Marius Banik - 2020-07-06

@Jay Talents Sorry bro, but we do live in capitalism. There is not a single company over a 50 employees that doesnt try to fool you in any ways possible. Brands are not your friends, it doesnt matter if you buy gray poupon or aldi mustard, if they can they WILL fuck you over. Dont burn down a single store... it creates a power gap that will just be filled by a diffrent company. Burn down the whole system. Brands are not your friends.

Jace M - 2020-07-07

Speaking of Facebook their actual site has fallen out of relevancy. Facebook is full of old people while instagram has all the young people. Luckily, they own Instagram

brandotendie - 2020-06-20

@Timothée Instagram is leagues more relevant than Snapchat now lol

F**k_v - 2020-06-21

I’m a little late but snap has been struggling for a while even though revenue has been up but actual people staying on the app has been lowering especially considering there peek but hey also they have a problem with turning a profit there stock is extremely over valued like amazon but that my two cents

Dice Flawless - 2020-09-24

Snapchat started dying when Instagram stole its features. Snapchat stated the whole story thing and then facebook/IG stole it.

Jaymations - 2020-06-28

Jon M but, like in the video mentioned, AWS and other resources Amazon has even out the losses of whole foods. Amazon is in the long, long, LONG game with whole foods

Abhishek Dev - 2020-08-12

@Jaymations sometimes that long...long..LONG..game simply doesn't mean anything.
Why Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett has bought Costco shares and not Amazon's??

Daniel Pronych - 2020-08-24

To think the same government who allows tax payer money (via food stamps) to subsidize Amazon not paying (at least some) employees enough to live, and, remarkably shocking, did not block the sale of Whole Foods ... interesting?

Abdulrahman Hegazy - 2020-09-03

Abhishek Dev Costco is very different from amazon costco target very different people by offering cheap prices by losing money in some products but in reality people spend more because of Costco chain design and selling things under their own brand (kirkland) and their subscriptions and Costco(153.78b) is very small compared to amazon(1.69 t) and have a lot of room to grow

Abdulrahman Hegazy - 2020-09-03

This reminds me of the era of Rockafeller and the like with top down integration. Owning the railroad and the coal mine and the iron smelting, etc etc.

It seems that a broader interpretation of the laws that broke up those companies could be applied to tech companies today

Travis Wolf - 2020-05-16

The government intervention laws single handily saved many of our American ancestors livelihoods. Yes too much intervention isn’t great, but it sure as hell did save a lot of us. I think this would be a pretty good idea for tech companies, we are told these monopolies make our lives easier, which it might, but if it hasn’t yet, it will come at a big price tag and we won’t have anywhere else to go soon

Checkmate - 2020-06-19

@Stevospeedo I'm not a big fan of our president, but badmouthing other people's culture isn't what you should be doing

wnxdafriz - 2020-06-27

well top down has more to do with carnegie, rockafeller just undercut all the people that he could outlast because he had more money and ended up buying them out then raising the prices

Artur Pinto - 2020-09-15

With the difference that:
1) 2 different eras
2) 2 different business models
3) 2 different types of consumer needs
4) 2 different types of transportation and integration, which led us to
5) In the Gilded Age, a german company would have a hard time moving to America and competing. In today's world, such barriers almost don't exist, which means an american breakup may benefit chinese/japanese/korean companies with no such barriers.

Darth Utah 66 - 2020-10-26

fun fact: Standard Oil was already losing market share by the time it was broken up. It had a market share of 90% at the start of the 20th century but by 1911, it had fallen to 64%, mainly due to competition from smaller companies.

There was an ad. for Amazon before this vid.
I needed to edit this comment, since there was an ad. for Amazon after the vid.

Honest Engine - 2020-04-30

I sell on Amazon and now, they are dictating sales price. If i sell a product that is NON ESSENTIAL (during this covid19 situation) and sell it for 1 penny over their dictated price, the listing is pulled. I complained and tried and tried and there is no way around it. Shipping is expensive and amazon fees are add into the price but at their dictated price, i'm making probably 2 bucks off an item! I reached out to the attorney general of Massachusetts only to hear that I'm a business (i'm a person, dba) and they said i need to hire a lawyer. I contacted a class action company only to be turned down because the dollar amount is not something that interests them..but this is happening to multiple thousands of other sellers. So not only is Amazon putting small business out...now, they limit the income! And here's the kicker, they have an ad saying they have thousands of small businesses that sell on Amazon. Only if the small business owns and makes it's own product is Amazon a benefit. If that small business resells items, Amazon is putting those small businesses out as many brands will not let you sell it on Amazon..Amazon gets that prize! And they have complete control over the upc as it can only be changed by the brand holder. So after years of building up a brand, it can all go bye-bye when a company forbids resale on Amazon. Amazon directly competes with resellers and has all the info...invoices, data sheets and more. Honestly...Amazon needs to come down. It is no friend to America but will Americans figure this out? I don't think so. During the crisis, the reason a lot of these items are not there locally is because companies like Amazon put so many small companies out of business.

Jeff owns more of the internet than you think. He owns part of Google, Airbnb, Twitter, Twitch, business insider, Wall street journal, IMDB, and if you open a retail company, he will buy you (Zappos, Quidsi, Diapers.com). The guy who sold his company to Jeff asked him why he did it, if it was out of necessity or because he wanted to. Jeff answered: "A bit of both", and smiled. The story is online. He's in it for the power IMO. The interesting part is that Amazon still doesn't have a lot of market share of online retail and it's pillars such as AWS etc.. if they undercut prices, they'll grow even more. He saw the internet, the power of data, and did it. If the gov. doesn't do anything, no one will.

JOSEPH - 2019-10-09

Low Prices will always have a Catch, we're just too lazy and shortsighted to see it.

JOSEPH - 2020-07-27

@MrHammer2088 Many things to consider here. China Is an immensely corrupt system. The people Incharge, (Not the people who are on the rice fields and the sweatshops) are incredibly Corrupt. The money they earn goes up top while the people suffer. Just know this before you get into the socialist/communist bandwagon.

Ask any economist, what killed your wealth isn't simply that the CEO's are taking all the money. Thats part of the factor, but not the only one. Besides, thats just corruption, NOT capitalism. What happened in 2008 crash is corruption, not capitalism. There wouldn't be jobs for you to have, or goods for you to buy with, without Capitalism. Capitalism is a sucky system, but its the Best system we got that we know works. It has brought tremendous wealth and innovation, that communism never will give.

Greed from the bottom up Does exist. One perfect example is Corrupt Unions. Where the leaders in these unions actually tell people to work in a more slow, mediocre pace because they want to freeload off company expenses. Happens all the time This work mentality is immensly corrupt. Infact, socialism is a system that relies on the greed of the bottom. These systems usually run out of money and do not work.

MrHammer2088 - 2020-07-27

@JOSEPH WOW!! The top 1% controls 95% of the wealth in this country and you call China an immensely corrupt system 🙉🤦🏽‍♀️
I don't support communism so let's get that out the way- it just kills me that we always point fingers at other countries like china as being hell when we probably have as many poverty stricken and homeless people as they do despite being a smaller population..

It's sad and disturbing that you would use unions as the example of greed from the bottom up🤦🏽‍♀️
You sound like the very people who writes the American history txt books.. slavery was just a footnote despite the impact on Americas powerful economic development... the civil war was about protecting ones way of life and not to continue oppress black folks(the underprivileged) but I digress..
I support capitalism if it's not at the expense of the citizens (especially that 70% that's living paycheck to paycheck) does Apple rings a bell🤔 produce a phone for $200 in china and brings it to America and sells it for $1000.. would there be a problem if they build it here for $700 and sell it for $1000- of course they would- that margin wouldn't be desirable 😢
America is so great at marketing- they'll piss on your head and tell you its raining 💵 sell you shit and tell you its healthy for you and will extend your life..

As for socialism- the people of Switzerland and Holland are not dieing to migrate to America to enjoy its capitalist culture - are they?
So socialism must be working great for some countries..
We already have socialism here in America- capitalism leads the way- both ends need cleansing- they can work fine together here- the problem is there's too much of a power struggle going on amongst the people who care more about themselves than others .. while homelessness continues to grow out of control- with so many being our military veterans..😢

JOSEPH - 2020-07-28

@MrHammer2088 The problem is alot simpler than you are thinking. You said it already - its Sinful men. Greed. Maniacal Egotism.

It corrupts CEOs, and it corrupts your Local fundraiser. It corrupts the workers Unions, and it corrupts the Government officials.

In theory you could have the shittiest system on the planet. If people didn't corrupt it - it would work swimmingly. And people could work with it however inefficient.

@Karen Smith Not entirely true, Rome fell because of government incompetency, inefficient spending, increasing debt levels that weren't paid off, mass corruption, invasions because they kept making enemies, lack of sustainability, over expansion without a plan to manage everything properly, and etc. A company can be big but as long as it doesn't do what Rome did in the past, can properly manage itself, doesn't get into debt or pays it off quick, has competent governing in terms of leadership, has efficient and proper systems in place to run things. Then the company will be fine.

AWS came directly from the overcapacity Amazon had to build to handle Christmass shopping season. So, actually it did have quite a bit to do with the retail store.
Not a defense of Amazon, but an interesting detail worth getting correct.

Aalilyah Thomas - 2019-11-01

Travis Collier it’s cute that you genuinely believe that.

Travis Collier - 2019-11-02

@Aalilyah Thomas I'm old enough to remember AWS getting setup. About 1/2 of my friends from college moved up to the Bay Area after graduating in the late 90s.

Aalilyah Thomas - 2019-11-02

Travis Collier not questioning your age. I’m just saying believing that is an underestimation if a company that has historically been about long game. It’s the equivalent of saying, well they just always wanted to be a book store. I’m basically calling you naive. Even though you are factually correct that that was a statement that was made.

Travis Collier - 2019-11-04

@Aalilyah Thomas They've always had plans for retail dominance, but from everything I heard, cloud hosting was a lucky/clever fluke.
It isn't about my age really. It is about the fact that I know folks who used AWS in those very early days when Amazon was trying to see if there was any demand at all for their extra capacity (as well as folks building out and maintaining the server farms).
Don't give them too much credit ;)

Aalilyah Thomas - 2019-11-04

Travis Collier let’s agree to disagree then. I see your point though.

The major implication is that monopolies are making a come back, Amazon being too big is a MAJOR issue! When you have complete control over an industry, you can sell whatever you want for however much you want, with the internet being more and more connected to our way of life, to the point that it is becoming a necessity to have access to the internet, a monopoly over it could devastate the standard of living for everyone.

Lol

Max Power - 2020-05-15

I'm sure Bezos works billions of times harder or smarter than his slaves, I mean, employees. Dodging taxes counts as working hard too?

The government broke up "Ma Bell" years ago and it wasn't the end of the world. For the younger folks.... that was THE phone company. Not cell phones.... there was no such thing yet. Customers got a bigger selection and better service for a better price in the long run. Modern monopolies are much more dangerous since they have taken control of what we are "allowed" to see. We have always been proud of our 1st. Amendment in the US but these modern monopolies have taken it upon themselves to decide what is and what isn't good for us. That has led to a dramatic loss of freedom of speech. They have done so while also aiding one political party in particular. This is extremely, extremely dangerous. Of course, they hide behind the "User Agreement" nonsense that must be accepted to utilize their service, even though many times we are paying for those services. The fact that YouTube is allowed to demonetize and delete so many videos, even those that they used to allow to be viewed, should be a warning to everyone. Today it may be against certain views you don't like BUT tomorrow it may be against your views and beliefs. Sure, it can be said that no one is being forced to use their services but they have created an atmosphere and financial situation in which another competitor cannot compete with them. That is a huge problem in regards to monopolies. Monopolies are dangerous, just look at how many businesses have been closed and buildings emptied and workers losing their jobs...... just by Amazon alone. Fair competition has always been important but it has become even more important in the global world we are now living in.

Life: How much profit do you want
Amazon: Well, Yes but actually no

Daniel Pronych - 2020-08-24

Amazon being a publicly traded company is about the founder and CEO being rich? What does this have to do with Amazon actually having a profit?

John Brooks - 2019-07-08

5:16 You said 100 thousand gb, but the graphic says 100 million gb.

Dale Winston - 2019-11-15

You get his point tho right?

Evexin - 2020-04-21

John Brooks he might have meant 100,000 tb would would essentially be the same thing

Brent Kim - 2020-05-16

Or make it even easier and seize the means of production

Siegfried - 2019-10-26

obviously, thats why we're setting it on fire

ValentinoE88 - 2019-07-20

False. Amazon prices have gotten more expensive. Target has been cheaper than Amazon on many things I buy regularly. Sprouts farmers market is cheaper than Amazon too.

wnxdafriz - 2019-08-19

amazon hasn't been cheaper in a long time... the only thing they had that consistently stayed cheaper were overseas items..... the only thing amazon regularly checks on prices is whatever is walmart is charging... walmart actually drops a price online then amazon follows suit

considering they directly compete with brick and mortar giants... they don't pricematch at all... go to a walmart, target, or a bestbuy and they will pricematch amazon or any other direct competitor

69’sLeft Hand - 2020-01-02

I thought Target got more expensive Legos aren’t cheap

Anonym - 2020-01-07

@wnxdafriz Well the thing is: Amazon is mostly a marketplace. It sure sells it's own goods (which is a whole different form of evil as amazon checks whats popular, produces the product by itself and outcompetes it's own retailers) but mostly it's third party retailers selling and shipping the goods. Amazon gets 15% of every sale so a lot of retailers went to put those 15% on top of their shelveprices to keep their margins. Big Ratail Chains like wallmart should easily be able to compete with the prices of the retailers on amazon.

Jacob Robinson - 2020-03-28

ValentinoE88 Same story as Walmart

SWLinPHX - 2020-06-08

Walmart has always been cheaper than Target, and with more selection too.

THGamingYT - 2019-12-08

Since it’s too big I’ll gladly take some of its revenue

Blinds 88 - 2020-11-01

Big companies aren’t a bad thing until they start censoring and acting like they are the law

aquafire - 2019-10-16

Got an ad before this saying “do you want amazon to pay your insurance” or something. The irony.

What I basically heard from this, is break up big tech, unless it's Apple because you like Apple...

cyncynshop - 2020-03-21

.....your understanding is so amazing that you managed to think of this as the takeaway.
Polymatter literally presented the matter from points of many sides and said "this is a nuanced problem so I don't know" and somehow you still think he wants to break big tech companies and likes apple for some reason. He literally just pointed out Apple's unfair competition within its own playltform.

brandotendie - 2020-06-20

so what i basically get from this comment is that you literally don't have any comprehension
