Making Tropic Acid

Thy Labs - 2023-05-07

Here we are again running another organic synthesis. Tropic acid is the acid component in the natural poison atropine found in datura and belladonna. If you want to make this chemical resort to a different method. If you want to make atropic acid methyl ester the first step may be suited for you.

Get a 7% discount from laboratoriumdiscounter.nl using the code "THYLABS2024". It's totally wort checking them out.

The patent for ethyl atropate where I don´t see any reason why it should not work for the methyl ester: https://patents.google.com/patent/EP1104397A1/en

if we match up the purity with the weight of the final product we got a yield below 5% 💀

@mauricioalpizarrodriguez9078 - 2023-05-16

Could you pls make a video about 1,2-dichloroethane preparation? Im being looking for it to make thiocol polymer, I even tried to make it by the chlorination reaction that's used for benzylchloride but adding anhydrous HCl to boiling ethylene glycol under reflux. I know it can also be made by the chlorination of ethene gas using Cl2 with O2 and iron as catalysts, the problem with is that Im afraid about the reaction because I have no idea if its as dangerous as mixing Cl2 and ethyne 💀

@SciDOCMBC - 2025-02-03

1:23 I don't know why this color reaction occurred. However, I have seen a color reaction like this before. In his video "Why This SUBSTANCE Was BANNED Forever?" Thoisoi shows at minute 5:42 how to make a Bakelite-like plastic, but not from phenol and formaldehyde, but from resorcinol and formaldehyde. A similar dye is formed there too.

Great video man!

@sashboo1370 - 2023-05-08

"The funnel was gently shaken violently" I love it lol. Very cool synthesis, too bad yeilds werent the greatest. Can't wait for atropine!

@That_Chemist - 2023-05-07

Methyl esters are often a lot less stable than their ethyl ester counterpart - they can be far more susceptible to hydrolysis, as an example. This is one reason why you tend to see more commercially available ethyl esters.

(they are not always unstable, of course)

@THYZOID - 2023-05-07

makes sense. hydrolysis won´t be a problem in our case anyways. except maybe in the first step. this might be the reason the yield was so low

@PoorMansChemist - 2023-05-07

Very nice!!! You always do the most interesting stuff. 👍🙂👍

@georgkiesbauer337 - 2023-05-07

Here some tips for your ether safety (in case you dont already know it):
-always test your ether for peroxide before destilling it
-if peroxides are present the organikum recommends extracting them with aqueous koh then destillin g( not to dryness) to get some clean ether

@ejkozan - 2023-05-07

Sodium/Potassium hydroxide destroys peroxides. The same is done by activated alumina. The craziest method I have seen (from Purification of laboratory chemicals, Armarego) is distillation with LAH. A bit wasteful XD

@georgkiesbauer337 - 2023-05-07

Hm interesting, ive always thought that the used base deprotonates the peroxide an thus reduces the solubility of it. But i prophably remember it incorrectly. Using LAH sounds really not fun in combination with ethers xD

@ejkozan - 2023-05-07

@@georgkiesbauer337 well it destroys peroxides as OO bond is reactive, depending on reagent, you make some alcohols (reduction) some radicals, and msot often tar. For example diethyl ether with peroxide after addition of sodium hydroxide, if content is high enough goes yellow, very yellow, this unhealthy yellow XD

@georgkiesbauer337 - 2023-05-07

Hm that would also explain why it goes yellow :)

@ejkozan - 2023-05-08

@Experimental Chemistry   true, it is good to test, you never know how long it was stored in warehouse.
I always read and used glacial acetic plus KI. This forms elemental iodine in case of peroxides and I thought it is standard test. What happens in version you mentioned? Colour fades? Iodine is oxidised to iodate?

@chemistry-experiments78 - 2023-05-07

The pink color was similar to the color of a plastic produced from formaldehyde and phenol/resorcinol

@revimfadli4666 - 2023-05-24

I wonder what are the uses for poly(tropic acid)

@eaeis9879 - 2023-05-07

The color is probably due to the resonance of the enolate. Resonance stabilized enolates are often colourful whereas the protonated reactant phenylacetate possesses no resonance. I also think that you should conduct an oxa - Michael addition with benzyl alcohol or sodium benzylate and subsequent hydrogenation to deprotect the ether. I assume that your wet HCl fumes polymerized the acrylate

@crabcrab2024 - 2023-05-07

Hmmm… Something tells me we are going to see a synthesis of tropinone in the near future. Great video with interesting chemistry! Thank you, friend. I enjoy them so much.

@chemistryreacts - 2023-05-07

It was an honest effort!

@GAFUKIS - 2023-05-09

Fun fact: Another tropane alkaloid you may know is benzoylecgonine, or COCAINE

@I_XuMuK_I - 2023-05-10

Good luck now cheking on that di i-Pr ether for peroxides every few weeks now. That stuff is a bomb xD

@Alex-ee5pl - 2023-05-09

Tropinol is pretty interesting too

@ThopazProductions - 2023-05-07

Glaucestershire

@chemically_literate - 2023-05-08

Probably should've distilled off DCM before aq. NaOH hydrolysis step. TLC would also be your friend here.

@hoggif - 2023-05-14

Silicone tubing is probably a single use item when used with HCl gas. At least the tubing I have has been so and you also seemed to get a leak due to failure.

@monoamin_ - 2023-05-07

"Gently shaken violently" lmao

@defenestrated23 - 2023-05-08

The pinkest reaction I ever ran was a Vilsmeier. I think the iminium ion of DMF derivatives are pinkish, so possibility some short-lived conjugate of DMF and some impurities.

@sixtolavalle343 - 2023-05-07

"i swear to god i was just smoking a cig.. where'd it go i just had it?"

@joemccowan4624 - 2023-05-10

Not many people will get this but from all the trip report channels I've watched I do know that datura tends to make a person believe they are smoking but in reality there was no cig at all lol

@herwew7476 - 2023-05-07

@chanheosican6636 - 2023-05-08

I love the smell of diisopropyl ether. Smells much better than diethyl ether.

@asstronix6657 - 2023-05-07

In grocery store there is to get max. 37% Hydrochloric acid! Did you know about a method, to get a higher concentrated smoking acid? I've geared you can do this just with few boxes in a closed box and distilled water! Did you ever tried that method?

@THYZOID - 2023-05-07

i already showed a method to concentrate HCl but in this video we turned 33% HCl into more or less anhydrous HCl gas. thats basically the highest concentration of HCl you will ever get 99,9%+. regarding aqueous HCl 45% is the highest you can store without blowing up your storage bottle

@blox_rbx_real - 2023-05-07

Cool

@fmdj - 2024-03-06

0:25 ahah I know this supplier, they will sell absolutely anything to anyone no questions asked 😅

@THYZOID - 2024-03-06

new discount code "THYLABS2024" if you want it lol. for some products they want you to fill out an end use declaration though

@fmdj - 2024-03-06

@@THYZOID the only issue I have with them is that they deliver in packages with "laboratoriumdiscounter" written in large letters on them together with molecules drawings and it raises some eyebrows around me for some reason 😅

I've never seen that form you have to fill in, I haven't dared order too dangerous or really watched chemicals, but I've been surprised by a few things that managed to come through.

Thx for the code though, might still come in handy for my nuclear bomb project lol.

@THYZOID - 2024-03-06

the end use thing is for example required for HF, strychnine nitrate, testosterone, KNO3.....

@fmdj - 2024-03-06

@@THYZOID ahah KNO3 is sold on Amazon no questions asked, as well as sulphur and charcoal lol, but I understand why a form is asked on laboratoriumdiscounter sometimes
