Advanced Tinkering - 2022-06-13
I managed to increase the yield of my cesium production to 90 %. Which is just awesome! This is the most cesium I have ever made in one batch. The Cesium will be used for a future video with Elias from Elias experiments: https://www.youtube.com/c/EliasExperiments Do you have any questions or suggestions? I would like to hear them in the comments! If you want, you can join my patreon to help me working on my projects. All posts will be public, so you can participate without paying. https://www.patreon.com/AdvancedTinkering
In addition to being excited to see what you do with it, I also have nostalgia from my own work with cesium. I only needed mg of it though. Seeing big tubes of it sloshing around is powerful bait.
Did you work with cesium professionally or as a hobby? And what was the cesium used for?
@Advanced Tinkering Professionally, to make photocathodes.
Wow that flame shower when removing the flask scared me. :D Very nice Video, and I am really happy you were abel to increase the yield so much! I can't wait for our experiments!
Elias and Advanced Tinkering collab, probably the most excited I've been for a collab for a while now since Elias is planning on doing some crazy stuff like making n-butyllithium. I also wonder if you could possibly improve yield by using lithium powder, obviously it probably wouldn't do much since the lithium is molten anyways but it possibly could as there would be more surface area and so the reaction would go faster (possibly even thermite-like similar to the magnesium-NaOH thermite which would not be good if it does, you'd have a thermite making cesium)
...excellent video! congrats on your success of such a greater yield! you are obviously getting much more experienced and comfortable. thats what is making these videos so great. Thank you for the perfect explinations, it really helps the lay person like myself.
Hello I am new to the metal elements and I will be ordering some Cesium Metal Element in April. I've found a good supplier for Cesium Metal and the other metal elements. I enjoy watching the videos and thank you for being here
Sehr starkes video
Awesome video!!!
Thank you!
...90%+ !!!! congrats!!!
Wonder if there are some pretty cesium metal complexes 🤔
I know you said it's low purity, but I think you had a lot less oxide in this one, it's wetting the glass a lot less and it's keeping the shiny surface better.
I wonder if it'd be worth plugging it in future inside a "glovebox", just a taped on bag with a hole in it to let it vent.
Yes, I meant lower purity compared to my redistilled vial from this video: https://youtu.be/budLy8ll8Bw
This cesium will be used in experiments anyways. In a future run I will redistill it and seal it directly under vacuum like I did in the video above. That way there is even less exposure to any impurities and oxygen.
does cesium react with mineral oil? could it bit an option to have a small amount of mineral oil in the receiving flask to isolate the cesium from oxygen for easier take-out?
It does not react with the mineral oil but with oxygen and water dissolved in the mineral oil. So it's not an option for high purity vials. But we will use it to protect it while removing small amounts for the experiments.
Awesome, thanks! I'm fully satisfied :)
Lithium is weird stuff, I never knew there was a metal that you could cut with a knife like that!
It's also used as a (disputed) antidepressant. And it's an awesome Nirvana song :) <-this I already knew ;)
AFAIK lithium is used as a mood stabilizer, not an antidepressant (there is a subtle difference), and it is very effective, there is no (scientific) dispute.
I wouldn't recommend using a metal kf clamp like you have on glass. From my experience in industry we only ever used those clamps when both ends of the kf connection were metal. I recommend the clamps made of wood or some soffit material with multiple thumb screws. This lowered the chance of breaking the glass
Love your vids! What is your cost per gram of cesium?
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that you enjoy the videos.
It depends. If you only factor in the cost of the cesium chloride and lithium, it's a few dollar/Euro per gram. But if you consider the time it takes me and the price for other materials like the still and oven, it gets more expensive.
@@AdvancedTinkering Thanks for the reply! I want to try this in the future, but as of now, I definitely don't have the right equipment.
What is the best way to clean your glassware from Caesium usage?
Letting it slowly react with long chained alcohols decreasing the chain length gradually to isopropyl alcohol and ethanol. (Be careful, it could catch fire). When everything has reacted it can be cleaned with water.
You can directly use isopropyl alcohol but it will definitely catch fire and the reaction is a lot more vigorous.
lithiumLithium, don't wanna lock me up inside
Lithium, don't wanna forget how it feels without
Lithium, I wanna stay in love with my sorrow
Oh, but God I wanna let it go
Is making cesium a good way to invest or the equipment is more expensive than just buying cesium itself, BTW your channel is so underrated keep it up and eventually you will more popular than nilered
Depends on how much you want to make and how pure it needs to be. If you just want a small vial of cesium it's way cheaper to just buy it.
Why do you not reduce the cesium chloride with calcium metal? I have produced several alkali metals ( incl rubidium) by calcium reduction. Calcium is cheap and not very volatile.
Spicy metal
Cesium was named in the 1980s after a famous pizzaria which alfonso capone used to work at called little caesars.
A trustworthy source told me it was discovered by one of the twelve roman caesars.
Ich komme von Tiktok. Ich liebe deine Videos
Danke! Freut mich sehr zu hören!
Is it okay to keep a bunch of ampules of cesium in contact with each other in a case? I don't know how fragile they are, but if you dropped the case, would they break?
The vials have very thick walls. I don't think dropping the case would brake them. Nevertheless I would not recommend storing them this way. It was a short term solution until they were used.
Wait, did you weigh the grease on the stopper?
No, I estimated it with 0.1 g. There is only so much grease you can put on a stopper.
@Advanced Tinkering Not with that attitude!
When cesium giveaway?
Never I'm afraid. There are strict regulations regarding the shipping of dangerous goods. In addition I would not feel comfortable sending Cesium to people I can't be sure know how to handle it.
@Advanced Tinkering send a vial of chloride, "some assembly required" :-)
Warum haben Sie einen Englischen und nicht Deutschen Kanal?
Weil ich mich auch mit der internationalen Community austauschen möchte. Und das geht nur auf Englisch.

Yai, another of video of our crazy german chemist! TY for the upload! It definitely satisfies the curiosity. And no such thing as too many videos on this subject matter!

Yes. I was just thinking that he sounded a bit like Dr evil and minime aka dr klaus schwab and dr mengele and fraudci a tad. Just a tad.
