Misconceptions About the Universe

Can we see things travelling faster than light?

The expanding universe is a complicated place. During inflation the universe expanded faster than light, but that's something that actually happens all the time, it's happening right now. This doesn't violate Einstein's theory of relativity since nothing is moving through space faster than light, it's just that space itself is expanding such that far away objects are receding rapidly from each other. Common sense would dictate that objects moving away from us faster than light should be invisible, but they aren't. This is because light can travel from regions of space which are superluminal relative to us into regions that are subluminal. So our observable universe is bigger than our Hubble sphere - it's limited by the particle horizon, the distance light could travel to us since the beginning of time as we know it.

@The Reselling Butcher I don't think you need to have an observer for everything to exist.
If every living thing in the world went extinct tomorrow, would the whole universe cease to exist because no one is looking at it? What would cause it to disappear?

The Reselling Butcher - 2020-02-09

Roberto it could cease to exist in the way we perceive it yes it is possible how would we really know look at the double slit quantum mechanics experiment which proves observation changes outcomes! This has been scientifically proven

Small facts have you ever heard that what we see in the world with our eyes is not the tru nature of reality our brains make up what we see for survival reasons

Einstein: NOTHING can travel faster than light.
Space: I am NOTHING.......

Azazel Dreciare - 2020-02-18

@Gaz The brain is just gray matter and white matter composed of neurons firing. That rate of those neurons firing was already studied. That is what thought is.

Azazel Dreciare - 2020-02-18

@Gaz that tiny electrical impulse is your thought

badd.y - 2020-02-24

@Dannys998876 well the way you said it seemed pretty understandable, that's if it's a fraction of the actual depth of this. Anything could be understood, it's just the way in which you understand it is what changes the period of time you take to understand, gl understanding this.. 😂😂

Rodney Boehner - 2020-03-03

Veratasium is wrong on his claim on this video that we will be able to see light from an object beyond the Hubble sphere. Despite what he says, we will never see any object beyond the Hubble sphere. It's very simple. Light from that object travels at the speed of light. So from that object's perspective, we are receding away from that object faster than the speed of light, so that light will never catch up to us. Both frames of references, the objects and ours, must yield the same result.

While we can see the light from that object in the distant past when it was within the Hubble sphere, since it is no longer within the Hubble sphere since that time long ago, the light from that object will not be seen after it travels beyond the Hubble sphere. That's just simple special relativity.

Also, his basic presumption is wrong. If the expansion of space is accelerating, then the radius of the Hubble sphere will actually be shrinking—not expanding—so the light from an object beyond the Hubble sphere will never even catch up to the contracting Hubble sphere from our point of view. It's only if the expansion rate of the universe slows down or stops that the light from that distant object can catch up to the Hubble sphere. This video is just dead wrong.

We find out all this from not leaving Earth. interesting

G Guest - 2020-02-10

lol...Well thank-you Doug, but I think what a lot of people on Youtube fail to understand is that it is ok to disagree with somebody. It just doesn't have to turn into a name calling free-for-all the way it quite often does. Although I do write as thoughtfully as I can, I sometimes stand corrected on something I say. It happens. The one thing we must ALL agree on is to treat each other with respect and kindness, no matter how wrong we think somebody else is, or how right we think we are. The problem with Youtube is that is it mostly unmoderated, so some pretty outlandish things get posted sometimes, things that would never fly on Quora.

Thank-you for your views and insight.

Doug Overhoff - 2020-02-10

@G Guest You're right about some of theseYouTubers, and the 'immoderate' reactions that we sometimes see from them. So many people today are not able to handle having their views challenged, (I think the younger ones mostly), and they often become obnoxious and belligerent when faced with repudiation of their concepts. It's a defense mechanism they use, I suppose, because they aren't otherwise capable of Intelligent discourse; which, unfortunately, is not the norm that one encounters on here. You are obviously one of the all too rare exceptions, capable of expressing yourself adroitly and inoffensively. That was a pleasant and unexpected divergence from the usual response I've come to expect upon meeting someone who expresses contrary views, and it's appreciated. It gives one hope for the human race to see it, now and again.
Nice talking with you. Thanks, again, for your kind indulgence, and your rational and judicious responses. Peace!

G Guest - 2020-02-10

@Doug Overhoff Doug, I completely agree with you. I simply discuss the issues and leave personal things out of it. The one thing that a lot of people forget is, other people have just as much right to their opinion as we do to our own. It is through differing opinions and perspectives that we learn things. If we talk with someone that agrees 100% with everything we say, we learn nothing.

Feel free to message me anytime. I spend a lot of time on Youtube, quite often in the "space" section or the high-end stereo section. (Yes, I am one of "those guys"....)
Of course in the audio issues, I deal in facts and not snake-oil.

Take care.

Doug Overhoff - 2020-02-10

@G Guest One thing that I learned from being involved in competition, and in trying to progress in my skills, is that one learns far more from failure and mistakes than from one's successes. It's like you said, we don't learn so much from those with like opinions and similar knowledge, but from those who differ in that regard.
And, feel free to message me anytime, also. My time is spent on YouTube mostly in the political arena, and in religious/theological areas. But I have a wide range of subject matters that I follow, so it could be almost anything that catches my interest. But, science and space topics are among the areas that truly fascinate me; they are subjects that are constantly changing and updating, and there's always plenty more to learn. I'm anxious for the James Webb to see action, as I'm sure you must be, too. I can't imagine what we'll learn from its deployment.
Have a great day, and as I said, I have truly enjoyed the discussion. Peace and blessings.

27From the very beginning, your first ancestor sinned against me;

all your leaders broke my laws.

28That is why I have disgraced your priests;

I have decreed complete destruction for Jacob

and shame for Israel.

Instead of wondering about google you better suggest actual videos... so other people can reach them now and do not have to wait 5 years until google suggests them

Ristomatti Airo - 2020-01-01

Maybe you're just watching the personally interesting content faster than it's being created. At least for me it seems like that nowadays. Each day I get older and older videos as recommendations.

Jai Bellare - 2020-01-04

Daniel Smith - 2020-02-03

I watched this many times between 2014-2016 and it's suddenly recommended to me in 2020. Bizarre.

“God stretches out the heavens like a scroll.”

Klammeraffe - 2020-02-15

This is completly BS.
The guy talks about a light travel problem and seeing this Veritasium video clearly explains why there isn't any problem.

KarmaCop217 - 2020-02-20

Is that an actual line from the bible?

david graham - 2020-02-20

@KarmaCop217 , The Bible says God stretched out the heavens.
In Isaiah 34:4 it says he will roll them up like a scroll at some point in the future.
Isaiah 40:22 Says God stretched out the heavens like a canopy.
There are many alliterations in the Bible to God stretching out the heavens. Both the old, and new Testaments have these type of verses.
I watched an amazing video that explained how the process occurred during creation. It explains how originally light traveled at a rate much, much faster than it currently travels, and it did this using modern physics principles. I'll look to see if I can find it. If you're a Christian, you'll love watching this video.

david graham - 2020-02-20

Here's the link to the video. If you like it, and want other interesting videos concerning the science behind the verses in the Bible, I have a few others that are great, as well.

Yes it’s in the Bible in many places. Psalm 104:2 is my favorite, because light is directly involved.

Ok that explanation was real good

abhishek gakhar - 2019-08-01

I cant get my head wrapped around the fact that universe is infinite

Justin Wall - 2019-12-29

abhishek gakhar check out Dr. William Lane Craig’s explanation of the cosmological argument. He shows logically why the universe began in the finite past, which coheres with modern scientific discoveries.

abhishek gakhar - 2020-01-06

@Justin Wall i will....thanks

Justin Wall - 2020-01-06

abhishek gakhar he has some really amazing lectures on it as well as a short video explaining it

Heiko Kull - 2020-01-19

Dont bother. Infinite is human construct. What it even means. Just think of it... its something that is. Like u are.

Ortcelo - 2017-05-10

Note to self: don't watch videos about the universe when you're having an existencial crisis.

Kay Rulz - 2019-05-14

I think u should because then u may realize that we don't matter so we should live our small lives doing whatever the hell we want and f**k what the others think

Lol flat Earthers good for a few laughs . Especially when you ask them anything about physics !

shayan moosavi - 2019-05-13

Try to get them to explain what are the forces applying to a book on the table. They would say no force. It's in fact two forces with equal magnitude and opposite directions.

Their brain cells can't handle it if there's more than one force at play😂😂😂😂

In one of their videos one guy actually said that when a magnet pulls up a pin from the ground it defies gravity. He didn't know that electromagnetic force is much stronger.

Brandon LastName - 2019-04-29

I think the statement around 0:30 is misleading . When the universe formed, at around 10^-35th seconds the universe (the cosmological horizon) supposedly doubled 100 times by the time it was 10^-33 seconds old (according to Alan Guth). This was so fast that light couldn't travel from one side of the tiny universe (17 centimeters is one estimate) to the other. Today light can certainly travel 17 centimeters. The expansion rate of the universe during Inflation was vastly faster than today. Very distant objects are receding faster than the speed of light (space is expanding between them), but thats not the case between close objects. If you turn on a light switch the room gets light. That would not have happened at 10^-35th seconds. As long as the hubble parameter exceeds 0 there will be 2 points far enough from each other that they will recede faster than the speed of light. I just think its misleading to imply that everything is receding faster than light, and that todays recession speed is no different than when the universe formed.

Tom Dickinson - 2019-08-30

I highly doubt any of hat happened at all

Patrick Ireland - 2019-09-14

"that's not the case between close objects" Actually, the term is "gravitationally bound." Our entire galaxy is gravitationally bound, and so the space between the planets and stars in our galaxy is NOT increasing.

Joe Omundson - 2019-10-24

@Patrick Ireland I don't understand how this can be. Wouldn't the fabric of space be expanding equally everywhere? Gravity could still hold things together, but why wouldn't the space be increasing anyway?

tom mathew - 2019-11-20

There is something wrong with the explanation that we will be able to see light from a galaxy that is moving faster than light. If the observable universe starts going faster than the speed of light so will the galaxy beyond the observable horizon and so, in fact, you will never be able to see its light. The 'explanation' makes the mistake of unknowingly envisaging two separate parts of the universe and one telescoping into the other. This is obviously wrong.

Mitsuki - 2019-11-08

It's so amazing to think about that many stars we see in the nightsky might not even exist anymore.

Paul - 2019-06-04

It's to much for the mind to comprehend yet we keep trying to figure it all out.

Alejandro Vallejo - 2019-06-02

Well this kind of explains how in the name of hell we can see objects that are many more light years away than years our universe has lived.

Jack Mulder - 2020-01-04

Im not getting fat, im expanding within myself

eniking1 - 2019-03-17

There is no empirical way to proof the universe is infinite. This would not be called physics anymore but metaphysics.

Kavi Ramyead - 2019-07-24

@Kidz Bop 38 is Straight FIRE!! Actually it is believed that space is flat so if it is bounded it would be a torus, that is from our perspective it would look like a pac man game where you enter one edge to exit a the opposite (it's easy to see if you cut the torus to have a cylinder then cut the cylinder to have a rectangle). All of this is well explained in two books: The Wraparound Universe by J.P Luminet and The Hidden Reality by Brian Greene. There is also the interesting case of infinite repetition of portion of the universe because of the pigeonhole principles. After all, given a sufficient number of space and matter you could find multiple earths with exact same you arranged in the exact same way.

Kidz Bop 38 is Straight FIRE!! - 2019-07-24

@Kavi Ramyead yes that's a great point, and it's one I was aware of before I posted. I really want to read those books you mention (I'm an engineer with a basic understanding of some physics, but I'm not at the level to begin to understand advanced mathematics). With that being said, I still think we have limited information at this point to begin to know the shape of the universe. Saying it's flat or round seems a bit presumptious. I'm just suggesting how it could be boundless, not necessarily that it is.

Kavi Ramyead - 2019-07-24

@Kidz Bop 38 is Straight FIRE!! Sotware engineer too, I suppose we're all space geeks. You should definitely read Brian Greene, he's realy good at explaining. And for sure we don't know, it's just the current opinion based on the estimation of many variables.

Joaquín Pelle - 2019-10-17

A misconception there:

The fact that some time ago the universe was compressed in a single point is actually a misconception! It's a prediction of the standard cosmological model, which is based on the theory of general relativity. But we know for sure that it can't be true, because singularities can't exist in the universe. There are no infinite energy densities in the real world. What's going on is that general relativity stops being valid at sufficiently high energies. To make any further prediction a more comprehensive theory of gravity is needed, which is not available yet (probably a theory of quantum gravity). But it's important to keep in mind that the singularity is a flaw of the theory, not a feature of reality! We don't know how the universe was beyond the validity regime of general relativity, i.e. at the "first instants".

Never talk about infinity. It's depressing.

Don't worry, there's no such thing as actual infinities. They're logically impossible, undermining rationality.

@Mei Ge Space itself isn't an object. Its expansion isn't necessarily constrained by special relativity.

Mei Ge - 2019-04-23

@TheSeverian yet object within space are bound to it, space is only a relation of the objects within it

Mei Ge - 2019-04-23

@TheSeverian also its not about any absolute speed any object would have, it is about the speed of an object relative to another object

That means that we are expanding !
Everything around us is expanding at same rate so we don’t notice???

UnbornSun - 2020-03-08

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the space between the Hubble sphere and the light of the galaxy observed also be expanding faster then the speed of light making it not visible to us?

you cant use things things you dont understand like 'infinity' to prove something else that you also dont understand
