The origin of life is one of the most important mysteries in all of science. When did life begin? How did life first evolve from chemistry? Where did life get started? In some primordial soup or somewhere else? Let’s journey back to the origin of life, as best as we know it, from the RNA world do the last universal common ancestor of everything alive today.

The origin of life… it's a big question. Maybe the biggest.

Head to PBS Space Time and Eons and watch the rest of this collab!

Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-21

@Michael Richardson james tour and one strange rock series its a start

Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-21

@Michael Richardson yes but all galaxies have the black hole inits center for the machine of all galaxies quasars are early galaxies with massive black holes runnimg these huge objects

T.J. Cunningham - 2020-03-21

@Tom Nowocin Whether science can create life in a lab has nothing to do with atheism. If Miller convinced you there was no God based on a job-related scientific matter, that's on you.

You think if they created life in a lab, hell, a full human fetus, from clay, it world disprove a god existence? It wouldn't.

T.J. Cunningham - 2020-03-21

@Tom Nowocin Show me the science text that teaches life is easy and throughout the universe. It isnt taught.

Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-22

@T.J. Cunningham ask there teachers ask there friends ask there parents and ask what the professors think whats there answer oh your not the person who always says i dont believe this is that cause i say so no matter how secular humanism atheism is everywhere you havnt noticed social beliefs in young people its in every highschool and university from harvard berckley yale etc

Agnes Mina - 2020-02-26

@Dan Ryan right, but good luck getting close to light speeds 🤷

Dan Ryan - 2020-02-26

@Agnes Mina a couple hundred years ago nobody could have imagined modern technology. Two hundred years from now? Who knows what's possible?

Agnes Mina - 2020-02-26

@Dan Ryan I mean, that's true. The issue is enough energy and we seem to be bumping into thermodynamical limits on energy density even just with fossil fuels :(

Vablo - 2020-02-27

@sofaking onmynuts you cant travel back in time. And even if you could it would literally make the universe not exist.

Simple Things - 2019-06-26

Can't give you an exact date but I know it was on a Monday.

Doxie Lain - 2019-07-11

It ends on a Thursday.

If you're going off Genesis, the first day was a Sunday. It would take another couple thousand years for Christians to move the date

I am sympathetic to the arguments on the matter and I find some of them intriguing, but the scientific proof is not there, in my opinion. So I prefer to be free of that ID label." - James Tour

nic spits - 2020-03-18

@Jeremy Reid the video you linked explains Miller's primordial soup in detail... Ironic.

nic spits - 2020-03-18

@PaulNovi did you miss the part about base gases being mixed together and forming the chemicals that make up rna? It's the one with the animated gas tanks and bubbles. It's about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Comment section was surprisingly civil. Good job

Actually, it is the germ line which survives. Every single living thing alive can directly trace it's germ line to our Last Universal Common Ancestor. That is what I call 'One finger up to Entropy.'

Tom Nowocin - 2020-03-17

They dont know take it out of the biology books miller and rnA no we cant make rna in the lab its brought in to the lab and nothing happens james tour please blah blah oh boy

eidiazcas - 2020-03-20

I hope no one takes it as a deep explanation, it's obviously harder, but this video is a great overview

"Logic" is fundamental to science which is a part of broader subject "philosophy".

David Last name - 2020-03-19

But the question is.
How do living matter came out of non-living

John xantoro - 2019-04-08

The most important step (from organic molecules to self-replicating RNA) still seems to be completely in the dark. It might have happened near that underwater vents, sure, but how you get from Micelles and energy to RNA hasn't been touched on at all in this video.

I mean, it's a great video and explains a lot, so I don't want to criticize the video per se but it makes it seem as if we basically know the main steps, which doesn't seem true at all.

Also why isn't Abiogenesis happening right now? Or is it?

Pound4Pound - 2020-02-27

@sue lane what do you mean "cruelty"? Are you going by human psychology of the what is called cruel? Because their is nothing cruel in nature at all.

sue lane - 2020-02-28

@Pound4Pound Hi, maybe you should ask David Attenborough...or at least watch his programmes. And he doesn't focus on violence, he just describes nature as it is.
I do accept a God principle, but I am loathe to attribute the darker side of nature to a benign Creator.
Of course, in human societies the definition of cruelty varies greatly, though pain and suffering is the same.

KEN BEE - 2020-03-01

Ah
How long a video did you want it to be?

KEN BEE - 2020-03-01

Pound4Pound
*sigh
I see you brought along a bit of god to fill in all these gaps we have here

Well, go on then
Squirt a little there.....also a dash there....

Zach Lyons - 2020-03-02

Thats why this is just a Theory. No one knows how RNA synthesis happened before the first appearance of an RNA polymerase ribozyme... This theory if proven could be what scientist need to prove evolution. But it's almost impossible to happen on it's own. If you read up on this theory, (it is so Impossible), scientist believe there was another "Compound before" RNA. This compound was similar to RNA but MUCH simpler containing catalytic activity and the capability to store information. (Basically it wouldn't have needed an enzyme) But that compound has yet to be discovered and most likely will never be discovered because they wouldn't leave a fossil record.

So if you believe in God, keep believing!

Kabura Waruthi - 2019-12-20

The minute I saw that I was like "Is that Zagadka?" and took to the comments to see if anyone got that too. Now I can die smiling

sue lane - 2020-01-12

Hi, also cells probably arose twice from a common metabolism which LUCA would have had. As it is bacterial cells which form durable cysts, then it is possible that life on Earth could been spreading out through the Universe for at least 3.7 billion years. Imagine that. It would only take one chemotroph to find suitable conditions and colonise a moon or exoplanet.

Petitio Principii - 2018-12-23

"Thanks" for contradicting one of the most basic explanations that we need to give all the time, that "evolution" and the origin of life are different things. Even if ultimately one can use the same word/label, there are fundamental differences, even if there are also some possible analogies like possibly there being a "proto-natural-selection" with "proto-organisms" with the higher "almost fertility" having more "almost copies", eventually reaching into pretty much a decent copy, and starting the process as it's characterized for all extinct and extant actual life. :-/
