Domain of Science - 2017-12-09
Biology is the subject that studies life in all its forms, from the simple cell through to all the animals that inhabit the planet. In this map I lay out the subject of biology and how all of the sub-disciplines are related to each other: microbiology, genetics, bioengineering, anatomy, physiology, medicine, neuroscience, ecology, zoology to name but a few. Biology spans the scales, from biophysics and biochemistry studying the basic elements of life, to the study of whole ecosystems and the environment. If there is one word that describes biology, it is complexity. There is a huge amount we still don’t understand about how life works, how it started and how it ended up with us. 3:07 kurzgesagt easter egg
I already knew that and my mind was blown after I figured out their reference. Love kurzgesagt and domain of science btw.
I noticed!!!
YES
@Domain of Science I saw the easter egg as wekk
Haha...i thought the same!
Can you do Map of Astronomy
Isn’t astrophysics a part of the map of physics
@The Machine Head NEWS FLASH; HE'S DEAD
Sophie Somerfeldt astrophysics and astronomy are interchangeable
@Someone i feel bad to say wooosh...
That’s just physics
Map of Psychology would be cool. Nice video anyways!
I would like a map of the humanities in general
Senpie you know that psychology’s definition is literally the science of behavior and mental processes
@Senpie what is it then? Not attacking you, just curious :)
@Roben Khoury honestly, I was just trolling as psychology is usually seen as a weak science. People didn't get it I guess
@Roben Khoury Psychology is traditionally seen as a social science but is also a science as it utilises the scientific method. You can find psychologists whose work resembles either domain
Map Of Philosophy por favor
While that is a good points, I think that mathematics doesn't use the classical scientific method either. Philosophy can be science without specifically using the scientific method
@Jules A Hm.... Never really thought about it that way! That makes sense!
That's probably true. But physics don't use the classical method either, so really what could we constitute it as? Math is the underlying structure that makes most science possible; for example, we theoretically think up atomic interactions without using the classical scientific method. Rather, we use the Socratic method; the same method used for philosophy, actually. So the point is that the classical scientific method is just a convention we use to teach budding young minds the methods of figuring out problems; ask a question, and figure out how to even answer the question. Science is a difficult term to concretely define.
Philosophy is a humanity not a science.
Si, you quiero.
3:01 - Hey, it's the Kurzgesagt duck! :)
Yeah Nice easter egg!
6:59 Fungi is not studied under botany. The study of fungi is called mycology considering plants an fungi fall under completely different phylogenetic kingdoms. Fungi is debatably more closely related to animals than plants, however plants and fungi are often incorrectly grouped together simply due to the fact that both are sessile.
Mycology is a branch of botany.
@X_FlameTastic_X true
If were looking at it from a lifestyle and structural perspective; fungi and plants are fundamentally different as most fungi are considered heterotrophs that decompose and feed on any organic matter they come in contact with while plants are autotrophs that can make their own food via photosynthesis.
Awesome job with this maps (And all the others too) :) Which will be the next map?
Map of Philosophy
Map of Engineering
Map of Psychology
Yes pleaaaase
map of economy,map of finance
I want Map of Psychology! Your video is so easy and fun!
Map of Philosophy please ! 🤩🤩🤩
Love the Kurzgesagt reference at 3:02
Can you do the map of astronomy next?
OMG yes! Thank you so much for putting the time and effort on doing this! Currently on my 1st year of uni in Biology and I wanted to become a biologist ever since I can remember :D It is a beautiful field just like every other natural sciences!
Amazing work, Dominic!
Same I am going into uni for Biology in September and can't wait. How are you liking the course so far
@Nudge | I'm not even in high school yet.
@Nudge I'm here!!
@Andrés Mendoza thank u so much!!
@Michael Loveday hey!! How'd it go?
Please make the map of biology next
how to make a ??
What?
Isn’t that the map we just watched?
@James Carmody woosh
I didn't understand 🤔
I saw that kurtzgesagt reference :)
Yakov Reznikov its great to see that another one had saw it😂😉
kurzgesagt*
Yakov Reznikov yeeeeees
I recognized the bird, too :)
hehe, nice easter egg of Kurzgesagt!
3:17 It's the Kurzgesagt bird! 👍
Danny Vasquez i see you’re a man of culture as well
Glad to find someone else who noticed it!
i NEED THIS FOR CHOOSING MY UNIVERSITY DEGREE
true
True
And me
true... but i is too late for me... I'm 36 already. I wish I had all this information before I had gone to college. QQ
The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
The map of Engineering
Love that map you have used in your epidemiology section appears to be a based on the board game Pandemic (was this a clever reference or just a coincidence?)
Very well spotted! I love pandemic and thought of it as soon as I had to come up with something for epidemiology. I played Pandemic Legacy season 1 and it was one of the most fun board game experiences I've had.
3:08 that's an interesting looking bird xD
TheVlp3r the bird is from kurzgesgat
Do a map of philosophy.
history of philosophy (because philosophy is in history already)
I've been waiting forever for this one. Although I'm biased by being a biochemist myself, he did an amazing job at bringing all the branches together in a smooth, non-confusing way! I would like to see a map of medicine or linguistics in the future.
Exactly!! It's very hard to represent such a large course of study so concisely
Kurzgesagt 🐦
chan yoon jun how do u even pronounce that name?
The Map of Engineering NEXT!
Nah, they are deeply connected. Something like civil engineering can be linked to geotechnical engineering, which in turn is connected to soil engineering, environmental engineering, from here we get to hydropower, than to energy supply, than to electronics, than to nanotech, than to materials engineering, than we returned to civil engineering and the circle is enclosed. You could easily map this together.
I got way too excited when you included the Kurzsgasagt bird
Kurzgesagt - in a NutShell 3:02
I think I found him on imgur too https://imgur.com/gallery/dtCnq
*Kurzgesagt
Mi Les 【≽ܫ≼】ᖫ✧WɅVΞ✧ᖭ
I know it is not a science but I would love to see a map of philosophy!
A different you-tuber made one.
Of course philosophy is science... actually the most basic
not science ? it is the base of all science
3:03 I have seen that bird before 🤔Kurzgesagt🤔😂
These videos are good but I have two minor criticisms of this one:
1. Structural biology is concerned with the structure of large macromolecules. Amino acids are all small molecules so they fall more under the purview of biochemistry. Your description is almost verbatim one of the sentences from the opening paragraph of the Wikipedia page on structural biology, but I don't think that's correct.
2. Biomedical engineering is the field that makes artificial organs and other medical devices. Biotechnology uses living organisms or their products for our purposes. Synthetic biology creates synthetic organisms and is closely related to biotechnology, but the latter two fields aren't closely related to the first.
This is arguing semantics
Which is important in science.
@Мики Ricky People using this argument in science, and more particularly in biology, is why people keep believing stupid things just because we are not careful with the semantics. If us, the scientists, are not careful with semantics, how is the rest of the world gonna properly understand how everything works? As an exemple, the "evolution is just a theory" infamous argument.
@Laura "why people keep believing stupid things just because we are not careful with the semantics".
I spent/mostly wasted lots of time debating with creationists, flat earthers, religious fundamentalists and the like. Nearly all of them have far deeper problem than using poorly defined words.
I think the key problem is believing an authority (such as holy scripture) more than observed evidences (i.e. observation and experiments). If a person believes that a scripture is always right, there is no way you can persuade him out of error that is asserted by the said scripture, however ridiculously and indefensibly.
@Laura Also, keeping well-defined semantics is often not possible. The blurred boundary between life and death, various subdisciplines in or even across disciplines are good examples.
For example, chemists used to believe that inorganic chemistry cannot be artificially converted into organic chemistry, until CO2 can be converted to organic molecules. Then they found more problems on keeping fields separate, such as organic molecules can be bond by metals. Very often, the more scientists discover, the more blurred inter-(sub)disciplinary boundaries become.
I love your maps and that kurzgesagt reference ;)
Once again, amazing work. Someday I'll buy all those posters and cover my apartment with them.
Eero Teppo Just sceeenshot and print out
I love these Maps so much, they are pure gold!
Philosophy I imagine is very tough to make but would be extremly awesome too
I think there'd be a big crevasse like in the physics map but between all the different knowledge philosophies
You forgot ETHOLOGY.
Not only ethology. There are no forensic biology, microbiology, virology...
Could you do map of psychology next plz
Map of psychology pls
YAAAAAS DO ONE ABOUT
PHILOSOPHY
Next we need a map of Electrical Engineering🤘
Map of Engineering?
A map of medicine would be great! ☺️
Map of engineering?
Just watched your ted talk and this immediately showed up in my recommendation list. Wonderful!
Kurzgesgat bird??
Can you do Map of Lingüistics or Engineering? That could be awesome!
Excellent video, but i thing some important fields are missing!! like sistematics, but as you say biology si very complex
Esteban Guerrero microbiology is missing too
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. I was waiting for this for so long
Finally :) The trilogy
Nice vid! Do one on geography!
Oh yeah yeah
but how?
Haha, I like how he pronounces evolution as EVIL-ILLUSION
First :)
you're so amazing dude!!!
