it's not a NurdRage video if it doesn't have something carsonogenic

Jonas Strzyz - 2017-04-12

+antiswatt3 even argon

Myfanwy94 - 2017-10-06

Argon37 is carcinogenic

AYAN DAS - 2018-08-18

Your spelling is a carcinogen.

Maggie P - 2018-12-01

Human anatomy is so complex it gives itself cancer just by existing for long enough.

bigrockets - 2019-02-12

Bill Carson is the only thing that's "carsonogenic"

NurdRage - 2017-04-08

I'll show how to make sodium magnesium oxide as well as isolate sodium metal itself in an upcoming video.

Freedom Fighter - 2018-06-28

Man I got lot to learn.

Zakrana Epsilon - 2018-10-24

In Other Video! For Dealing With Peroxide! Any Way To Make Hydrogen Peroxide from Those Explosive Ether Compounds?

bigrockets - 2019-02-12

@Quimica Ciencia Dud? perhaps you meant dude? lmao

Psychaotix2001 - 2019-03-14

Looking back at this video now from 2019 after the Great Sodium Experiment you've done and it's interesting to see that you had the basics there. You had dioxane for the separation, the Magnesium-Sodium aggregate as well, and you boiled off the dioxane for purity. So I really have to ask you NR. While filming this video, did you ever see the smallest amount of silver that gave you the "Oh that's funny..." moment that often heralds a scientific breakthrough. Oh, and it truly is a breakthrough, the Great Sodium Experiment. For the first time, highly pure sodium metal is available to the amateur chemist in significant quantities without major expenditure or vessel failures.

Torrey Stegall - 2020-02-28

@Psychaotix2001 , sodium isn't hard to get for most amateurs anymore. Here is a listing selling it to anybody and everybody in the US at a decent price.

dutstinroach - 2017-04-08

i would like to see an alkaloid extraction from plant material :P

NGC1433 - 2017-04-29

I believe a bunch of alkanoids live in my neighborhood.

Maggie P - 2018-12-01

@Vimeslgospare Cyanide isn't tempting for dummies to eat tho

Hannes A. - 2019-07-16

@NurdRage could you extract Dimethyltryptamine from Phalaris arundinacea?

Ddrenzo - 2019-12-25

Curcumin from turmeric.

retired meme - 2020-01-16

@NurdRage tropane alkaloids from datura plants

hamza B - 2017-04-08

-Warning : You're gonna die doing this

SebastianScarlet - 2017-04-08

I'm fully convinced with all of your "synthesis from household items" stuff you're going to show us how to make meth for cheap someday.

TimeMaster - 2018-07-08

Just drink more coffee🤣🤣🤣

KittyCow - 2018-07-28

meth is cheap to begin with, $350 an oz for long lasting adderal? Anybody who wants to use meth isnt going to be limited by the cost factor

Maggie P - 2018-12-01

@Murad Beybalaev Weed is illegal in about half of America.
You can't smoke it and can't have it.
In 49 of 50 states it's illegal to smoke in public. You're typically only allowed to smoke it in your home or home of a friend, or you're breaking the law.
It's not a life-ruiner anymore to get caught with, but it's not alcohol or tobacco legal.

Murad Beybalaev - 2018-12-01

@Maggie P, have you ever been bitten by a bureaucrat?

BackYard Science 2000 - 2019-11-11

@Murad Beybalaev , It is painfully obvious to everyone that you either don't know what you are talking about, or you're just trolling. You have been proven wrong on many levels.

Nelson Pena - 2017-04-09

You might be able to make dioxane...
But only Italians know how to make DioCane.

airwolf28 - 2017-04-08

What?!! No Gary the bug??

Robert Baruch - 2017-04-09

The reincarnated Gary makes an appearance at 5:03.

Benoît Geslain - 2017-04-08

I've been watching your videos for a few months now, still don't understand anthing about what you are doing but I can't stop watching.

John Wick - 2017-04-08

Why is dioxane the major product and not the di/tri ethylenglycol?

NurdRage - 2017-04-08

Once you've joined two glycols the ends have a much higher probability finding each other than finding a third glycol molecule. So they cyclize at a higher rate, then the dioxane boils off and drives the reaction forward.

Edit: massively blundered the wording, hopefully fixed it now

John Wick - 2017-04-08

Oh I see now, thank you!

Nixola97 - 2017-04-08

Well thank you Youtube, for notifying me this video exists ~3 hours after I watched it.

DoingStupidStuff - 2017-04-08

Could you use lithium or potassium metal in this? If so what if any changes would you need to make?

falconmick - 2017-04-08

... why do I watch every one of your videos.... I only did chemistry in high school so this goes right over my head

falconmick - 2017-04-19

Spunkey Doodle same, I've replaced all of that stuff with other stuff I've learnt that's more tailored for my field of work

Sporkabyte - 2017-04-19

Spunkey Doodle I don't know what school you went to, but I took AP Chemistry and even that didn't get into organic. Organic is a sophomore college class

Rynabunny - 2017-06-21

Ah. I took A-level chemistry (the basic UK standard for 16-17s) and we were taught organic chemistry. I don't doubt that high-school science and maths are usually easier in the US though >w0

ReaK - 2017-06-25

Everything to do with metals

ReaK - 2017-06-25

Ryna Lau I am located in Australia & each year I went to science extension, we were taught organic, then inorganic to give us a mix of the types of chemistry.

Morlanius - 2017-04-08

Looking forward to the peroxides video as this is a big concern for me recently.

fburton8 - 2017-04-08

Next time, dioxin... :P

AllChemystery - 2017-04-09

so when can we expect to see the pyrimethamine video?

Luke Luke - 2017-04-08

G'Day Nurdrage, I enjoy all your videos ,I have decided I must dollars to your patreon account, I feel you're description & mannerisms is what we need , I watched many your videos, this video & narration SPOT ON ,

NurdRage - 2017-04-08

Why thank you for your kind words!

ReaK - 2017-04-08

Antifreeze tastes nice, my famous last words. Cos ethylene glycol is tasty but poisonous. 😋

Rip Sumrall - 2017-04-08

But how do you get it to chooch if it's in a vice?

ReaK - 2017-04-09

Use a Canadian peso to get the pixies dancing in the wall to fix it. But you'll need a rectumfryer to make sure the pixies are going one way.

Žan Pekošak - 2017-04-29

Actually here is a tradition if we want to make water frezee proof we add just enough antifreeze to make it sweet. But you need to try only a little drop.

SigEpBlue - 2017-04-08

Great work, though I don't envy you having to clean all that glassware afterward. :)

HMS Illustrious - 2017-04-08

Base bath

The Pope - 2017-04-08

Can this dioxane stop time?

Jon - 2017-04-08

you commie

Gary Cazzell - 2017-04-08

Lol

CrismaFire - 2017-04-08

at first I thought it read how to make dioxin which is one of my favorite chemicals. Dioxane will have to do

Martin of Gliwice - 2017-04-08

Love the amount of content produced recently! It doesn't need to be great, any kind of applied chemistry is good.

Edit: great in "greatly innovative" sense. Pyrimethamine, exotic thermite and stuff. Simple organic and inorganic stuff is also a lot of fun to watch.

NurdRage - 2017-04-08

thanks!

pharmdiesel - 2018-11-06

Sir:
This is really good and commendable work. You have tied this together very nicely with Na metal production. In my eyes and opinion you have brought back the respect that the "Amateur Chemist" deserves. After all, some of the greatest discoveries were made by individuals investigating matter and nature just exactly like this. Bravo!

ElementalMaker - 2017-04-29

Absolutely AWESOME Nurdrage! having tried the same thing with tetralin unsuccessfully, I am so happy to see a solvent that works!

Martin Heermance - 2017-05-05

I'm curious how you dispose of the side products like the acetaldehyde. Do you have a way to render them harmless, or do you use a disposal service?

Wayne Moore - 2017-07-02

Acetaldehyde is a useful chemical. Precursor to a lots of things.

Pietro Tettamanti - 2017-10-25

Wayne Moore he said that he wouldn't use it. I theink that he'll polymerize it with NaOH and then pour it down the drain, since the polymer is harmless.

Iam Observer - 2018-01-09

Thanks Nurdrage I've been keeping an eye on you since day one! it's a passion for me now aswell

Eric Davis - 2017-04-25

<3 science videos! Keep up the great work!

Tom's Lab - 2017-04-08

Did anyone else think the shot at 3:34 looked like chemplayer did it?

Astral Chemistry - 2017-04-08

Kind of. For the total chemplayer feeling, the ants where missing :D.

widar28 - 2017-04-09

Nice video! I'm looking forward to your ether storage video. Peroxides in my ether are something that concern me too. Can you tell how much of a problem this is with MTBE?

Marc Nielsen - 2017-05-06

Will it be possible to dry it with molecular sieves A5, bought them by mistake. So would be nice to use them on something.

MrJake292007 - 2017-10-03

Marc Nielsen you really need A3 sieves to have the 3 ångstrom pores that will trap water and not the dioxane.

ProSurviver - 2017-04-12

HELL YEAH YOU GOT A SPONSOR!!

texasdee slinglead - 2017-04-29

I'm going to have make a plumber channel , the intersection of chemistry, biology, physics , and tight wad customers. good times

Cleetus - 2017-04-08

Hey nurd rage can you make a proper video, on diethyl ether from starter fluid ? is fractional distillation really the way ? Kind regards
/\o/\

Johnpao215 - 2017-04-11

Dioxane. You really like to live dangerously, huh? :))

Raihiar - 2017-04-09

Hi!
I wanted to ask a few quick questions :)
are crown-ethers byproducts here? and if so, could you tweak the reaction to yield more of them or a specific one?

Terry lick - 2018-08-03

brilliant as always. love how you are clear and explain it will detail. science excellent for scientific research and development and education purposes only. it's amazing how some just react slightly and some act violently. science. i wish i done more with it in school. then saying that i have learnt more through this excellent channel 👍

crshna ram - 2017-04-11

I'm your new subscriber.Grant Thompson the king of Random sent me.

ProSurviver - 2017-04-12

yeah this advanced shit is nothing compared to burning liquid propane lol jk not really

J H - 2020-04-09

Did you ever make a video on dealing with peroxides in ether solutions? I have some peroxide test strips that I think should work as a quick qualitative test (they test for "peroxides", not specifically just hydrogen peroxide).

Fry Pan - 2019-06-03

Your so lacking on the details regarding amounts that need to be mixed. Can you use moles? and list the name of the reaction?

user21XXL - 2017-05-08

@NurdRage can i dry dioxane by refluxing it with Mg metal? Could i get anhydrous dioxane that way?

Mexi Chemia - 2017-05-19

Almost 666K subs!! What

Quimica Ciencia - 2017-04-10

Amazing :)

frank Escalante - 2017-07-22

Question: how much dioxane was produce relative to the starting materials?

ryan abcdefg - 2017-04-11

would pumping in an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon work for preventing reaction over time?

TheOrganicartist - 2017-04-12

keep up the awesome work, i love your videos.

ecstasy.apostasy - 2019-02-02

This must be how you figured out that dioxane can be used as a solvent for sodium.

omNomios - 2017-04-09

I get the need for multiple income streams but almost EVERY youtube channel I follow has jumped on board this Great Courses affiliate program.
I become a patreon so I don't have to see ads, I signed up to youtubeRED so I don't have to see ads.

NurdRage - 2017-04-09

Sorry about that. If you'd like i can send back a full refund on patreon. Just send me a message through patreon. No hard feelings.

Humberto Castro - 2017-04-09

What do you do for a living? Are you a researcher, chemistry tech, etc... I would really love to know.

TheMemes OfYourDreams - 2017-04-11

what university do you teach chemistry at?

CoxTH - 2017-04-08

Shouldn't pretty much any acid work as a catalyst for the reaction?

NurdRage - 2017-04-08

Sulfuric acid works particularly well because it doesn't boil off and get lost.

Martin of Gliwice - 2017-04-08

CoxTH Phosphoric or polyphosphoric acid may be good as well. But they are somewhat more corrosive to glass. Shouldn't be a big problem at this temperature, though. Other acids are probably rather impractical for such reaction due to cost and availability (pTsOH), reactivity and low boiling point (HCl, HBr, HI), associated dangers (perchloric acid) or simply weakness of said acid (acetic, oxalic). In most cases including mentioned ones, there is a combination of factors making them unsuitable, for example acetic acid is weak, low boiling and forms esters.

Big Love Bully Farm LLC - 2017-08-19

How do I dispose of my unneeded by-products and chems.

yaklin104 - 2017-05-01

I've got plenty of Nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, can I use that instead of sulfuric acid?

user21XXL - 2017-05-06

best case scenario with nitric acid is a lot of toxic gases and your glassware scattered around the lab, worst case: there is no lab.
