Nitrogen trichloride is unpredictable and wildly sensitive. And also bad. We craft some chemistry to craft it, with the help of some friends. Nile desperately avoiding calling himself a piss chemist killed me
@Tetraphosphorus Dr. Piss is the best timeline.
"Mr. Red"
Alchepisst
@The guy that asked lmao 🤣
"not taking the piss here, but I know my shit!"
i appreciate the full circle ending
Who is shotty steve?
@Verbena IDK dude just look at his channel
@Ash Weber-Campbell ok but who is shotty steve?
@Verbena IDK omg it's Verbena IDK
@Gluraqua omg it's Gluraqua
the videos of "James Cambell" holding up the rapidly-forming high explosive in a glass container and just... shaking it around... genuinely scared the shit out of me lmao
@Francis Taylor Icing on the cake is that he just eyeballs the mix like he's mixing his 9th rum coke that day 😛
@MrWalter yea too bad they also radiated other ppl like the guard in the room and other scientists
@Cleo King Only themselves fatally but yea they were explicitly told if they kept fucking with criticality like they were they'd die... And they did.
Some people have a casual disregard for their own lives. Zilipopper is the same way but for electricity. The shit that guy does just makes me cringe because it's... So deadly. And yet he just keeps doing it.
@Francis Taylor but we wouldn't have that amazing video without James Cambell's sacrifice
@aljaž Slemc That description is absolutely dead on.
Nile's boutta make a third channel exclusively dedicated to piss chemistry and call it NileYellow.
🤣🤣🤣
I want every chemistry channel on you tube to be named Nile[color/something] now.
goddamn it u beat me to it lol
This man predicted nilegreen a year before he made the channel.
Just wanted to come back to this vid to inform you all that James Cambell has lost at least 2 fingers last month in his pursuit of science. The man cannot be stopped and frankly his dedication to the explosive arts is commendable.
Got to admire the man's dedication.
Dude was arrested because of being featured in this video lol
"what makes me a good demoman?"
That rate seems… unsustainable.
You are both a significant influence in my pursuit of a career in chemistry and the single most likely reason for being kicked out of university in the near future.
Mood, lmao
You been kicked out of Uni yet?
Keeping glass away from explosives is definitely a good idea. I once had some glassware that had carbon on it and chromic acid wouldn't shift it so I and another (who shall remain nameless) made what turned into dimanganese heptoxide and it wasn't really happy at having so many oxygens around it so it got rid of some of them, as it tends to, and around six months later, we realised that we weren't shouting to each other any more. I wrote about this in the book Let the Devil Wear Black, writing under the name James F Linden. A few years later, I took the trouble to learn British Sign language in case something catastrophic happened with my hearing. basically, it was in a double fume cupboard with a glass dividing wall and we never found any of that divider - we think it just powdered. I had glass in my hand and I still carry glass around inside me over 40 years later.
Holy shit
That's terrifying.
Wow that video was beyond amazing. When he pulled out the hedge trimmer on the call with NileRed I completely lost it.
„Continue, continue“
With bunnings warehouse theme ☺ awesomeness
Bill Wurtz and Technology Connections references in the same video plus a NileRed collab? Youtube is a strange and wonderful place. Good luck Tom and we'll catch you in Season 2.
@Mailos177 Presenting what's usually considered absolutely boring stuff in an exciting way is also what Ex&F is doing, so no wonder.
@LOUDcarBOMB I KNEW I KNEW THAT SONG
@Nick Su no, the ultimate crossover was when The Horse from Horsin Around was on Mr. Peanutbutter's house
@nibblrrr terrifyingly smooth jazz in this case, surely?
Is loving Jesus legal yet?
During my courses for a pool operator's license (yes thats a thing lol) they taught us about trichloramines and how to factor the total chlorine from the "free" (unreacted) chlorine. The goal of which is to keep at a ratio of 1-5ppm. then i worked at an olympic pool and we would just have to ignore that because would have so many patrons (pissy kids) in the summer that if we kept it at 5ppm it would all be depleted within one or two hours. So uh yeah being indoors watching a pissy pool for nearly a decade and having my eyes nose and skin feel like they were dragged through a salt bed was an experience to say the least. the smell stuck to me for a week+ after i would leave for school each semester.
Just want to clarify something:
Nitrogen Trichloride didn't assassinate Michael Faraday, it was his mentor Sir Humphrey Davy. Though they were both still injured by it later. In fact, with the amount of damage it caused to Davy, it was the actual cause for Faraday to become his sort of handyman and assistant.
But the greatest example of Nitrogen Trichloride lethality was to its founder, Pierre Louis Dulong, who lost two fingers and blinded one eye to it.
3:13 brings back bad memories of working in a very hot and humid warehouse and trying to package a hygroscopic product into buckets. It usually took about thirty minutes before there was sweat trickling steadily out of the gloves, and if you ripped one, you'd just splatter everywhere.
Also, the product we were packaging was yellowish, which should've been my first warning.
Weirdly enough, this is my favorite science channel. Just fucking around with chemistry to make explosions
"What is the worst chemical" for me it's really a tie between difluorine dioxide aka FOOF, and Chlorine triflouride.
Yes. Both FOOF and ClF3 make NCl3 look well-behaved.
Explosions&Ire + NileRed cameo= the greatest explosion since Bikini Atoll
Pool's Closed: Due to yellow chemistry, by order of the Wizzard
I watched this while tripping balls. 110/10
Goddamn that was the most entertaining thing I have seen probably ever.
Many, many, many years ago when I was young and stupid I used tincture of Iodine disinfectant and supermarket ammonia, and it worked perfectly fine. Precipitated these fine black crystals that when dried out and lightly poked sounded like a rat trap going off. Scary how accessible it is.
I never forget the "get sweaty" step. Therefore, I think I've earned my honorary chemistry degree...that's not technically an oxymoron, right?

"Oh ya, the peeing in the pool bit"
had me laughing on the ground honestly
He wasn't the chemistry teacher we got but he was the chemistry teacher we needed.
P I S S C H E M I S T R Y
Ok
Now he just needs a decent microphone 🙄
The truest statement made about this man ever! Thank you for showing up and making chem 151 makes sense!
He wasn't the chemistry teacher we deserved , neither is it the one we got. However, it is the one we would've needed.
Posted 7 hours after finishing my IB Chemistry HL final exams (they were the last ones for the diploma programme).
When I was young (about 45 years ago) we used to make "Touch Powder" by mixing Cloudy Ammonia with Iodine Crystals to make a wet paste.
We would then put drops of it on the driveway so when dad reversed out they would detonate and scare the crap outta him, which was fun, but getting the flogging from him for doing it, wasn't so much fun.. but ya live n learn.
I was thinking about high explosives, and I had remembered that my high school chemistry teacher in '09 taught us how to make high explosives from acetone and hydrogen peroxide.
Apparently, they didnt start rolling out explosive detectors that could sense it (as it doesn't contain nitrogen) until 2016ish.
been watching since i started my chem undergrad and now that i’ve been doing research i understand your synthesis cynicism and hatred of yellow. yellow for me means my boron clusters don’t crystallize :’(
Could you make 2,4-Dinitrophenol also known as DNP? It would be interesting particularly because of its history. Plus, it's very yellow and we all know yellow = good.

We use to have a pool when I was a kid, above ground with a sign that said "welcom to our ool please notice there is no p in it, we would like to keep it that way"
666TH LIKE LOL
@Alfredas simply
At least it isn’t due to stingraids
Hes starting a whole new feild called chempisstry.
Im pretty proud of that one.
@John Rickard from wikipedia "It is extremely explosive in its pure form, even at −100 °C"
My two favourite YouTube chemists together in one video about an evil explosive irritant. This is like Xmas morning for me; thank you so much! 😃
What an amazing channel mate! I love the combo of humour, chemistry and explosions
My thought before this episode:"would be cool if you collaborated w NileRed"
Literally next episode:*on call w NileRed*
✨ MaGiC ✨
this was such a great video. I really like your content and super appreciate you showing us you essentially growing up and still being really into explosions lol
As an electrical engineer I personally take offense to the attempt to assassinate faraday
@M Shock to be honest I just believe everyone should strive to know how things work
It’s disappointing that 99.5% of people don’t care
@Thomas A
Well not everyone is cut out for thinking. With all the modern technology its seems theres a schism between people that use technology to be more lazy and then theres others that use it to gain access to a plethora of knowledge and improve efficiency. Which too often i see people over do it in the efficiency department and it starts going against itself.
But yeah most people dont seem to realize they got a compendium of human knowledge in their pocket but they only ever use it for tracking how many steps they take in a day or do chatty snaps with people they barely know.
What a time to be alive indeed.
BENZENE
u miss da joke men :(
@Explosions&Fire Australian sarcasm seems to not translate online lol
Great content man, idk how you find time for doing all the cool shit you do and thats probably why your taking a break but thanks for what you have done. Also, I like the editor side notes and collaborations!
Lmfao I love how his girlfriend is so into everything he does. Literally convinced this chick to watch him take off sweaty gloves.
That's his sister
Haven't watched a main channel video in a while, but dude, that was so good! The edits, skits and jokes were perfect. I'm excited for season 2
Our science teacher Mr Clarke made 'touchpowder' with us at the end of 4th year (Australia in the 1970s).
We dried it in the lab room on filter paper and before it became dangerous, took it outside put the paper on the ground and walked on it.
As the paste dried on the sole of our shoes it went off with a crackle and pop.
Those were the days😆
This was one of the best vids in a while, and I'm livid that YouTube hid it from me for two goddamn weeks. You're going on break on a high note, my guy. Well played.
Makes a banger of a video and then disappears, why do all internet chemistry wizards mysteriously evaporate into the sands of time. The Bunnings memes for the send off, mint.
He's still active on his second channel
I love Sir Reds complete giving up at the end and just accepting "Ok, well, this is my life now"
Seeing my two favorite chemists from YouTube together made my urge to watch you guys collaborate on a video much larger.
Also, this video made the episode of South Park with the pee in the pool so much more funny.
No urethra explosion risk is the worst news I've heard all day
Life once again became just a bit more dull... :(
tfw no detonating urethra
Reality is often disappointing
@Chemistry of Questionable Quality hey, where does he say this?
@ABoring Person At the very end of the video, after the interview of NileRed
3:44
So sensitive that it wasn't detonated by the stick impact, but just by the approaching air!
I swam in high school and had contracted what my doctor called "athletic onset asthma." It turned out what had happened was the girl's swim team was so scared of their coach they wouldn't leave to go to the bathroom and were just actively peeing in the pool enmass. Once this was discovered, they super chlorinated the pool, knocked out the NCl3 and a month later my asthma was drastically reduced (I swam basically daily for almost a decade and this was in my last year so I think at least some of it was just my lungs begging for release).
THEN, a few months after that the local swim club (mostly elementary/middle schoolers, you know younger kids who don't know better) began using our pool and just a few weeks after that my cough came back again. I was pretty sure it wasn't a coincidence haha.
1:40 that is possible with certain headphones, not ones like these that use a normal mic, but with those which use bone conduction, these are actually sometimes used at construction sites for communication as when bone conduction mics are used they only pick up the sounds in your jaw, aka what you say, and not background sounds.
I imagine that if you're physically holding a chainsaw you're likely transferring those vibrations into your jawbone. It's not that far away after all.
@Noah You have a fair bit of shock absorption in your body, the joints are a big part of it. It's why running for example isn't as jarring as just headbutting the air.
@Giorgi Tsiklauri I get that, I just imagine a chainsaw creating strong enough vibrations that they might still be picked up. It's a pretty powerful machine after all, but maybe I'm underestimating our shock absorption capabilities
"You're allowed to use shitty plastic cups when making explosives."
Quote of the year.
Leaving us with a bit of yellow chemistry 💛 Good luck Tom and look forward to season 2!
Season 3
The grand finale
We love you 😘
@King Paint That's a thermonuclear burn
Bro you getting my hype levels so high for season 2, shits gonna be fire, and you know explosions and stuff
NileRed!! Right on! He's a brilliant young Canadian.
Davey my guy thank you for being such a professional chemist that cures depression!

after watching all your videos, im like 100% sure youtube is screwing u on the recommendations cause explosives. but u prolly knew that already… u clearly deserve way more. that sucks dude. but ur really good at what u do

Dajudge06 - 2022-01-04
I know i have a hard time getting youtube to put his stuff from this channel on any kind of autoplay, it always wants to lead me into Niles channel, I love Niles stuff and have watched this shiz out of most of his content but god damn I JUST WANT SOME EXPLOSIONS AND FIRE XD. Also doesnt seem like youtube wants to put together a mix of videos like they usually do with most channels, quite sad, Tom is entertaining AF.
Younes Layachi - 2022-01-12
For an account watching multiple chemistry channels yeah it takes a relatively long while for this to be recommended
Si74l0rd - 2022-04-16
@Dajudge06 Don't forget to check Extractions and Ire, if you're not already subscribed to that one too.
Alexander Thomas - 2022-04-16
The algorithm was pretty stubborn in recommending this video to me, so it's definitely not being shadow banned.
And I was not disappointed!
