We show how to make glow sticks and go through all the chemicals needed as well as how to make different colors. We also talk about the chemistry and scientifically research a proposed mechanism.

To make the glow stick mix together the following:

10mL Diethyl Phthalate (solvent)
3mg of fluorescent dye (see below)
50mg TCPO (see below)
100mg sodium acetate
3mL 30% hydrogen peroxide (add last to start reaction)

The fluorescent dye can be 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene for green, Rubrene for yellow, 9,10-diphenylanthracene for blue, and rhodamine B for red.

TCPO is expensive to buy but can be made for much cheaper by following the directions in our previous video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViJknvEEEOA

The chemicals, including the ones to make TCPO were purchased from alfa aesar: http://www.alfa.com

The Rhodamine B and Rubrene dyes were instead purchased from sigma Aldrich: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/

The dyes and TCPO are carcinogenic and gloves should be worn when handling them.

The TCPO and sodium acetate amounts can be varied considerably and still obtain good light. Smaller quantities tend to be dimmer and decay faster, while larger quantities last longer.

For those of you higher level individuals that actually do want to know the mechanism for this process, please refer to this article: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/ja808401p

On another note, watching this is so relaxing. I don't know the chemical or psychological explanation but just looking at the glowing colors relaxed me pretty much immediately (I was feeling pretty keyed up and tense).

abdullahi jonga - 2018-05-15

how can I get the chemical

Jacob Crosby - 2021-10-21

I suspect it's from fire. Fire is relaxing, it brings about comfort, and I suspect that your caveman brain saw fire and felt comforted on some lizard-brain level... 😁

Not Available - 2015-02-15

Excellent video thank you! I was obsessed with these as a kid. In a glow stick, are all the chemicals mixed together except the hydrogen peroxide, meaning a batch can be made and stored?

Toxic Phantom - 2016-02-21

I LOVE your science channel. Also, I kinda had a feeling that the Mountain Dew myth is fake I was gonna do it myself but, my Uncle told me it's not worth it you'll just be wasting good brand of Soda. So, I took his word for it.

AceTheDragon3 - 2015-01-31

When you pronounced the chemical names... I felt my brain cells pop.

CyberRacer - 2018-08-25

@AceTheDragon3 once you know the elements it wont be that hard its just joint together

@Ella Vickers stg what in De Fuqqq😂😭🤦🏿‍♂️

John Richardson - 2014-06-25

Thanks for the demo.  Two quick questions:  What type of energy is being released from the reaction, if not light?  Specifically, what is exciting the atoms in the fluorescent paint?

Secondly, is it possible to "recharge" the glow sticks once they have expired?  Via another chemical to separate them out, electricity, or some other process?  A reuseable glow stick would be great.

Gloworm Sparkle far - 2013-10-07

That was great, I loved all the information : D The visuals and thoroughness was awesome as well. thanks PLURR

Tom Bloom - 2015-03-08

It would be interesting to see the dyes exposed to various laser light colors during the mixing.

Wonderful science videos, thank you!

CopperTopHero - 2014-01-05

THANK YOU! This totally helps on a science article I'm writing for my science class!

amazing! Gonna start my 3rd year of my phD in chem in 1 week. I already have my Inorganic Chem. classes done but I SO have to sneak on the lab to do these!!

Virginia O'Malley - 2013-08-20

Great job explaining to us the exact science and chemicals to make a glow stick.

Epileptic Dragon - 2019-10-05

Thank you for the help. Do you think you could do one about synthetic Crystals? I used to make them when I was a kid as a science project and just for fun. (It came in a box) It was quite fun. It took around 4 days. I wish I could remember how to create them again.

My dream job would be worker in glowstick factory XD Imagine watching huge amounts of glowing liquid flowing -

mastervule - 2014-11-23

http://i.imgur.com/HUCXm.gif

Synapse - 2014-11-28

yeah, but the glowing doesn't start until the end consumer breaks the glass tube and mixes the chemicals. The liquid doesn't glow in the factory. Also, it's pretty boring and mostly automated, not like there's a gajillion workers stirring giant vats of liquid light, more like a dude in a lab coat and hard hat operating a control panel and another dude driving a forklift with empty plastic tubes to make glow sticks out of...

mastervule - 2014-11-28

Great work on explaining, and you keep me interested by your commentary! Great work!

Z3AL0Z - 2016-05-17

Hey NurdRage, I was wondering if it would be possible to make a glow-in-the-dark-fluid instead of the conventional solid form. So a fluid that stores energy of light and slowly radiates it again

André Luiz Lourenço - 2015-01-17

Does the energy of the emitted wavelength have anything to do with brigthness? Or is that the quantum yield?? Thanks for sharing this knowledge!

pvc - 2014-11-04

You say thay DNPO and CPPO will both work. But I only have C3PO. Will it work?

Great stuff! Did you work out the chemistry or obtain it somewhere else?

Kevin J - 2015-03-16

Great video.  Your experiments are awesome.  I wish I had the brainpower to understand the chemistry!

Haylie - 2013-09-18

This was really cool to watch and learn about! Thank you so much for posting this video! :)

BiteLime - 2016-12-17

Can you make one with more of each material making up the same volume in total? Therefor making it glow much much brighter; or can you make one that glows as much as possible?

RIXRADvidz - 2014-01-25

glow sticks have been a favorite toy since the 1970's...thanks for sharing the science.

Kelly - 2020-07-17

Hi, thanks for this! How do you safely dispose of these chemicals after use?

Gabriel Tobing - 2019-05-07

"Let me give it a shake. There we go, NOICEEEEE!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Martin Brada - 2015-08-30

I have a question. If I buy a glow stick from store, can I restore glowing process by adding TCCP and hydrogen peroxide to the already reacted mixture? Are there any limits to restore glowing of this mixture?

Bradford Drake - 2015-02-10

Let there be colored glow in the dark light!!! I love the organic chemistry!

Matt Csencsics - 2015-12-02

as always a beautiful video and very well defined thank YOU :D

Bob Hoff - 2014-08-23

Great vid.  Have a question.  Any suggestions on what could be used to thicken the liquid a little bit?  I ask because I play disc golf and some times we like to throw at night.  I went and bought 10 glow sticks, broke them open are poured all the contents into a sprayer.  I sprayed the chains and basket then a 30' radius around the basket.  It lasted, out in the open, for at least 2 hours.  Don't know how long since I did that at 9:00 pm on a work night and went to bed at 11:00 pm and was still glowing.  Kept the sprayer in my bedroom and the residue left in it kept glowing for 3 days.  Anyway, the glow liquid was a little thicker than water but not by too much and dripped a bit.  Wasn't a big deal because the glow on he ground still helped with the visibility.  I just thought that if it were a little be thicker it'd stick to the basket and chains better.  Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I wonder if it is possible to use a mercury salt as a dye replacement.

Belinda Vossler - 2013-10-06

very cool!!! i love science, and i love things that glow! so this video was great!!! such pretty colors :D

Kuru Kuru - 2017-10-21

This is very helpful and understandable for a complicated reaction and I like how you say long chemical name then before ending the video you just say "and that is the basic of glowstick"

catman72 - 2017-03-16

is this reaction reversible? can i reuse a spent glowstick by adding something that will chemically reactivate it?
also - can these chemicals be used for electroluminesence?

SME Pictures - 2016-04-18

hey, if you mixed both the yellow and blue dyes before mixing the rest of the stuff, would it give you white glow that way or must you mix two separate reactions together, as shown?

Pyro Nicampt - 2016-04-30

+StrokeMahEgo The reactions would give the same result regardless of when the dyes are mixed.

with millions videos out there, i would rate this as one of the most clear and scientific ever....names could be loopy for non-initiaed though :)

Lady Of The Winds - 2015-02-03

With the quantities used in this video, how long does the light emits at his peak It goes on for hours but can it light as bright as start for that many hours?

kynigh - 2015-02-03

Wow I have just discovered this channel and it rocks! I love chemistry. Is this guy a chemist or what?

rythecreator - 2014-04-17

wow very good on science you are good and experiencing. just wondering, what happens if you put too much hydro peroxide. what happens if you mix up all the colors together?

JawsJaws - 2015-10-04

As soon as I seen diethyl phthalate, I paused the video to say I have to stop watching right now because I have no idea what it is or where to get it.

cool video man.  In the Marine Corps, we used to use IR chem lights....glow sticks encased in a dark purple plastic with white on the inside.  the chem light would only glow when looking at it with night vision goggles

marwa - 2020-01-23

do you have an article/book or any scientific sources that goes into the quantities required to make a glow stick? I'd really appreciate it!!
