Follow us to PBS Space Time: https://youtu.be/GcfLZSL7YGw And Eons: https://youtu.be/pk213XSSktQ ↓↓↓ More origin of life info and sources below ↓↓↓ The origin of life is one of the most important mysteries in all of science. When did life begin? How did life first evolve from chemistry? Where did life get started? In some primordial soup or somewhere else? Let’s journey back to the origin of life, as best as we know it, from the RNA world do the last universal common ancestor of everything alive today. Don’t miss our next video! What do we want?
TIME TRAVEL!
When do we want it?
IRRELEVANT!
@Audrey Doyle 😆
@Dan Ryan right, but good luck getting close to light speeds 🤷
@Agnes Mina a couple hundred years ago nobody could have imagined modern technology. Two hundred years from now? Who knows what's possible?
@Dan Ryan I mean, that's true. The issue is enough energy and we seem to be bumping into thermodynamical limits on energy density even just with fossil fuels :(
@sofaking onmynuts you cant travel back in time. And even if you could it would literally make the universe not exist.
Can't give you an exact date but I know it was on a Monday.
It ends on a Thursday.
If you're going off Genesis, the first day was a Sunday. It would take another couple thousand years for Christians to move the date
At 213pm
@mikebe41 Is that UTC or Eden local time? And was it standard or Daylight Saving?
You heretic! Everybody knows it was on a Thursday.
THEY’RE PUTTING CHEMICALS IN THE WATER THAT MAKES THE FRICKING CELLS GAY
I could see that. Its all an experiment
I knew it! My man boobs are proof positive.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!
@Stan Smith I'm doing my part by being the big gay
Niiiice
biologists failed to consider the possibility of primordial tacos
You’re a genius.
@TheBeaverBabas what about pizza
Crazy Dave would like that.
This isn't going to sit well with the Kentucky school board.
2fast2block lol go back to high school dude
2fast2block how is it like being a religious nutjob?
@A McSween "I have been labeled as an Intelligent Design (ID) proponent. I am not. I do not know how to use science to prove intelligent design although some others might. I am sympathetic to the arguments on the matter and I find some of them intriguing, but the scientific proof is not there, in my opinion. So I prefer to be free of that ID label." - James Tour
@Jeremy Reid the video you linked explains Miller's primordial soup in detail... Ironic.
@PaulNovi did you miss the part about base gases being mixed together and forming the chemicals that make up rna? It's the one with the animated gas tanks and bubbles. It's about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Comment section was surprisingly civil. Good job
Except for the 'russian bot' who keeps popping in with their conspiracy theories, poor little guy is probably lonely
And the anti-red state rhetoric.
Screw you !! Haha just kidding.
If RNA is GUAC how do you get it without avocados being there first.
Checkmate atheists 😤😤😤
@Eddie Alfaro checkmate your mom
Cute
Rewatch minute 6-ending
Mitochondria : THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL!!! (⚡Thunder Sounds⚡) 😂😂😂
Ha ha Johra Akter :D
Would that be the ooglederm or the chocoderm in the picture? 1:39
Did all these people go to the same "talking with your hands" school?
“Must work to avoid decay” so people who gave up are already dead.... depressing...
Use it or lose it
Actually, it is the germ line which survives. Every single living thing alive can directly trace it's germ line to our Last Universal Common Ancestor. That is what I call 'One finger up to Entropy.'
“As a biologist I can tell you this is much harder than it sounds”
Exactly this is not really science
They dont know take it out of the biology books miller and rnA no we cant make rna in the lab its brought in to the lab and nothing happens james tour please blah blah oh boy
I hope no one takes it as a deep explanation, it's obviously harder, but this video is a great overview
Chemical soup, served up hot and fresh. Made with gnarly space ingredients.
The "It's Okay To Be Smart" guy looks like diet Johnny Knoxville.
Heil Wirklichkeit yessss 😂 i was thinking the same thing
This is by far the most ambitious crossover ever
God is the wisest being.

@It's Okay To Be Smart 😂😂😂
Erik Knol most ambitious crossdresser ever*
Next crossover with Kurzgesagt
I’ve watched this video several times. Love it. The perfect compliment to a biology course I’m listening to from great courses. Keep up the great work!
can someone cut the "THE POWER HOUSE OF THE CELL" Scene and turns it into either GIF or Video
1:28 "Regular non-life stuff can easily become cool life stuff."
Me: * looks at homeworks *
Gosh no :(
"why"
Is surely the question for science
"Logic" is fundamental to science which is a part of broader subject "philosophy".
Amazing video I wished my school would play something like this :)
THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL!
The mitochondriooooon jk
@dyslexius maximus eagles chirp... that was a hawk
@Brenin Bergeron cool thanks didn't know that
@Nicholas Siena Can't really tell. Its either the ooglederm or the chocoderm. 1:39
They didn't sleep on that one 😋👍
Short answer... God.
... Oh, I meant ignorant answer.
Circumflêx ÂÂÂ i know these people make up 90% of humanity.
JokeR xxx and it’s down to the 10% people to save them and themselves like right now they pray while the 10% are developing vaccines and begging them to wash their hands
Circumflêx ÂÂÂ i am pretty sure its 90%
JokeR xxx what’s your point?
Circumflêx ÂÂÂ no point, just saying.
We do know where life started, in France, Q showed captain Picard.
The take-away words of the day: "could have"
I know what you mean.
I guess he could have said "this is our best understanding based on the available scientific evidence but our understanding could change as new evidence is discovered." Or something like that.
I love me some PBS Spacetime! I seriously can’t get enough of that channel. Awesome collab, great video!
T-shirt I want:
I struggle against entropy, therefore I am.
Holy crap! Me also!
Someone please make this
Me too
This looks like a job for... VISTAPRINTS!!!!
I want the "I struggle against entropy, therefore I am." one too.
But the question is.
How do living matter came out of non-living
The most important step (from organic molecules to self-replicating RNA) still seems to be completely in the dark. It might have happened near that underwater vents, sure, but how you get from Micelles and energy to RNA hasn't been touched on at all in this video.
I mean, it's a great video and explains a lot, so I don't want to criticize the video per se but it makes it seem as if we basically know the main steps, which doesn't seem true at all.
Also why isn't Abiogenesis happening right now? Or is it?
@sue lane what do you mean "cruelty"? Are you going by human psychology of the what is called cruel? Because their is nothing cruel in nature at all.
@Pound4Pound Hi, maybe you should ask David Attenborough...or at least watch his programmes. And he doesn't focus on violence, he just describes nature as it is.
I do accept a God principle, but I am loathe to attribute the darker side of nature to a benign Creator.
Of course, in human societies the definition of cruelty varies greatly, though pain and suffering is the same.
Ah
How long a video did you want it to be?
Pound4Pound
*sigh
I see you brought along a bit of god to fill in all these gaps we have here
Well, go on then
Squirt a little there.....also a dash there....
Thats why this is just a Theory. No one knows how RNA synthesis happened before the first appearance of an RNA polymerase ribozyme... This theory if proven could be what scientist need to prove evolution. But it's almost impossible to happen on it's own. If you read up on this theory, (it is so Impossible), scientist believe there was another "Compound before" RNA. This compound was similar to RNA but MUCH simpler containing catalytic activity and the capability to store information. (Basically it wouldn't have needed an enzyme) But that compound has yet to be discovered and most likely will never be discovered because they wouldn't leave a fossil record.
So if you believe in God, keep believing!
Life: " Anything that can act independently irrespective of its sorrounding or external influence" .
Robots could be classified as life by that, give a year or two
Nothing “acts independently.”
@S C many things can
So stars, black holes, and other celestial objects are technically life?
"Life probably started here ...." @9:41 ... a nice nod to Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick with the image of the monolith! 👍😄😄 That would be 2001:A Space Odyssey
The minute I saw that I was like "Is that Zagadka?" and took to the comments to see if anyone got that too. Now I can die smiling
Hi, also cells probably arose twice from a common metabolism which LUCA would have had. As it is bacterial cells which form durable cysts, then it is possible that life on Earth could been spreading out through the Universe for at least 3.7 billion years. Imagine that. It would only take one chemotroph to find suitable conditions and colonise a moon or exoplanet.
"Thanks" for contradicting one of the most basic explanations that we need to give all the time, that "evolution" and the origin of life are different things. Even if ultimately one can use the same word/label, there are fundamental differences, even if there are also some possible analogies like possibly there being a "proto-natural-selection" with "proto-organisms" with the higher "almost fertility" having more "almost copies", eventually reaching into pretty much a decent copy, and starting the process as it's characterized for all extinct and extant actual life. :-/
GUACamole created life confirmed XD
Guac is life! ✊😆
still, how do the parts motivate to create closed systems this still does not explain how life began maybe how it may have begun there are too much assumption and missing evidence
How to make life
You will need :
Soup
A ton of Time
Lightning
Cream of mushroom soup
I've heard a more recently rising theory that life is likely to have begun in a landlocked pool that undergoes cycles of dry and wet periods. Can you compare this with the more well known hydro vent theory that you presented in this video?
Did he say “Ribo-SIMEs”?
1:56 I love this!! It's like a photo album of a family with a touch of Harry Potter magic. Love you guys🤗🤗🤗
My cells: "We serve the Soviet Union."
Life: needs cells
Androids: am i a joke to you?
Ali Ebrahim Mr. Data, Engage
1:40 - THE MICROBE DIAGRAM!!!!!
2:07 omg where do I get her shirt??!!!!
RNA looks pretty delicious.
This channel gives me life.
Alan Telemishev same
Alan Telemishev no it's the RNA that gave us life
10:16 made me laugh way too hard
3:04 hey Joe, u believe that a time machine could take u in past.
so
guac = life ?
Yes, Guacamole = Life
That sound, "the powerhouse of cell"😂😂
“Life is just a thing that happens,”
I add: "obviously" We know for fact life happens...because we are alive.
4:15 bobble head starts talking here
points at how complicated and awesome life is
Me: This is amazing! But i likr this
points at dying and going to an anime world
THE POWER HOUSE OF THE CELL
😂 Gets me every time.
It's Okay To Be Smart - 2018-04-11
The origin of life… it's a big question. Maybe the biggest.
Head to PBS Space Time and Eons and watch the rest of this collab!
Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-21
@Michael Richardson james tour and one strange rock series its a start
Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-21
@Michael Richardson yes but all galaxies have the black hole inits center for the machine of all galaxies quasars are early galaxies with massive black holes runnimg these huge objects
T.J. Cunningham - 2020-03-21
@Tom Nowocin Whether science can create life in a lab has nothing to do with atheism. If Miller convinced you there was no God based on a job-related scientific matter, that's on you.
You think if they created life in a lab, hell, a full human fetus, from clay, it world disprove a god existence? It wouldn't.
T.J. Cunningham - 2020-03-21
@Tom Nowocin Show me the science text that teaches life is easy and throughout the universe. It isnt taught.
Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-22
@T.J. Cunningham ask there teachers ask there friends ask there parents and ask what the professors think whats there answer oh your not the person who always says i dont believe this is that cause i say so no matter how secular humanism atheism is everywhere you havnt noticed social beliefs in young people its in every highschool and university from harvard berckley yale etc
