Preparing a Drying Agent (Magnesium sulfate)

NileRed - 2015-11-11

Hello guys!

I FORGOT TO ADD. ALWAYS USE UNSCENTED SALTS!!

Today we will be preparing some magnesium sulfate drying agent. Its preparation is very similar to how others are prepared and we are just going to use it as an example.

I know you are in canada from the supplies you always have, eastern ontario or quebec?

Daniel McCarthy - 2015-11-16

Cool Vid! I've been playing with calcium chloride to keep my stocks dry, and its super hygroscopic. You just have to pay attention to compatibility. On the side, has anyone experimented with dissolving Viton??? (It's a fluoroestomer used in a lot of gaskets and o-rings).

pyro2525 - 2015-11-12

@ 38s, that is the cutest little filter flask ever :P

Also, can't wait to see your new videos man :)

NileRed - 2015-11-12

+pyro2525 I am working on editing them. I am just super slow!!

some dude - 2015-11-12

so what did the magnesium sulfate reduce to when you got it to hot?

Cody'sLab - 2015-11-17

+josef williams
Roasting of sulfide ore to obtain SO2 and then reacting with a catalyst to form SO3 and then adding to water.

John Doe - 2015-11-18

+Cody'sLab Yep... I confused this with the method of making nitric acid... By mixing sulfuric acid with a nitrate salt then distilling at high temperature.

RealChemistry - 2015-11-21

+Nile Red Why you bought so much of this salt??? I never used it in my syntesis... cause CaCl2 in my opinion is better... please dont trash your money

NileRed - 2015-11-21

+RealChemistry CaCl2 is my preferred drying agent, but it cant be used with amines or alcohols. Also, you can't really buy less than 1Kg. It costs like $5 anyway, so it isn't really an issue.

Richard Smith - 2016-04-20

+RealChemistry Epsom salt is CHEAP. If anything, its just poor mans desiccant. It does the job for speeding up the drying of floors and walls, and is cheaper than the products meant for that purpose, and most people have epsom salt in the house anyway, so it's useful information to know.

Phil Becker - 2015-11-12

Thank you for adding the "Currently editing" thingy again! :)

doloinc - 2015-11-12

Yo nile,

Would this work for ammunition storage?

NileRed - 2015-11-12

+doloinc You mean to just keep it dry?

doloinc - 2015-11-12

+Nile Red yup, prevent excess moisture buildup

NileRed - 2015-11-12

I think it would work. Just make a homemade dessicator and store your ammo inside.

Josh Zimmerman - 2015-11-12

+doloinc I store my ammo with those desiccant packages that come with computers/clothing. Just keep it in a sealed container (like an ammo can) and you shouldn't need to worry about making your own drying agent/desiccant; there won't be much moisture to begin with, and what little there is isn't enough to harm the powder or primer.

doloinc - 2015-11-12

@Josh Zimmerman - That's what I do, but looking for options to create my own desiccant in the event that the normal ones won't be available.

waffielz - 2015-11-14

Can you make glow in the dark stuff? It would be cool to see :3

Chris Anderson - 2019-10-04

i just dry it at 400 when it clumps i hit it with a hammer then blend it

Rodrygo Nunes - 2015-11-12

i dunno why but i feel great watching your videos plus it helps me a lot with the biomed school

smellycat249 - 2015-11-12

you rock. thanks for all the info

trustthewater - 2015-11-12

Wish I had seen this video back when I first tried to dry magnesium sulfate. Ruined a couple of my mom's baking trays :(

NileRed - 2015-11-12

+trustthewater haha, we have all be there

bain5872 - 2015-11-12

I'm a recent subscriber and I wanted to let you know that I truly enjoy your videos. They are very well done. Informative with great production values. Thank you sharing your knowledge and doing it well.

NileRed - 2015-11-12

+bain5872 I am glad you enjoy them!

Jay Hall - 2020-05-05

Huh and I been using a blowtorch this whole time

I Love Birds of Prey n Chemistry - 2015-11-14

Can I use microwave instead?

Bake Chuck - 2020-02-04

Gezz had a huge discussion with the ppl I live with in my house. Should I be worried about toxic gases exiting my oven ? I first baked it between 200-250 celsius

Gozitan montain bike go pro rides - 2015-11-16

quick question where do you get all of the glassware and the chemicals

NileRed - 2015-11-16

+dkingslayer 2003 The internet! It is a glorious place.

Gozitan montain bike go pro rides - 2015-11-17

thanks dude your videos are very well and i thank you for a 13 year old boy you really helped me understand chemistry

NileRed - 2015-11-17

No problem. I am very happy that i was able to help :)

Jahlani Jackson - 2020-05-24

whoops, hehe I used scented salt

LudVic - 2015-11-12

Hi man! In my home experiment I really like the production of hydrogen from alluminum foil and strong basic like Sodium hydroxide, but after the reaction, there is a process to reuse o recover the element from sodium alluminate?
Sorry for the english

RealChemistry - 2015-11-21

Why recover it??? Sodium idroxide and Aluminium are cheap reagents...

LudVic - 2015-11-21

+RealChemistry Yes you're right, but i don't need to recovery for the value of the reagent...

RealChemistry - 2015-11-21

Sodium metal??? Impossible hahhahah

LudVic - 2015-11-21

Jeremy Barun - 2019-06-06

Well
Faeces come out VERY DRY when you take magnesium sulfate

G0DzSC0PE - 2017-04-04

Please make a video on Acetylcholine extract

Fabri - 2020-01-05

Can i also dry this salt on my hot plate?

Kevin - 2018-10-03

hey, I know this is an older video, but what are the differences between the drying agents? like when to use which one? or they all work the same? do I need to worry or keep in mind if it will react with my solvents?

Jaya Saputra - 2018-09-28

Voilà, serve it while it's warm, pluffy, and crunchy.

Rhythm Jain - 2019-12-30

I buy my MgSO4 as fertilizer, they are as much as 5 times cheaper. Though they may contain more impurities as well.

Lucy - 2020-03-20

Can you separate Magnesium Sulfate from bath salt?

Francis Taylor - 2015-11-26

Hello, where do you buy your glassware.
Thank you.

NileRed - 2015-11-27

+Francis Taylor Ebay and AliExpress

Rhythm Jain - 2019-12-30

I buy most of my glassware from local suppliers at VERY cheap, but more obscure ones from AliExpress as well.

YouMockMe - 2020-05-27

It's 2020 so I hope to find that Ammonia generator, sweeeet

Thegauntlet04 - 2015-11-17

Nile Red, how do you go about cleaning your equipment?

NileRed - 2015-11-17

+Thegauntlet04 It all depends what the equipment in question is dirty with!

Thegauntlet04 - 2015-11-21

+Nile Red Say Corrosive materials for instance Hydrochloric Acid and the like.

NileRed - 2015-11-22

HCl is water soluble so I would just wash it away with water. That goes for pretty much all inorganic bases/acids. For organic acids/bases that arent water soluble, Ill just use something like acetone. Not too difficult. If stuff doesnt come off, ill use a base bath.

Also, hot water is pretty good at taking a lot of things off.

Daniel Lucas - 2015-11-16

magnesium sulfate works to dry ethanol?

Kerolox - 2016-01-07

+Daniel Lucas some online sources report that Magnesium Sulfate is sparingly soluble in Ethanol (I couldn't find any numbers), so it wouldn't hurt to add the MgSO4 and distill from that

Adam Kurcina - 2016-04-03

Can I use anhydrous CuSO4 as drying agent? :D

NileRed - 2016-04-03

+Adam Kurcina Sure, it just depends on what you are drying

Adam Kurcina - 2016-04-03

I would like to dry DCM, will it work ?

NileRed - 2016-04-03

@Adam Kurcina look up solvent compatibilities. I am not sure off the top of my head

0megalvyz1 - 2020-04-23

Thanks

Rowan Hodges - 2015-11-12

Thanks

perrin6 - 2019-08-20

should we open the door to the oven occasionally to let the moist air out, might dry quicker.

NeuronalAxon - 2019-10-13

Shouldn't be an issue with a fan oven I would've thought.

Threesixtydegree Orbits - 2015-11-12

Nice!

Very Spoopy - 2020-01-10

its ok for solvents to have a little bit of water, as a treat

Shivam Bhatt - 2015-11-12

If possible, please try to explore the chemistry and synthesis of aromatic compounds and reactions like Étard reaction, Friedel-Crafts, different reductions of Nitro derivatives and many more..

Apart from that, a big fan here. Love your videos. Keep it up!!

J H - 2019-04-09

How do you have something thats both fluffy and crunchy at the same time? lol. kidding. But you should do another on how to dry 3A sieves.

petit man - 2020-01-17

thats lit af

Camroc37 - 2015-11-17

I use MgSO4 to dry Nitrocellulose in a closed container. Not the best use, but it works.

john buster - 2020-02-14

how much do you need? A fourth of what he poured into the pan would have been easier. .More surface area per mole of MgSO4 used.

ExploitCode - 2015-11-23

How to calculate pH level the easiest way?

NileRed - 2015-11-25

+Epzilonz What do you mean? The pH of a solution? The best way is to just use a ranged pH paper (not the litmus). It will give you a number in the range of 1-14

ExploitCode - 2015-11-25

@Nile Red
How to know it without pH testing paper?

ExploitCode - 2015-11-25

+Nile Red Lowest known pH is not 1, its about -25 (Fluoroantimonic Acid).
And the highest pH is not 14, its 53 or higher... (tert-butyllithium).

NileRed - 2015-11-27

Yeah, I know, but for most purposes in organic chemistry, you work between 1 and 14.

Other than that, there are 2 methods that I can think of. Take a sample and titrate it with a standardized base or acid (depending on what you sample is) or buy a digital pH meter. I am not sure what the range on those are though.

Matt K - 2015-11-12

I enjoyed this video
good job.

NileRed - 2015-11-12

+Kid Kirby Thanks!

thebestofall007 - 2015-11-12

Do you use this drying agent in a desiccator bag/box?

Jantje J - 2020-02-29

I have bittersalt, 16% magnesium sulfate and 32% sulfur-trioxide, can I use this tot make a dessicant

DrMsIrKK - 2016-02-27

video on extracting acetylcholine would be great.

Blake F - 2016-09-20

extracting from what ????

Joey Hinds - 2015-11-14

MgSO4 should not decompose at these temps unless it somehow got around 1000C. I would guess that it might be impurities in the salt but you seem to be using USP grade. Maybe try reagent grade?

lian - 2020-07-14

Hi. do you know what other hygroscopic materials are skin-safe?

calver - 2015-11-17

I'm doing a chemistry project involving exploring interactions between acid's and bases. I've exhausted a lot of experiments, anybody got some notably interesting acid base experiments/ideas?

NileRed - 2015-11-18

What are some examples you have so far? I am blanking trying to think of some :p

calver - 2015-11-18

Finding the pH at a range of concentrations of strong and weak acids and strong and weak bases. Finding the pH of acid and bases over a range of temperature. Also investigating the effect of temperature on waters pH. Creating pH curves for strong acid vs strong alkali and the other 3 permutations. Finding the pH range and color range of some indicators. Making buffers and comparing calculated pH to measures pH, finding buffer capacity also, seeing how dilution effects their buffering. Finding the Ka from pH curves. Titration of vinegar to find the percentage acetic acid. Doing a thermometric titration between sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide and ethanoic acid. Finding the disassociation constant of a weak acid.

NileRed - 2015-11-18

You seem to already have a pretty good list! The only other thing i can really think of that is interesting is the "salting" of nitrogen containing molecules. I find the drastic changes in properties between the salt and the freebase to be quite interesting.

calver - 2015-11-18

I've written up a plan for my experimental procedures (bit of a post plan really, as I've already done half of them), would you mind taking a read? I don't really know the do's and donts for writing a chemistry writeup

NileRed - 2015-11-21

@S Calver sure sounds good to me. You can private message me if you like, or post it here.

DarthNinjaCode - 2015-11-12

Nile crushed :) couldn't resist
