09:18 Have you ever seen those movies with dogs reuniting with owners after a long time ? did you notice that when the dogs SEE their owner they dont recognize them , but after they SMELL him , they imediatly recognize him !
I would like to see how a dog reacts after not seeing his owner after a long time, and someone else enters the picture wearing the clothes of the dogs owner, how would the dog be, confused, tripping, is the reaction the same.

i love that the representation for the smells that the dog is processing is also done through color, because that's the only way we can process it

I can confirm that my thought-to-be-blind 18 year old Cairn terrier (RIP July 30, 2022) could always find her way thru our home despite obstacles particularly navigating her way to the treat cabinet.
Even blind deaf dogs do amazingly well too, far better than we might expect. RIP to our best mates ever!
I knew dogs could process smell info better, but that they correlate smell with vision is mind blowing!

I’m an Explosives Detection K9 Handler, and I’m really glad you brought up how we can’t understand how their olfactory senses factor into their vision!
We have a saying called the hamburger effect, where a human smells a hamburger and generalizes it, a dog smells and distinguishes the meat, bun, lettuce, tomato etc
I remember learning about this in university, but that explanation didn’t even come close to this summary. I wish I had this back in my university days. Probably would have got that question right on the exam. Future generations will have THIS to view to help them understand a very interesting topic. I really look forward to future videos of whatever topics you decide to explore and explain how we actually know something. Great channel idea.

My mind is absolutely blown. I now connect this with Mark Robers vid about dogs smell and it's paiting even better picture of how insanely advanced their senses are. I love examples of dogs vision here but like you say we can not possibly imagine how it really looks for a doggo. That imige at 7:38 gave me actuall chills ;) Thanks for this guys.
I love how German works. ‘Umwelt’ is the word for environment and is made up of ‘Um’ (around) and ‘Welt’ (world), so it’s the world around you

environ = Old French for 'to surround'
Environment = that which surrounds you
Hungarian is also full of such composed words : )
@@brinta2868 English and German have the same indogermanic ancestry, so the basic mechanics on how words are put together are quite similar.
But to be fair, "Umwelt" is a bit broad and unspecific. "Umweltbewusstsein" would better fit the context of this video. Bewusstsein = awareness. Or "Umweltwahrnehmung". Wahrnehmung = perception.
I also speak Lithuanian, where my parents are from. Lithuanian is almost proto-indogermanic, very archaic language. Aplika = Ap- (circular-) and linka (bent around). A circle bent around (f.e. an individual).
0:44 I'm jealous of all of you who could see a number. Also, the bit previous to this comparing human vision and dog vision - they were almost identical for me, just that in the dog vision one of the colours (red, I think) was darker.

Something that made me laugh. In our puppy classes they had pictures on the wall "This is what you see" and "This is what your dog sees" and with my colour blindness they looked EXACTLY THE SAME 🤣 So I see exactly the colours my dog sees, but without the benefit of nasal enhancement. 👃

It's really strange that almost every human hears "dogs are color blind" and thinks this means that they don't see any colors, but nobody would ever think that about a color-blind person.
An even more basic question is how do we know that when two people are looking at the same thing, that they’re actually seeing the same thing in the same manner (size, structure format, texture, color, etc)?
We have a blind and deaf dog rescue, he knows the layout of our house perfectly and he could only have done that via scent and touch but it took him very few failures.

Yep, that's why my dog loves to lay outside and point her nose in the direction of the wind. I like to think of it as her equivalent of watching TV or listening to the radio (she's taking in all the "aromatic medlies" of the wind).

For anyone who would like to learn more about the “Unwelt”, I highly recommend the book “A immence world” by the British-American author, science journalist and Pulitzer winner, Ed Yong. Every page of this book is a mind blowing
I just graduated with a BS in Neuroscience & Cognitive science, and while i knew all of the information, this video genuinely helped me connect all the details I’ve learned over the past few years
It has been so long ago I read Stranger in a Strange Land and that reference just brought it all back to me. Awesome.

I've heard that dogs can smell emotions from several places but never got an explanation of how. How are emotions measured quantitatively so we know dogs can smell them? Do we produce chemicals/pheromones for emotions that release into the air that we could measure with a device? Can other humans detect them?
