@cal2127 Not what happened in Japan in the 90s, though it does involve it obviously, but what happened to Japan in the late 80s was kind of insane when you look into it. During their bubble period, they had huge economic growth and wealth because of a deal with the US and the dollar to Yen value. Companies like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Luxman (minus the Alpine aquisition of the company) just boomed during this era. If you look up the bubble period in Japan on YouTube you'll get more of an idea. It was just crazy imo.

It's the same thing all over again, another impulse purchase to ship it all the way over to the US. Both stories have a similar path, a purchase that on paper sounds crazy, but a purchase well spent bringing happiness, historical value, and irreplaceable memories to it's owners.
I mean impulse buys are always the premium. You never go half way on impulse because that's where you start to think about what you need and what not 😄

@Zanpaa You need to ask yourself if it's really worth a lot of money because CRT cataracts in such a large tube can't be cured (I'm sure it would implode). As Indiana Jones put it, this belongs in a museum. I wouldn't say it's worth anything monetarily. It's just awesome to preserve it as a piece of CRT history.

Some years back I bought an old JVC music server component in great condition for $50... original price was $2500 maybe 10 or 15 years before I got it. (I got it because I thought it was neat and was one more thing I could stack in my living room.)

Mitsubishi made a 42” viewable TV, based on a 45” tube, which my local Best Buy carried. And when they stopped selling the model, a friend who worked there recruited me and 3 other large guys to haul it up three floors to her apartment in an old Victorian house. Yes, we tested the floor strength before setting it up. It is probably still there.

Youtube randomly recommended this video to me. Don't know you, don't view your content on the regular, not even into CRTs - but I hope this gets you some visibility with Sony and they can reach out to you proper about it. Old technology like this isn't just simply things, hardware - it's works of art. And it ought to be preserved for as long as possible.
Same, not into this community, but got a random recommendation and thought that looks interesting and man that was fascinating. Regardless of what it is, I just love seeing that an old piece of fringe retro technology is getting saved.
I bet there are more of these out there, I doubt this is really the last of its kind, but like this one, the others are probably just in some random room in Japan where the owner has no idea what they have and are probably just annoyed by it taking up space.

I found this unbelievably heartwarming and kept saying "I love this story". An old but significant piece of tech bringing so many people together in a positive and collaborative way to preserve and restore it, all that organisation and goodwill, it's a hell of a thing.
There are some good people in the world. Im collecting toys and I needed a very limited set from very obscure toyline released only in Toys 4 Us. Found one in Australia, but the guy didn´t want to ship it to Europe. I posted on a FB group of totaly different toyline that I also collect. I am in no way a prominent member, or a big fan of that toyline, yet I got a reply from a guy few hours after I made my post that he is willing to help.
He contacted the guy, bough the set, payed for it + shipping, only after he had it in his hands and verified that it´s in a good condition he accepted payment from me and sent it my way.
So yeah, total stranger, risked his time and money just to help out another stranger.

I’m not exaggerating at all when I say that this is the coolest video I’ve seen in a really long time. The history, the storytelling, the the salvation of a white whale, holy grail piece of anachronistic technology, all the way down to christening its arrival on US soil with a game of Melee. Yeah, if someone just wants the relevant information presented as facts then video is very padded but if the script is well made then it becomes more about the journey in a form of storytelling of him getting that TV. In fact video very early on implies he managed to get it but for example in Japan they are fond of storytelling being more about the journey to the point there are fictional works that start with the ending. Like Boruto anime has this short opening scene that is placed what could be the final fight of the story.
the cost to ship that beast would have far exceeded, whatever benefit they got.

Literally everyone involved is just the most interesting person. A noodle shop owner who knows a guy at Sony. A game director who just happens to live nearby and is totally chill handling everything. A moving company who is willing to pull strings. This guy's parents who enable his spending habits. Him trolling everyone perfectly once he has it.
Abebe is pure legend. Helped out a internet stranger to investigate and get hold of holy grail, WHILST directing an acclaimed game. This is just too gigachad behaviour. Although the Beyonetta game is not something i was interested in, I just bought it just to say my thanks to Abebe. In a world full of unworthy people getting success, true to heart and kind people should be appreciated

I know that 43 inches is a lot, and there had already been footage of people walking around this TV, but that's the bit that sold me on just how big it is. This is an amazing bit of kit and I'm so glad to see it preserved.
I had a 32" Viera and that was a beast, but a bargain only cost me £299 so LED panels were coming into the foray, so CRT's were being cleared. That same TV is worth a lot more now due to how rare it is along with Sony Trinitron models, also they weigh a ton, took 2 of us to get it out of my old house, in the end I gave it away.
Even for 16:9 content it's around 40" and for 4:3 content it's taller than a 50" 16:9 TV
And, for the longest time, a 19" was the standard sized CRT.
Same for me. I had a 21" CRT for my PC back in the day, so I know how huge that felt at the time. But having that real estate in a 4-Player Split screen just feels wrong.

No joke, had this TV in my living room in the very early 2000s(bought used for like 4k which was a TON at the time) and it weighed probably 200lbs or more. I think we ended up throwing it in the dump when we moved a few years later.............nobody wanted to buy it back it back then and now its 100k?? dang

Soba noodles were so good where people waited in line very very long so they needed $100k Sony 440lbs CRT. Michelin Stars are meaningless vs that Osaka shop lol
I was a TV technician.
Once I repaired an Apple CRT monitor made by Sony. It had convergence problems, just like your TV. I tried everything and nothing solve the problem. So I decided to measure the convergence coils and the horizontal one have a lower impedance. I investigate and realize some coil wires are shortcircuited.
Long story short: Sony used a crap glue to hold the wires together and it ruined the wire isolation varnish, so the wires are making contact each other. I simple separated them and applied nail polish. Problem solved.
My 19" CRT TV that I've had since it was new in 1988 when I was 13 is currently dead for the same reason, i.e., the horizontal windings in the deflection yoke shorted and the enamel insulation got charred in the process. So I need a new yoke and I can't find one anywhere. It's a GoldStar 153-022D yoke, GoldStar 510RSB22 CRT, and GoldStar NC-06X1 chassis. Do you have any idea where I might find one? I've found nothing on eBay.

@MaximRecoilHave you tried to look for LG or Philips parts? LG is a division of Goldstar and they share a lot of specs with Philips.
Try to search for models that use a tube with the same spec of your TV.
@sumblwnup8695 My yoke is well beyond that type of repair. I was planning to try exactly that (except I was going to use marine grade polyester lacquer), until I removed the yoke and saw the extent of the damage. In addition to large charred sections of the existing enamel insulation, there is also at least one break in the wires.
@sanzionovisk Unless I find one with a matching part number, there's no way to know if it will be a match. GoldStar didn't publish the inductance values for the yoke in my TV's service manual, nor even the DC resistance values. And since my yoke is fried, I can't take accurate measurements from it myself. And even if I did know the electrical specifications, it's rare to find a yoke for sale that lists the inductance and DC resistance values, so it would still be a crapshoot. And testing a yoke that has too low inductance can cause damage, because it lets the voltage in the FBT get too high.
I did order a working 13" TV from eBay the other day which has the same Goldstar NC-06X1 chassis as my 19" TV, because I want its chassis as a spare, but I assume its yoke will be different due to the smaller CRT.
ABEBE IS A SERIOUS HERO, FOR BEING SO PATIENT WITH THIS WHOLE PROJECT! Shank, you are one LUCKY GUY, to have this work out, to any degree! I mean, WOW! I've never seen one of those things, after my Dad's business got rid of their 32" CRT! Congratulations, on getting this endeavor finished! Completely historical, seeing this thing, intact!

I did as well. This almost got scrapped and this guy, his contacts, and Shopify made it happen. It makes me SOO happy to see this behemoth still going decades later. It also looks like it's in perfect nick as well! I only wish I had saved my 42? or 43" Trinitron... the big one that was 720p, wide, and completely flat. I remember that TV well, until it got replaced with a 32" Sharp AQUOS LCD which was "new" at the time.

DAMN. Abebe is the goat! The man is legit responsible for saving possibly one of a kind remaining giant CRT, and he did it in the most chad way possible:
1. Respond to a plea for help not knowing what it's about, bur evidently willing to help no matter what
2. Say you have a friend working in heavy equipment moving and help set everything up "on the ground", down to coming up with a way to contact the owner that possibly saved the whole operation
3. Refuse to elaborate
4. Be a goddamn legend

You know, 99% of the time people don’t understand how important something really is and what it means to preserve that thing. Abebe is one of the few rare people that knows the importance of preservation. This isn’t just another zenith TV because they made 1 billion of those. There are two types of rare. There is good rare meaning it’s the best but they only made a few of them and there is bad rare meaning it’s junk and they only made a few of them because they realized it was junk and it wasn’t selling well Because it’s junk. This is the good kind of rare. Abebe must have understood that. It’s important because an average person would’ve just thought that this is stupid because it’s a CRT television that’s big and heavy and you know.
Not only did you use sponsor ship money to buy a old rare TV, you technically also used the sponsor money so that you could shitpost and playfully troll a community. Just earned a sub from me .
I'm an ex TV Engineer, I was an apprentice in the mid to late 70's I would have been gobsmacked to see this TV of the future. This story is epic, never thought I'd be moved by a giant TV with it's wonderful epic, story...!
My grandfather had the TV repair shop in town. My background is EE/CE and I've been in electronics repair for almost 40 years. This video put a lump in my throat too. Amazing story, for an amazing piece of history.

The fact that all the stars aligned at the EXACT moment. From the owner properly needing to actually get rid of the CRT, to Abebe going out, and even knowing someone who could handle and ship it and even the friends and repair guys that knew how to fix the convergence and alignment issues like... Luck was even more on your side than you could ever imagine...
TBH, the secret behind all of this is MONEY.
Money makes the world go round. Even if most of these people didn't exactly ask to be paid, they had to "compensated" for sure. I guess being a YT channel with over 400K grants you a certain level of money fluidity.
Right? The unbroken line of astonishing coincidence that made this happen is unbelievable, from figuring out it existed mere weeks before it was to die to Abebe just randomly knowing people who do heavy shipping to the US, of all things.
@sadderthanyou7793 it wasn't ONLY money. Money greased the gears to make it happen, sure, but how it all just clicked together by complete happenstance is almost miraculous.
@fallingwater Money is what made it possible, and the only lucky part was finding the owner before the building got torn down.
It has been my experience that this type of coincidence happens a lot, most of us attribute it to God's plan, and makes life fun and enjoyable as it adds to the mystery of why we are here.

I can't believe I just sat and watched 35 minutes about a guy buying a 35 year old TV...and it was still entertaining. Also Abebe deserves a lot of appreciation, doesn't sound like this would've happened without him.

We used to have a 36" which was the largest normally available TV. I thought that was heavy at around 100 lbs! Fell right on it's face onto carpet one time. I thought it was done. But it survived. Was too big for the new place, so away it went to the mover. 😞
@Sawbuck a couple years ago I was scrolling the local Craigslist free section and found a free digital converter box, ONLY if you took the TV with it.
I jumped on it as I retro game and needed a converter box for my game room.
It's a 36" CRT and it nearly killed my father and I to carry it out of her house.
A year later my 4 year old 42" flat-screen bit the dust.
We thought it was bad carrying out her house, my front porch told us different 😂😂
Tv works great to this day, thankfully my stand is the old headboard of an 80swatered, its made out of real 2"x12"

This is a Chihiro and Mr. Takahashi appreciation thread.
They both played a huge and critical role in the acquisition of the TV. However, due to the private nature of their lives, I wasn't able to get into the more specific details of their roles in the video. Chihiro put in so much work to make the logistics work, and Mr. Takahashi put his neck on the line to make this happen. It was a huge, stressful, and risky ordeal for them. Without the work of both Chihiro and Mr. Takahashi, this story would have had a very different ending. I do not have social media to point you to, so please thank them here 🙏
