"Math Boy"
Can we just pause for a second and appreciate whoever made the visualization at 6:00? I have no idea how you made it, but that is seriously freakin awesome.
Thanks. I did it. I'm Dan from the video.
Those were done by Dan Walsh! They were a combination of fluid dynamics equations and beauty, made in Mathematica
Do you have some sort of self-worth problems that you need to make a comment that starts with "Can we" in a public forum?
Ok my question is how did you make the graphic of the wobbling square? Is that actually a numerical simulation using the Naveir-Stokes equation? Or is it just a graphic made to look like what you saw? Seems like a supercomputer would be needed if it’s real...
eh?
Physics Girl the answer to everything is the wiggly whow whow whow behavior. Duhh
Could two vortex rings be interlaced at normal angle without disturbing each other for a short lapse ?
Looks organic, like some kind of worm.
Physics Girl I wanna see the maths behind it
3blue1brown's face doesn't match his voice
i thought he was black....
excatly
I thought he is a professor in his 40s...
I thought he'd be a greying prof, tweed jacket, and a pipe. Dude is so young. I'm doubly impressed.
@Xaracen exactly what I think too
I've spent 8 years working on a PhD in this field and you.. just... youtube it out.
Physicsgirl wins.
I laughed way too hard
i'M SORRY.
Hi, do you have any online writing on this topic ? I have to understand this phenomenon for an university project and i got lost on Internet a lot of time :3
@Major Tom
Damn like that??
“Come at me, fluid dynamicists!” 😂😂🤣🤣💀 Gotta be the first time that sentence has ever been uttered.
CONGRATS! Forbes' 30 under 30. Well deserved.
Thank you!! 😁
Waiting for vortex rings through triangular holes
You'll get an oscillating triangle where the edges and vertices swap positions in the same fashion as the square, and for the same reasons.
what about vortex rings in the 4th dimension
I have done that with my dad's iPad's lid.
Who here from Down the Rabbit Hole?
man that video was depressing af
link?
@Professor nokaydokay It's the first thing that comes up when you YouTube search "down the rabbit hole", it is the TempleOS one. But to let you know, it really doesn't have anything to do with PhysicsGirl or Dianna Cowern at all, she is just mentioned a few times in it.
Whoa! I thought 3blue1brown guy was like middle-aged man with like a bald spot
700th like lmao
@Garry Iglesias lol calm down old man
Depressing to see how knowledgeable and articulate he is, despite his youthful appearance.
Hahahahahahaha lmao
@Peetiegonzalez It's pronounced D!NG (Ding)
I'm here from "Down the Rabbit Hole." I'm now a fan and a subscriber.
How did Knudsen get you here?
"We got a tarp. If I burn through the tarp, I deserve an award."

You should go further and make the exit hole square but 3 dimensional, with the corners pointing inwards. To hopefully make the entire ring come out at the same time and stay square.
7:36 Laminar flow? Yo, where's Destin?
You broke my boy Terry's heart :'(
@Poodonkis14 She posted on twitter 7 hours ago.
me doing vape tricks "I can make a square vape vortex"
2:40 my prediction is that it produces a normal vortex ring characterized by the smallest dimension of the rectangle.
3:05 they appear to be the same size as the original hole :/
6:35 is it still unsolved and waiting to be solved by someone by giving prize of worth US $1,000,000 !!!!
I concur with your decision to hand wave Navier Stokes
@susan ghimire YOU HAVE NOT SEEN MY CHANNEL
me too
Best wishes. Thanks for sharing, Lord-Jesus-Christ com
@No this is Patrick I feel the same, but I want to see more about electrical phenomena aswell
Destin! You should do a laminar flow episode of laminar flow in air, also check out “vape tricks” for cool ways to split vortex rings, create triangles and squares, and other phenomena, id like to see someone try to replicate that on a trashcan sized vortex ring
That looks like a lot of fun. I'm going to build a big one in my garden for parties.
Do a collab with The Slo Mo Guys
3:47 "wawwng wawwng wawwng" -- is that sounds effects from "The Science Asylum" ??
I thought Grant was like 60+ years old. He has a mesmerizing, I am going to pay attention to this guy voice.
1:58 "New, from RonCo! It's Mr. Vortex Cannon!"
What is limit of acceleration between it's open ends
-oo. To +oo
3:52 "Ethan, great moves! Keep it up!"
3:32 Permita-me usar uma expressão brasileira: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I see that Starset shirt.
YESSSSSS!
Could the behaviour of these vortexes be analogous to the way string theory describes the fundamental particles, as in the the vibrations in the quantum fields? They seem to exhibit properties like spin, momentum, and even some kind of charge like attraction, including orbiting each other, which kind of resemble electrons orbiting protons or a molecule.
duh.
"You're not going to see it that easily." I just skipped forward.
"When we were playing around,"
Girl, that's literally what physicists do. That's what so many people don't get about physics. That's why nerds are crazy about physics (besides the fact that physics is literally-sry for saying literally so many times-amazing)
3b1b and physics girl 😲😲😭😭 this is the best thing that happened to me today 😭😭
3:32 love their reaction :3
As I watched the vortex from the square hole - my son confirmed “you’re making the same face!” Haha! Ihad the same reaction to seeing it wobble and switch shapes!!! So your thumbnail choice was perfect 👌
I watched “Amber says “what?!”” , and now I watch “Dianna says “what!?”” 2:04

in comment section 🤩🤩🤩
3:18 "From a square to a diamond shape"... did you mean from a square to a square?
More specifically, from square to octagon to square rotated 45 degrees to another octagon back to a 0 degree square
I don’t know if I’d call it came out of that thing a square, looked oddly circular to me 🤔
The last bit would've been way better with Pink Floyd as background music.
So many great visuals :) Kudos to your graphic design team, and awesome idea with the laser.
@Aaron Curtis Cody from Cody's lab too
whoaaaa pe here ..i am your great fan sir
Practical Engineering when do you post an awsome videos
@Aaron Curtis Electroboom would try to electrify the vortex rings somehow. Not sure how, but think Tesla coil.
aww grady felt left out :P
Two of my favorite science channels collabing and the three of them interacting is a dream come true!! (considering the Action Lab comment) You all have inspired and helped me so much during my math undergrad years!
3:30 caps lock aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa this too cool
That experiment is gorgeous, i love it !
I would have never imagined it would wobble back and forth like that.
I wish school would teach me fluid dynamics like this. I'd never forget it!
You wanted that thumbnail, people. I hope you're happy. 😂
I wanna know more about that wawawa. "Couldnt find anything on it." If i could just know how its writen...
@EVIL KH physics+math=physics...
WHAT......no "Happy Physicsing" at the end 🤔😏☹
You got mad power. Dangerous woman.
Yeaaaaay
...still need do controlled experimentation with 'helical-spinning' the vortex, left vs right...

Let's be honest, that vortex cannon had it coming with that smug look on its face.

How many times have you been told you look and sound like Norm MacDonald? You could totally be his son, I wouldn't be at all surprised! Hahaha 😂🤣

Cool to see you not as pi! Love your channel
