would be soft and flexible (no need for a strong adhesive at this stage), but once the tips start to dry out (like leaves in Fall when the plant stops feeding them) they become the rigid geometric springs we see. It's also possible that the binding agent loses its adhesive properties as it dries letting the plant time when the spring is fully prepped for launch. Another possibility is that many materials shrink slightly as they dry out. This could provide another method for storing energy in the plant springs by having the fibers within the leaf dry out, shrink, and begin pulling on the shape of the leaf leaving it in the "barely stable" state we see.
Or there's another mechanism or five I'm missing. Biology can be really weird.

Great info! I've been aware of flowers whose seedpods explode and just the other day I experienced this. It was a Johnny-jump-up seed pod and I thought great I will pick it off the next day to save the seeds, but by the next day it had already exploded and I had no idea where the seeds had gone! California poppies do this too.
This is fascinating! Also I have that particular weed all over my yard, and I absolutely hate it. By the time you realize it's growing it's already too late...exploding seed pods everywhere. 🤬
Red clover does a similar thing, but the pods look like tiny okra. Maybe they do the same banana slap bracelet thing, but it seems like they just randomly explode.

I watched this with my family. As you were talking about this grass, I thought, "that looks like a brassicas seed pod." Once I looked up the scientific name, and saw that it was hairy bittercress, I was happy to confirm that yup, it was. Hairy bittercress is in the same plant family as broccoli, radish, cauliflower, cabbage, stock, and many others. The other brassicas don't have the explosive nature, but if you want to see larger seed pods that look similar, let your kale flower and you'll be able to compare. Happy observing!

I love that you get so excited over some thing that drives me crazy every spring I go out in my yard and try and pick these suckers before they’re dry enough to explode they will take over a patch very fast if not kept under control so during the spring I go out every day and pick as many as I can

I can't prove it, but I'm feeling pretty good about myself for guessing exactly how these work; that doesn't happen to me often. Didn't strike me as the kind of plant to store enough energy for a proper explosion, but most of the plants that I'm familiar with are quite springy. Plants aren't known for growing complex mechanisms, so in my mind it had to be nothing more than a sticky spring with seeds on it, kept under tension by staying loosely fused to the tassels. I'm curious to see the lifecycle; does the spring's connection to the tassels get thinner as the seeds grow, protecting them until they're ready to be ejected? At full maturity, will the spring rip off on its own without any nudging? I'm gonna have to look into this now...

The energy you have about this grass is the same energy I had when I found it. I laughed and giggled like a child.
This grass has always fascinated me. It's on my property and as I groom the grass or weed whack I see and feel these seeds hitting my legs. I'm so happy you caught it on those cameras! Thank you. Your enthusiasm is definitely condoned considering my own curiosity about this grass.
Sourgrass also has really cool exploding seeds. When the seeds in the little "pod" are mature, the skin on it will grow soft and warty, and seeds will spin out in a satisfying way when it is touched.
Exploding seed dispersal happens in a few plants. Some molds do it with spore too. Watching how it happens in slowmo is always very interesting.

This actually HELPED me with my pasture grass problems!
We were having a LOT of weed problems, even on heavily grazed areas...
After seeing this, I went out and took a course broom/brush to my seed headed grass, and now 95% (by sq ft)
Is FREE from weeds, and has Dense Lush pasture grass!
I have seen this in many forms with Australian native plants (I am a professional seed collector), and I see banana peal slap bracelet (it seems to be less common, but some of the banana peals can go either way depending on which end 'fails' first), I also see slap corkscrew quite commonly and sphere implosion on a few. I think that there is a structure within the seed pod that creates tension in the pod walls as it dries, and eventually the tension gets to the point where the pod 'seam' fails and the tension is violently released throwing the seeds clear of the parent plant.

How is this "sticking" accomplished? A geneticists might be able to isolate a gene/genes that could shed further light on it.
