Nitric Acid From Thin Air

Cody'sLab - 2015-08-10

I make Nitric acid out of air, water, and electricity.

Facebook fan page: https://www.facebook.com/codydonreeder

Weston Horner - 2018-11-06

"How strong is this acid?" About 45 pinch's.

DuggiBoi - 2020-01-02

Lmao

Doctor Purple - 2020-01-14

That's hella strong acid

Aquarium Guy - 2015-08-10

What I learned from Cody: It doesn't matter the amount produced, it matters about the success of the project.

Keith Brain - 2017-08-18

Birkeland–Eyde process perhaps (not the Haber process as missing pressure, temperature, catalyst, H2, ...)

mmmhorsesteaks - 2017-08-27

The Stoned Videogame Nerd haber-bosch makes ammonia; he's making nitric/nitrous acids.

w0lvez1 - 2018-11-23

@Awareqwx Diamond Possible only if your near a very stinky public toilet without water. It's all fake.. 🚾

Ryjelsum - 2019-01-15

Exactly; efficiency can be puzzled out later, but knowing that the reaction works is a huge first step. If you're more chemistry minded and want to watch some in depth research, look up NurdRage's series on producing sodium via alcohol catalyzed magnesium reduction of sodium hydroxide. His first reaction only made about 40-60% yield and destroyed a flask from the hot sodium hydroxide, but he gradually narrowed down all the problems until he had a reaction that produced ~95% yields of sodium based on sodium hydroxide that did not destroy a flask each time it was done, and found very obtainable alcohols that can be used for the reaction. Now, we know that all you need to make sodium metal in your own home is a hotplate, a flask, magnesium turnings, sodium hydroxide, and a small amount of menthol or certain other alcohols. It's really an interesting look into thorough research

mrdojob - 2019-06-09

5kg of nitric acid over a year is nothing to be sniffed at. with two or so of them gonig it might actually make more than anyone would ever need.

Salty Viper - 2016-06-14

1.21 jigawatts!

Coffeyville Science Girl - 2018-10-04

Christoopher Lloyd only pronounced it that way because it was misspelled in the script. However, the pronunciation is valid, just not as common as the hard G sound.

JasonVladimir - 2018-11-10

GO FOR IT MARTY!

MrJebus015 - 2019-06-19

If Cody was black, it would have been 2 billion niggawatts

Trumpsney Productions Studios - 2019-10-04

Salty Viper
Thank you.

NihilisticEntropy - 2020-06-07

1.3 niggawatts

Giga - 2016-06-06

Can I also do this with thick air?

Lil Banz - 2019-01-26

Just take longer

Lil Banz - 2019-01-26

Lol

Zastrus - 2019-02-26

heavy air

S C - 2019-09-12

What about phat air ?

I gRape Babies - 2020-05-27

No. Tell that air to lose some weight.

The Usurper - 2015-09-10

This guy probly on so many watch lists, they haven't even named them yet

James Dabrowski - 2015-12-31

+Cody'sLab Most likely.Β  Cody doesn't come across as a threatening, simply educational and scientific.Β  Idiots exists everywhere and blocking this dude's videos wouldn't stop idiots from being idiots.

angela iheanacho - 2020-01-31

And he should

Luis Beaucage - 2016-12-19

Hey Cody, are you ever thinking of revisiting this project? Like make it more efficient or such

Dr. K - 2020-08-02

Yes

Captain Video - 2016-04-14

Observation: His work surface appears to be a homemade version of a child's toy stove.

fsmoura - 2016-05-16

No time to comb hair. Doing science!

Blz Ahz - 2017-05-15

I think the hair adds lab cred.

Werner Hiemer - 2018-08-12

It's just to have evidence of thin air. Thick air would be so humid that his hair gets down by itself. Well maybe he had touched those tubes will they were life or just to reference the static electricity in that arc.

Nathaniel - 2016-05-25

So Cody CAN make anything from anything. The sun, air, and water is all he needs to dissolve your money.

Keven Jones - 2016-07-17

The aquarium airstones have to be pre-treated before they will function properly. Soak them in tap water for approximately 30min - 1hr and they should bubble just fine, even with a low pressure pump! Awesome stuff here, keep it up Cody. I hope this piece of advice helps with your future experiments; I've noticed you do a lot of diffusion to recover chemicals, and using a bubbling stone would be quite effective for that purpose since it would allow for more contact time/contact surfaces.

Mark Selten - 2019-04-15

Wouldn't the acid eat the stone?

Humbulla93 - 2019-11-13

@Mark Selten depends on the stone if it has any carbonates in it the acid will consume it. if the stone is made of silicone dioxide nothing would happen

Mark Selten - 2019-11-13

@Humbulla93 so like a quartz stone.. good to know, I am going to try recover ultra fine gold from a quartz crush. Mechanical separation is impossible, it's far too fine.

Mr Danker - 2016-07-13

Pee in it and you get urea nitrate, an explosive.

DagasNeedle - 2016-07-17

He would have to refine the urea to get any serious yeilds

Mr Danker - 2016-07-17

@DagasNeedle or find a way to keep reusing the same acid

Jack - 2019-09-01

Or attach it to a sewage works (with a refining process before mixing )

Blue jazz - 2016-06-08

You know Cody is kind of like the modern-day alchemist with his knowledge of chemistry. He literally would blow some King's mind with his abilities if you were let loose in the past.

steve green - 2016-10-18

if its Cody's white bag then it would be testicles

methylene5 - 2018-09-13

And this...is my BOOM STICK!

Wei Zhao - 2018-10-27

kings and queens back then were taught things that common folk were not taught @Racko

Just a person - 2019-04-23

Eldon Janzen - 2020-08-16

And put some hydrochloric acid with nitric acid will dissolve gold. That would impress the king.

Brandon Lisik - 2015-10-18

Dude, fume hood or outside. We'd all like to see more vids from you.

louis tournas - 2018-04-21

+Brandon Lisik:
The NO2 is inside the glass dome. It should be fine.

w0lvez1 - 2018-11-23

More FAKE Videos from this Fish Tank Bubbler SALESMAN? More possible using ammonia. Just buy NOS then dissolve it in water.

Andrew Villalobos - 2020-07-15

@louis tournas NO2 isn't very soluble in water so a lot was actually escaping. I was worried about it too. This acute exposure wasn't horrible but had he left it going as a long term project to make lots of acid over months, the NO2 would either kill him from the exposure or cause other health effects like asthma and lots of other respiratory problems. NO2 really is not my gig.

Andrew Villalobos - 2020-07-15

@w0lvez1 ?

louis tournas - 2020-07-15

@w0lvez1
"Just buy NOS then dissolve it in water."

Birkeland-Eyde Process?

Rob Mckennie - 2015-08-10

Must be one of my favourite channels on youtube, was just thinking earlier today how I can't wait to see more ball-mill videos! It needs to be somehow arranged that Cody is paid to do this so that he can spend more time doing cool stuff!

Lupusk9 Entertainment - 2015-08-12

@Rob Mckennie maybe he could use patreon

valindro zanthros - 2016-01-03

youtubers do get paid by the views and adds

Rob Mckennie - 2016-01-03

@valindro zanthros but a channel his size doesn't exactly produce a living wage, in the state that it's on he's never going to be putting food on the table with it. Maybe one day, but I want him paid now

Nice Back to the Future reference. :)

Nonya Damnbusiness - 2017-07-15

Excellent video. I'm wondering about your penny test. The copper is alloyed with 5% zinc and if it was made after 1982 it's a thin plating of copper alloy over a zinc core. Soft copper tubing is almost pure copper. I wonder how the zinc affects the reaction. Also, using sodium nitrate as a fertilizer is a big no-no. Sodium build-up in the soil is toxic to plants.

Henry Jiang - 2018-03-17

Nonya Damnbusiness small amounts should be fine. In larger quantities, it’s used commonly as stump remover.

rigor mortis - 2018-10-30

@Henry Jiang non the less its not a fertilizer and Na salts shouldnt be used. Dont make me even start about how much NO3 going to be decompose to usable nitrogen from plants :D

Heads Mess - 2019-10-14

fine then. use potassium carbonate instead.

Edouard Bracame - 2016-06-13

Sooo, if i'm right, if you run this device (let's say) one week, you will have a stronger acid ?

Cody'sLab - 2016-06-13

yes

Edouard Bracame - 2016-06-13

+Cody'sLab Thank you for the answer :)

Bambataa - 2016-06-17

He can also make a lifetime supply of acid if you know what I mean.

Emily Sheffer - 2016-07-08

Lol I think that's how he literally took it.

Cheyne Simons - 2016-05-26

Hey Cody, that smoke detector would work better if you put some batteries in it.....3:15

Domino52o - 2018-01-30

Smoke detectors don't have a constant on light

Henry Jiang - 2018-03-17

Domino52o It’s Cody, you’d never know.

w0ttheh3ll - 2018-09-10

and put it up under the ceiling where the smoke will collect...

Clyde Wary - 2015-11-27

This is pretty much is the same as the Ostwald process for making HNO3. However, it should be pointed out that NO2 is a "mixed" anhydride. When reacted with H2O, it produces an equimolar mixture of HNO3 & HNO2. This solution is then treated by having air bubbled through it. The O2 oxidizes the HNO2 to HNO3. The result is then distilled to make 67% HNO3. Hey folks, read some chemistry books!

louis tournas - 2015-12-29

This is the birkland-eyed process.

CoolKoon - 2016-05-13

+Clyde Wary Nobody said that it isn't.

Liu Wai Ching - 2016-05-23

So sir you mean that the Cody should bubble air into the resulting acid solution?

Arsenic Bromide - 2017-03-26

First of all his Voltage is in excess by couple of thousands which really do nothing in being responsable for reacting the gases. MicroWave transformer is doing the same job at 2000 volts. Second of all his Current is so low that he should be the Ant Man while at Ant size to be able of being satisfied with that spit in the bottle. Note that the starting Voltage for breaking the Nitrogen and Oxygen bonds is below 2100. However the higher Current and the higher flow of Air are only responsable for high quantity at short time production of these NO2 and NO gases ;)

Heads Mess - 2019-10-14

damn. i was going to try this to make ozone to make H2O2. i guess i go back to my original idea on the matter... use pure oxygen instead.

its not the quantity, its the success that counts.

3dpumpkin - 2019-09-23

Could you improve this with two additions of a catalyst(platinum wirer mesh?) And then increasing the atmosphere pressure psi. If you could re do this experiment with those two changes. Oh couldn't you distill it into fumic nitric acid instead of desolving in water?

Chris Caglayan - 2016-12-02

Thank you very much for this video! I`ve never heard of this method before and it really intrigues me, so I`ll have to try it out soon:) Maybe I will be able to make silver nitrate.....
