Cody'sLab - 2024-10-30
I test out a system to convert urea (in urine) into nitrate via bacterial oxidation. This is primarily for converting waste to usable fertilizer but could have other uses.
How much do you like Cody’s Lab?
“I immediately watched an entire video about a pee tower.”
A PEE TOWER
In Disco Elysium two old men are found playing pee tank
on a platform where the last 25% of any given upload is viewed by almost no one, I gobbled up every last drop of this pee video without tabbing away or even looking at my phone.
And it was unironically very interesting as well!

I assumed from the title he was going to say he got mercury poisoning, so this is better lol
Thank god for DeArrow, never have to worry about this kinda stuff

Years ago (maybe 200) doctors tried to see what urine tasted like (if it was sweet) to determine whether someone had diabetes
@peterelwert5598 diabetes is one of the first documented illnesses because of this. very ancient method of diagnosis, like 5000+ years old.
Honestly, Cody, right after you reflected on your life choices, and right before you said "it's a wonder I'm still single!" my answer was that I thought "what a wonderful life!" I know not everything is in fact wonderful in ANY life, but your life sounds pretty cool to nerds like us.

Truth! I've thought that often while watching his vids. I get a big kick out of the variety of projects and ways to use practical things different from intended purpose. Plus, I'm a geo-nerd, and "let's try this to see what happens" person, so in my book he's living the dream.🍀

One amazing thing that Cody thought me is that random scientific approach in vastly different subject can have unexpected link.

For a future iteration you should add some nozzles to the pipe on top to increase spray surface area and oxidize faster. Maybe even a grid of pipes for more spraying spots too. Keep up the amazing work! Get projects done! Stay awesome
Having run a spray aeroponics rig, I can see why he doesn't. It'd be an aromatic bugger to unblock...
you can get liquid ammonia and nitrate tests that are much more accurate if you want specific values
I love this ! I used to do a fishless tank cycles just by added ammonia to my empty water filled tank and just wait with the filter running testing for nitrites then nitrates and continue dosing with ammonia into it until it would remove 1 ppm of ammonia in 24 hours then do a 50 % water change and stock with fish :)
do you tense?
If anyone is confused, the title of the video used to be "I am the fish." It was changed, and now that title is being used for a patron only version of this video.

Hi Cody, I'm working on a selective breeding project involving Triops Cancriformis. From everything i'm learning about them in terms of their radiation resistance, rapid life cycle, storable eggs, adaptability to different oxygen levels and extremely easy care I reckon they'd be ideal for a martian aquaponics setup. They aren't palatable but they are edible and if you were to keep them in low temperatures post hatching say 3-10C, then they live much longer and grow considerably larger too.
Ive been watching for around a decade and I still cannot guess what the next video will be about. Seeing a new upload in the feed is always a welcome surprise. Keep it up Cody, I hope to continue watching for decades to come!
Cody this is probably my favorite of your experiments that you have done so far as it directly relates to my work selling aquarium fish. We would probably call what you've created a trickle tower in the industry, and that is the type of filtration we use to most efficiently oxidize ammonia to nitrates, while a submerged or wet/ dry filter may also offer some anoxic nitrification and produce nitrogen gas with different species of bacteria. I'm really interested in using something like this to explain the denitrification process to my customers (and even some of my coworkers!) who seem to believe it is some mystical process that requires praying to the bacteria gods and sleeping with aquarium gravel under your pillow.
A few notes from experience: nitrosomonas and nitrobacter species will generally operate and live within the liquid temperature range of water, they are able to go down to 0C and up to 100C without the whole population dying. They do operate best in the range of 72-86F (sorry for mixing units) with activity increasing with temperature up to the upper 80s where they will drop off slightly. You are also experiencing what many fish tank keepers experience after they have not regularly cleaned their tank of fish waste, the organic acids produced are buffering your pH down and lowering the efficacy of your bacteria's chemical reactions. In fish tanks we would prescribe regular water changes with KH buffered water, usually using sodium or calcium bicarbonate as the buffering agent but sometimes aragonite is also used in the form of "crushed coral" products. The crushed chalk at the end is a very similar idea.
This video has given me a lot to think about re: the nitrogen cycle process...
He is the fish

How is the finished product extracted? Do you just leave the barrel to react for a few days and collect in batches?

Great video Cody!
We want you to be successful Cody, I watch all your ads and like all your videos. Hopefully Youtube treat you well.
thanks for doing what you do. for some reason the way you present your experiments makes me remember the principles behind them.
FYI, assuming there's enough organic mater to feed on, if the bacteria don't have enough oxygen, they will start to break down NO3 to oxygen and nitrogen gass, where nitrogen would be lost to the atmosphere (this is actually exactly what we do when treating waste water), so if the goal is to collect nitrogen, ideally the bacteria should have plenty of oxygen and never feel the need to search for alternative sources of oxygen
good tip
Another thing to remember is that nitrifying bacteria like the ones in wastewater treatment plants are usually autotrophic meaning they need bicarbonates as their carbon source.
If you stabilized the pH with let's say sodium hydroxide the bacteria still wouldn't grow because they'd run out of carbon to make more of themselves
Hint: cheap alcohols are a great liquid carbon source ;)
@@stickerbeat Yep, in fish tanks we buffer with sodium or calcium bicarbonate, or aragonite which is a species of calcium carbonate. Reef tank keepers will even add liquid carbon sources like vodka, vinegar, or more formulated products to feed the bacteria and then use a protein skimmer to remove the bacteria directly from solution as a de-nitrification method.
This is such a cool concept that could have such an amazing use in the agricultural sector.
Out of all the piss buckets I've seen yours is the most advanced.
Knowing Cody, I was sitting on the edge of my seat, scared shitless he would take a little sip. Great video!
One of the old-school ways to get useful nitrates is to spray urine on a loose pile of straw. If done correctly, the surface area of the straw pile would host bacteria and evaporate the water and form nitrate crystals. These crystals could be collected by gently shaking. Further processing is needed for making gun powder. My understanding is that one of the scandinavian countrie's king required subjects to pay tax partially in saltpeter so this sort of operation was going on somewhere on every farm.
He did that AGES ago. One of his earlier attempts of making nitrate.
A long time ago he actually did exactly that in a video, and if I recall correctly he took the nitrate crystals and made gunpowder from them. Dude is a legend
I remeber that video, w recall
Hypothetically all this charcoal is going to be saturated with nitrate
Cody did exactly that, made actual powder from it and hand loaded a single rifle shell with it, so of course YT took the video down. This video is about the closest you can get to the original source material without being censored
Nice! I've always transferred fish filter media to jump start a new tank, but never for personal waste processing. 😅 I love seeing all the interesting things you develop.
People who do aquaponics often start the nitrogen cycle in their biofilters, before adding fish, using aged urine. If the bacteria are numerous and detoxifying ammonia before the fish are introduced, it is less likely for the fish to suffer or die from poisoning by their own wastes.
The last time I cycled in a fish tank, I used household ammonia, rather than having to let pee rot.
There are much better bacteria-starter products nowadays than human urine, especially into a system that people will be eating the output of. Human urine can contain all sorts of contaminants and pathogens.
Been watching you as long as I've had a youtube account and I take lots of inspiration from you in my projects! Thank you for the most amazing content I know
