Making calcium cyanamide via pyrolysis of calcium cyanurate at high temperature. firstly we made calcium cyanurate using pool stabilizer cyanuric acid in a large solution nad added sodium hydroxide to form sodium cyanurate and finally used a slight excess of calcium chloride to form the targeted product with sodium chloride as a side product. the calcium cyanurate is somewhat soluble in hot water but further precipitates on cooling. We washed and decanted several times to remove all traces of alkali metal contamination- This step MUST be done otherwise dangerous sodium cyanide may form during the heating which will be bad news when the cyanamide is used later in an acidic solution to make Aminoguanidine bicarbonate in a later preparation. The identity test was nitric acid/cyanamide in a solution with a second solution added of ammoniacal silver nitrate to precipitate a very vibrant yellow salt of silver cyanamide. This test can also be used to determine the purity of the product however i ran out of nitric acid. the theoretical yield vs actual yield are calculated to determine % and a nitrogen percentage Music credit goes to bensound.com royalty free music.
I don't know what the music was, but it has a piercing high note that makes it painful to listen to.
I take it you don't feel you're over washing it, then you're not washing it enough.
Hey, whats the difference between the cyanide ion and the cyanamide ion? Is cyanide more lethal?
LithiumLeopard cyanide is certainly more lethal however cyanamide in conjunction with alcohol can cause serious health issues. Cyanamide has bee looked at as an anti alcoholism drug for this reason.
Vergi nice video Diablo, but how calcium cyanide solubility water ? is it alternative source Urea and calcium oxide fuse reaction calcium cyanide ? thanks
this is cyanamide not cyanide. the cyanamide is soluble in cold water a little but decomposed in hot water. calcium oxide/urea heated makes calcium cyanate which will also work. i hate the ammonia produced via that method so i use the cyanurate/CaCl2 route. this then needs further heat-800C+ to form the cyanamide.
thank yo Diablo you right this is ca cyanurate. But not found easly cyanuric acid, what is the alternative source of cyanuric acid ? maybe commercial available Sodium dichloroisocyanurate %56, soluble water high and NaOH with CaCI2 form Calcium cyanurate ? what do you think ?
Mehmet Koyuncu cyanuric /isocyanuric acid is a pool stabiliser, where I live it is sold in 2kg lots at pool stores and hardware stores. Perhaps to use an acid like HCl to free the chlorine from the Dichloroisocyanurate and be left with cyanuric acid which can be evaporated to get the dry powder? If you have the chemicals it May be easier to form the cyanate from Ca oxide/urea. As you suggested. It is quite easy but a lot of ammonia is produced.
how did you clean your fritted funnel im having trouble finding a suitable solvent
Cleaning which chemical?
@AllChemystery cleaning the calcium cyanurate from the frit i just ended ur running some conc hno3 and aqua regia through there but im starting to suspect there could of been something else in there from another project
Is this illegal
Gisela Braula no.

This is nice vid, i wonder if similar reaction is possible to make MnNCN for example ?
AllChemystery - 2016-12-03
cons.boite consultation I guess so but what would you need a manganese version for? The calcium salt was chosen so when it is condensed with hydrazine sulfate later you get insoluble calcium sulfate which is easy to separate later on.

Hi, I think MnNCN can be a good material to be used for batteries. There are many ways to prepare MnNCN (see for example Adv. Energy Mater. 2016, 1601127) , but I think that your method is the simplest one. So if the method can be used this will be great
