Make Sodium Silicate (AKA "Water Glass") from Cat Litter and Drain Opener

NurdRage - 2018-08-05

In this video we use cat litter and drain opener to make sodium silicate. This will be a valuable precursor to other silicon based chemicals in the future.

Most cat litter is made from clay but "crystal" cat litter or "silica" cat litter is made from silica gel. Silica gel is amorphous silicon dioxide made by aqueous chemistry is very easy to convert into other silicon compounds.

The process is quite straightforward: 60g of silica gel based cat litter is mixed with 100mL of water. Then 80g of sodium hydroxide is slowly added to dissolve the silica gel. What's produced is a solution of sodium silicate.

What makes you say that?!?

Isawa De La Pradera - 2018-08-12

BasicallyPlays My guess is his brain

Luficarius Ratspeed - 2019-06-16

Is is a wizard.. a WIZARD GIANT... thundercracks

robin robinrobin ledford - 2019-08-16

Ty you made me laugh

Skultera - 2019-02-26

'Warning: Gloves are corrosive, wear NaOH when handling them."

Soumalya Pramanik - 2019-05-10

Horrible joke but still made me laugh like a madman

Lena A - 2019-07-29

@Soumalya Pramanik me too! :D

Micke J - 2019-08-22

Hysterical :D

NurdRage - 2018-08-05

Just a fixed version of a video i released in may. There is nothing new here if you've already seen it.

NurdRage - 2018-08-05

yes, since this video had just minor fixes, i felt it would be spammy to notify of something already seen.

Matt Tuck - 2018-08-07

That explains it! I had it saved when it disappeared. But uh, so if I do a run with just the blue ones, will the end product look different?

zodiacmx - 2018-08-18

VIdeo of dmt?

YoungBoredom - 2018-10-06

Why do you keep unlisting and relisting? I made a java based .exe to check if my favorite youtubers have uploaded and you keep giving it false positives lol

YoungBoredom - 2018-10-08

STOP UNLISTING AND RELISTING REEEEEEEEEE

Pavel Z.P. - 2018-08-06

6:44 Poor fly... :D

marshalllhiepler - 2019-11-26

Don't fret over it.
I actually knew that fly.
He was diagnosed with terminal wing cancer.
I'd hate to think that he intentionally committed suicide, but I'd understand if he did.
At least his wife, and 487 children will receive the insurance money.

mordoc333 - 2018-08-27

Can you make adhesive-related series? Maybe make your own super-glue?

Harrow Guy - 2018-08-05

not seeing this in subs feed :(

Kaiser Andrenius - 2018-08-05

Harrow Guy me neither...

ColtaineCrows - 2018-08-05

"NurdRage1 hour ago

It wasn't intended to be pushed to subscription boxes apparently.

EDIT: Formatting fail.

Syltibob - 2018-08-11

Harrow Guy same here, but I got the notification on my phone.. 😊👍🏻

Robert Rodgers - 2018-11-18

Outstanding information! Thank You for sharing this.

James Morriss - 2019-07-13

I had seen several "how to" on this but now I feel better having seen your video. You know "a real professional chemist" type guy.

robin robinrobin ledford - 2019-08-16

Lol

UDtheAesir - 2018-08-06

I liked the strong recommendation for purity! For amateur chemistry, would it be possible to make table salt from your sodium metal and chlorine gas if you have it? That would make for an interesting video.

Piero Leon - 2019-03-01

Hello, many thanks! Great video, i have a question, can i apply this to a car exterior?

M Wing - 2019-04-16

Thanks for the info! Could you dip a wax figurine into the final solution and let it dry and then remove the wax, leaving a perfect replica? :O)

Paul Coombe - 2020-01-29

To make a lost wax mould, start with model , mix foundry sand with solution until its dry wet mix, ( no solution oozing, put model in square metal box with no bottom or top place on board apply the sand ,and gently ram compact sand around it, level of sand at the top of box place board over top ( board must have holes drill in it to let wax out) clamp together round over the box ,place in oven at about 180 to 200 approx 1to 2 hours to cook sand and melt wax out , take out roll over remove both top and bottom boards , and fill with molten metal

THErcbomber - 2018-08-05

This was in my recommended videos on the home page but not in my sub box. almost skipped over it until i saw uploaded 5hrs ago

proud2deviate - 2018-10-30

Thanks for including the proper ratios for a refractory mix. 'Bout drove myself nuts trying to find a reliable reference, a while back.

Robert G - 2020-03-16

Hmm, I wonder if it could be thinned and used to seal wood outdoors?

Ivan Bombana - 2019-04-30

Did you make one of the reaction at minute 4:05?

James Fisher - 2019-04-03

Do you remove the "presents" left by the cat first?

marshalllhiepler - 2019-11-26

Don't be silly.
That process is covered in the previous "Home Cooking" video.

Overengineering - 2018-08-05

Wasn´t in my feed.

Billy Jones - 2019-03-25

Sodium Silicate, aka Water Glass is available at Lowes, Home Depot, and other big box retailers as it is used to seal concrete.

tyler roberts - 2019-04-03

my lowes didn't have it

Billy Jones - 2019-04-03

@tyler roberts Bummer! You might have to order it.

tyler roberts - 2019-04-03

@Billy Jones I meant ace, I done have a lowes, I found enough silica to get it done

NTF74868 - 2019-10-16

I've heard that the pre-made stuff is REALLY expensive compared to making it yourself...

Sandeep Kumar - 2019-12-21

Can you tell me where is water glass liquid is used. Can I use water glass liquid on metal sheets and on plastic material.

E.H. Lipton - 2019-03-26

Excellent job young man. It does take patience though, a rare commodity

Robin Thrill3r - 2019-04-01

Yo Rage I need ya help buddy!
Please lemme know if you can do a request video!
Post one on the Fluoridation process of CH3CL2OP. (Methylphosponly dichloride)

Steve Schaut - 2018-09-03

I’ve made several gallons like this, so...yeah, it DOES work!

Daniel Aplet - 2020-01-01

I used sodium silicate once when I was a child to grow Crystal Gardens, it fascinated me as a child but now that I am not not so much

Robert Silkovsky - 2019-01-06

Greetings! how can we obtain Solid Sodium Meta silicate? Thanks.

Stephen Jacks - 2020-02-20

FYI there was a cool article on reacting waterglass with vinegar to make colloidal silica gel which when layered and dried gives synthetic fire opal.

aga - 2018-08-08

Nice ! Excellent demo. Core sand springs to mind ;)

S Larson - 2018-08-05

Not on the sub feed

nunya bisnass - 2020-02-02

The cat litter gel probably has a higher surface area allowing it to react faster.

ryan abcdefg - 2018-09-01

wow, great video! any idea what the shelf life is like?

k192447 - 2020-01-29

nossa demais este video, grato pelo seu tempo e dedicação.

Unmannedair - 2018-08-08

I did this. Thanks NR for the idea. I'm making custom firebrick.

NTF74868 - 2019-10-16

How well did that prevent cracking? Did you just paint it onto regular bricks; or, did you make the bricks, as well? If the later, did you add this into the mix; or, put it on after they cured?

butsukete - 2018-08-08

Thanks for adding the comments about refractory usage.

catmandont100 - 2019-03-22

You have a great channel.

erik61801 - 2018-08-06

cool i just made some of this to fix my 100 year old basement walls.

XofHope - 2019-04-15

If you don't mind me asking, but how does that work? How do you apply it? Do you have to add something else to make it bond? My main reason for asking is that mine never solidified and I know there's definitely something I'm missing.

Fusion Developer - 2018-10-14

I would think that used kitty litter may have impurities.

soap - 2020-03-25

Lol

UsernameNotDefined - 2019-08-26

This is the same stuff the U.S. used to waste engines in the C.A.R.S. program of 2009.

Gary Preece - 2018-10-14

What can be used as a carrier solvent to apply thin layers to paint work and also can this mix be blended in to carnuba and bees wax

screamingwilson - 2018-11-17

When using it as an adhesive, once all the water has been driven off and it becomes solid, is it soluble in water?

heyou - 2019-02-26

I think it would be epic if you were able to make a silicon wafer, and make a 'macro' chip!

Bruce Clothier - 2020-02-16

Nice video, so many thanks, but I have to say it is spoiled by your muffled diction. You dont speak clearly and it's hard to follow. Sorry. Otherwise exemplary useful stuff

Omar Fayez - 2019-03-03

How can we make (cat litter) silica gel?

Recon_GamingYT - 2019-05-12

Its cat litter mate, its like $7...

Kevinakevinakevina - 2019-01-31

anyone know the concentration of this?

Samir Attaf - 2019-02-17

Dear NurdRage, how to make potassium silicate, concentration 28% to 35%

htomerif - 2018-08-07

So.. if you dehydrate it with sulfuric acid, what happens?

Leviathan's Nemesis - 2018-08-06

Hi, I did this a year ago but made the mistake of heating in a aluminium pan, still worked but had a black tinge throughout. The sodium Hydroxide reacts with aluminium, my bad.

David-Paul Newton-Scott - 2019-10-26

I am interested in preserving wood with this stuff.

Paul Coombe - 2020-01-29

Very good for fire retardant solution must be heat dry or co2 gassed,

Chantz temming - 2019-02-18

Please make non soluble glass this way!

Omar Ali - 2018-08-05

This video wasn't in my feed, I even had the notification bell on and I still didn't receive the notifaction.

D un - 2018-08-15

nurdrage, can you make colloidal silica, 10-20 nm and 30% solution. I would be tempted to pay...

Samir Attaf - 2019-02-01

dear Mr: how to make potassium silicate ?
