Niacin (Vitamin B3) is decarboxylated into pyridine (which fuccing reeks) using a copper chromite catalyst. First we make the copper chromite catalyst from waste chromic acid waste I somehow generated in the past, then we do the decarboxylation distillation, chemically clean up the pyridine and then re-distil. Nothing too complicated, and I don't throw up, so it was a win for all, especially people who like doing chemistry in the middle of the night. How did they manage to make that smell like pyridine? It doesn't even contain anything fish-based!
maybe something in there binds to the same smell receptors
or the combined smell of the ingredients triggers a similar neurological response (atleast for me and the lab assistent)
i also have to mention that the smell of pyridin in this sauce is very feint nothing compared to opening a bottle of actual pyridine

Also, in Aus we can get B3 in most chemists now, sold as "Insolar", by Blackmores. It's not that cheep, but handy & good purity.

8:18 Uh, no, that makes total sense. I'd of started with less than a half of the niacin for the mixing then built up. It's easier to pay more attention to less material.

Would you be able to do a chemical decarb without the catalyst to obtain the pyridine?
I don't believe it works without the catalyst, or at least it would not work very well. So you need some copper in there at least
And now make piperidine by hydrogenation over Raney nickel. Pyridine also forms beautiful complexes with copper and nickel salts.
Can this be done with a weaker catalyst than copper chromite?
You can just chuck copper carbonate in, you do lose some yield though
You might want to watch out a bit with that stuff. I've heard that long exposure will kill your reproductive system

Ah yes. Pyridine. Back in my misspent yoof, I worked for a trucking company that had two clients (American Scientific and VWR Scientific). You always knew when one of them had a shipment of Pyridine. Even in a sealed bottle, you needed to give that stuff a wide berth. The phrases we liked to use was 'insupportable stench'.
Stench is a great word, seems very appropriate for it somehow. Disgusting. Yet labs were buying it as you say, so it must be pretty useful!
