In this video, I prepare Benzyl Chloride, an Aryl Halide. The procedure I am doing is a simple acid chlorination of the aromatic alcohol Benzyl Alcohol. This compound can be used to prepare a Grignard Reagent, it can be cross coupled with acrylates, thus it can be used as an arylating agent. Another interesting reaction which I just found out about after completing this video is The Sommelet Reaction. This reaction yeilds Benzaldehyde in what's described as "good yeilds" whatever that means. Caviat Emptor I'm sure. This reaction has become general for the preparation of aromatic aldehydes. What concentration of hcl did you used ? Depending of clear colour i guess it is 35 % p.a. ?
Dominik Ďurčo yes you’re correct it’s technical grade acid from the hardware store which is around 35%.

Can I also produce benzyl bromide? That I would use hydrobromic acid instead of hydrogen chloride? But I do not know whether to use too much acid...

I ve read you can make Acetylchlorid or acetic Acid Anhydrid with the Benzyl Chloride have you tryd it? But i m not sure if you net benzyltrichloride for it.

Quenching with methanol instead of water and then dropping in sodium borohydride would be more practical. The methyl group just increases lipophilicity. I've been prescribed both compounds (Desoxyn and Adderall) and at least orally their effects are identical, just a difference in dosage. I would steer clear of that though. I've had my place raided 4 times now just from the suspicion generated by possession of chemical equipment in and of itself. Just get a script.
@Full Modern Alchemist This benzyl chloride probably still contains a lot of benzyl alcohol even after distillation and is not good enough for Grignard reaction. Did you check the conversion and final purity of it by GC?

@Full Modern Alchemist They make a pretty inert antidote for cyanide now that you should be able to get a script for, its essentially just a special form of B12. Remember you can also get nitriles by dehydrating amides with thionyl chloride or phosphorus pentoxide.
@David Reed Thanks for the tips! I do know of the thionyl chloride and phosphorus pentoxide route, but I currently have neither in the lab. I figured if I could make a synth of acetonitrile work with more pedestrian reagents it could be really useful to the amateur. Currently I'm following an old patent:

@Full Modern Alchemist I know a chem manufacturer that will sell those types of reagents to amateurs if you need a reference. Thionyl chloride can be made fairly easily however: 1.) Sulfur dichloride via the action of chlorine gas on sulfur (HCL on bleach to generate Cl2), then 2.) dehydrate sodium bisulfate to sodium pyrosulfate via heat and finally 3.) decompose sodium pyrosulfate under heat to sulfur trioxide and sodium sulfate, the sulfur trioxide is either bubbled through the SCl2 or passed over it, can't remember off the top of my head. Anhydrous conditions are needed.
@Full Modern Alchemist Isn't Benzyl Cyanide in the same illigel class as Phenyl Acetone?
@sweetpurplegurl it varies from state to state in the USA, but the DEA classifies some chemicals as scheduled precursors which require record keeping and licensing if you sell them commercially. This is not the same thing as a scheduled controlled substance however, possession alone is not necessarily a crime with chemicals on that list. Keep in mind that this is not legal advice though and it’s probably a bad idea to have things like phenylacetone unless you have a very good reason to anyway.
