The face of that one technician at the power distribution station as one random household suddenly starts to draw 20kW from grid: Priceless.
One of 2 scenarios:
“Hmmm, intermittent spikes at a random household, must be a glitch in the equipment”
OR
“Hey, Styropyro is at it again”
I think a central air conditioning unit's startup draw is around that; so it would be normal
@@Menuki Honestly I'd guess the local techs all know who he is since he's probably had his hookup upgraded at least twice.
@@kugeltmg In one of apartments I've lived in, the breaker to the unit itself was only a hundred amps. Twelve thousand watts would have cut off the electricity at the power meter, regardless of anything else.
That said, I looked at the breaker box in my apartment now and discovered that the breaker for the dryer is 60 amps and the breaker for the range is 100 amps. So maybe there are higher standards these days.
@kugeltmg of course depends on the size of the air conditioning unit and by extension of the area being serviced by the unit, but no. The heating element or the heat pump providing the cooling draws only a fraction of that kind of power. The fans creating the circulation of air draw a fraction of those two.

I actually died at the ''I bought this cute distribution transformer'' HOW
As far as those things go, that IS a cute little one. I've seen a few smaller ~5kVA ones that power only street lights. I'll have to pay attention next time I'm at my farm to see what size they installed for a single 200A (240V) service - that powers a 20A well pump. The one at my shop is 35kVA.
Mad Scientist Ebay. Not available on this dimension's Internet.
Unfortunately we're not allowed to have fun any more, but back in the day (the 90s or so) you could just ask the local power company nicely and they'd give you some decommissioned transformers or let you pick though their dumpster. The transformers are full of oil and cost a bunch of money to recycle (they used to be filled with cancer juice, look up PCBs). Same for the dumpsters, most of the stuff had no scrap value and they had to pay to get rid of it. Old utility poles, crossarms, conduit, so much good stuff.
surplus power line transformers can also be used for neon tube processing... although the neon plant i built has a 20kV Bombarding Transformer specifically designed to be used for neon processing.
He "borrowed" it just for this experiment. The power company always overestimates the load. Who needs that transformer anyway?

a microwave that can cook hot pockets and melt tungsten, interesting
@@recon_laksh742Well it can "melt" tungsten but still seeing other metals to just disappear within seconds is still terrifying
Microwaves do not directly apply heat to the surface of food. Instead, they cause asymmetric molecules to flip back and forth as the wave passes through them. We exploit this to vibrate water which is asymmetric do to the tug of the hydrogen atoms on each other. This excites the water into steam, cooking without burning and without all the delicious flavors that caramelization achieves. Non-conductive symmetric molecules are oblivious to what's going on, even in this legendary oven.
