RDX aka cyclonite. Part one of two.
Casual chemistry and classical music explained eloquently is truly relaxing thank you
Pleasure to be on another watchlist with you boys!
Yesirrrr fun thing about explosives is you don't even have to use em you just flip a light switch now days and society will kill itself
Seriously! There should be a 10 sec min disclaimer before the vid starts. We’re so screwed.
Just take the security check at the airport as a badge of honor
@TheSquirreless they love when you moan during the search.
I honestly don't know what's so bad about this when there are kids at collage supporting Hamas which is a terrorist's organization just like ISIS. I get that explosives can be dangerous but when you have kids protesting in the streets for a terrorist organization and attacking Jewish students we at least shouldn't be at the top of the list. Also the boarder is also open and now there is a ton of way more illegal stuff for them to worry about.
I Cant wait for a random white work van with tinted windows ive never seen before be parked across the street from my house because of this
So what they want to do ? Lobotomie ?
Knowing things is not a crime.

Yet.
We're all in this together, lol.
That beginning about humanity being the disease and cyclonite is the cure 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If you want to hang out, you've gotta take her out, RDX!
If you want to get down, get down on the ground, RDX!
She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie
RDX
Haha dude that joke had me cracking up. Reminds me of being in an infantry unit again. Same sense of humor. Good shit man. Very informative videos. Keep it up, I love learning this stuff
I don’t ever plan to make any of this stuff, I just like watching someone wearing Army surplus gear give me a top notch explosives chemistry lecture from his shack.
Couldn’t agree more
its like the unibomber and christian bale had an illegitimate lovechild
After subscribing simply because I love Dugan and then watching the video, I would just like to say high to my new FBI agent assigned to me 🖐
Bruh, now dea may be hooked up too... Shucks)
Hexamine used to be used in small backpacking stoves and MRE heaters. Burns very cleanly with a smokeless flame. Just nitrate it twice to make the RDX. First with 65% then with red fuming as the free NO2. Add nitric slowly on an ice/brine bath. HDN will precipitate. Separate from the excess acid. Next wash with ice water, then with acetone. Nitrating the filter paper will prevent the acid from eating it away, but should use a regular one for acetone wash. Next dry under vacuum or with forced cool dry air. Next use streight fuming nitric acid to convert the precipitate to RDX. ❤
It’s still used in heating tabs of some brands. There’s about 1-2% wax added so you need to recryst it which is annoying because it’s got an inverse solubility curve in water based on temperature.
Hello. Thank you! I can see right away that I'm going to lose myself while I binge-watch your video catalog. I actively seek out great content and I'm happy I found yours.
I think about you often Dugan, (no homo). glad to see youre doing well. just happened to stumble upon this new channel today.
Me: Move me from the 'watchlist', to the 'act-list' please
Youtube: No worries my man, I got you, watch this.
What’s crazy is he isn’t reading a script, he just has all this off hand knowledge. I know people at bae or Holston defense that can’t talk this knowledgeable about it and it’s there career
The legend returns. Good to see you man.
"100c.... You know, room temperature" 😂
Thats a warm ass room😂
Nice opening reference, Mr. Bateman, very nice.
Stop! My body is a temple!
Good to see you back! Love the new content.
I have bimetal pepper spray!
Thank you for your dedication to energy
Humanitys not a disease, there's just shitty people fucking it up for everyone else. Love the channel. Your setup has an alchemical vibe to it. Thank you for having the balls to do this. Keep it up
I never thought I would like chemistry, but I took an honors chemistry course this year and can now understand most of this. I love chemistry now! kinda funny how quickly my opinion changed
Love you buddy, hopefully you keep pumping videos out.
Could listen for hours :)
Glad to see you back!!! I donated what I could, I pray you and your family have a Merry Christmas!!!
Sup dug, thanks for the knowledge bombs.
4:42 I believe they also developed several versions of Composition C (C-1, C-2, C-3) with explosive plasticizers based on a mixture of mono-, di- and tri-nitrotoluene; the Germans used a similar recipe for their Hexoplast.
However, due to the toxicity of the dinitrotoluene and the brittleness of the material at wintertime temperatures, they ultimately went with a non-explosive plasticizer for C-4.
7:20 I'm pretty sure the "p" is supposed to be a "ρ" (Greek lowercase "rho"), since it is commonly used to represent density.
That's right
Subbed. Great delivery on every video you have uploaded so far, great pace, great content and you dont treat the viewer like their stupid. 👌
Love you dug, been waiting on the energetics series for a long time
was not expecting this channel in my recommendations, but I'm about it!
Absolutely an excellent choice in music. That is J.S. Bach.
fascinating breakdown of the history of RDX. Excited for pt 2!
THANKS DAD I LISTENED AND LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY ✌🇨🇦 BROTHER
Hi Dugan,
I am a long time fan of CarniK Con. I am so glad to see that you look well. Last I heard, you had advanced MS and were partially paralyzed. I'm elated to see that you were able to get treatment and are in recession.
Your video is excellent. Unlike all these dimwit haters discussing "100C vs room temp," e.g., bikeshedding, I am an actual chemist employed by a respectable organization. I am very impressed with your presentation and knowledge of energetics chemistry. I haven't met anyone that has dug into this topic to the depth you have without a formal chemistry education. What resources have you used to learn general chemistry and synthesis techniques?
Personally, the video was an appropriate long-form length. People that care about explosives and chemistry will naturally find the information interesting. Also, I love the baroque music ;) A nice touch. I've archived your videos for the future. I will be waiting for part 2!
I dropped out of highschool in 10th grade. My preferred beer is PBR because a 30 case is less than $20!

Thanks for the reply, Dugan. I see in your other videos that you are synthesizing new analogues. I'm impressed! I've never heard someone who dropped out of high school speak with real chemical literacy before you. Did you learn general + organic chemistry from online courses, or from exposure in the energetic community, or perhaps a great mentor?
I started with end use on MDI systems in Ramadi, then did course support at the Army's Sapper Leader Course which was more creative. Then over time, got to a better comprehensive understanding due to needs of business in defense industry. I have limitations. Im sure i'll be f*cking something up any video now. My strongest suit is system analysis and system parsing for comprehension/ ease of presentation. It may make me look smarter than I am. The smartest guy in energetics is the one who's still breathing. @@feblehober123

Thanks for the reply, that makes a lot of sense since you have all of the experience from doing videos for years. Keep it up with the presentations, I have watched all of them and they are great!
Don't make me blush@@feblehober123
Glad to see you are feeling good enough to film again.
that intro is so good dude. lol
Just what I needed to unwind this evening!
Bro is Cody'sLab 2.0, still waiting for the 2nd part of Nitroguanadine. Nice videos btw, don't quit doing it
Do I let the sulfuric acid water mix cool off before I put the hexamine in the mixture?
I like the history mixed with the technical data, and also nice little bit of reloading stuff in the background
You look really good in the eyes man. Thanks for making something new. Love the only videos too 😊.
LET HIM COOK
I love this guy so much
You are an absolute hero.
Something's changing. Today it's a video about RDX and yesterday I was watching some French guy explain missile guidance systems...
Man, feels so weird to miss CarnikCon for so many years, just to find him back on an obscure channel about explosives.
Sir, this is a christian baking channel.
Question: Regarding the Bachmann method using Ammonium Nitrate, if I start with dinitrohexamine rather than Hexamine, will the enhanced yield be experienced?
Some people have claimed that HDN increases yield but I have not found this in testing.
Mr. Ashley, truly incredible amazing videos. Hopefully somebody's downloading them in case they get pulled. This is very much off topic and somewhat boutique, but I have a burning academic / theoretical question. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere and I don't know anyone apart from you that might have the answer. Is it possible / practical for an EFP to be made from ANFO given the lower det velocity? Also, are you on Reddit and do you have a patreon or equivalent? Thank you.
Try some of Energetic Heretic/tetrazolelover’s AN/AL/ sodium hypophosphite mixtures. He has a couple videos using them in EFPs.
I just don't know. For armor defeat in general, the fluid cavitation is suspected to begin at over 5 km/s. Where the EFP seems to just sort of pass through a material as if it weren't there. I've heard this discussed offhand from munition manufacturers, no idea if they know what theyre talking about. You would just have to test it for yourself to know for sure. It will definitely do "something". ANFO is highly versatile, different fuels can give different velocities. The mixture of ANFO can change physical properties too. There are cocrystals like AN and Glycine which can be melt casted and allow more intimate mixture of fuel and oxidizer. I suspect it increases velocity.
Christian bale really on some nice spicy chemistry now!!!
Dude reminds me of Christian Bale.
Dugan, I just found this channel yesterday and have already consumed 5 videos. I would like to ask if you would consider demonstrating the various additives that are used with nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin to make modern smokeless powders? This isn’t a topic that I am very educated on yet, so it could be that I simply do not know the correct search terms, but I have had a lot of trouble finding this information.
Nitrocellulose stabilized enough for useable gunpowder, is unfortunately one of the most difficult materials to prepare and store. The nitrogen content can vary by only a few percent with wild resulting behavior and stability. The washing and deacidification steps are more than other materials. It is too big of a topic to cover and I dont have experience enough to safely recommend any procedure or process.
@@duganashley1337 Thanks for the reply, this is insightful
