• Of the electromagnetic spectrum, humans can see a tiny sliver. If the total spectrum were expressed as 1000 miles, our color vision would amount to a few inches.
• Visible light ranges from red at longer wavelengths (around 620-750 nm) to blue/violet at shorter wavelengths (around 450-380 nm).
• Wavelengths roughly in the middle between red and blue are interpreted as green.
• If both red and blue light are detected but green is not, we experience it as purple.
• Purple does not correspond to a single wavelength of light; it is perceived by our brains when both red and blue light are present without green.
• Therefore, while all color is a mental construct used to distinguish between a few wavwlwngths, purple is the most "imaginary" color because it does not exist as a distinct wavelength on the visible spectrum.

This is such a fascinating documentary on so many levels. It's not just fascinating to learn about jumping spiders and colour vision in animals. You've got some evolution & genetic in there, too. But to me, seeing the professional academic zoologist's research process and techniques is also fascinating. There is so much rich science in this video. From the magnet/ball experiment, to painting termites, to the discovery of the red spiders incorrect colour vision hypothesis leading to the description of the out of focus illusions. But to top all that - using a particle accelerator to visualise the movement of the cones in the back of a live spider's eyes? Mind blowing.

I was having a lot of jumping spiders crawling on my curtains. I would find one on my curtain every couple of days trying to live there. And I wasn't understanding why they kept getting on the curtain. And I would do my best to catch them and put them back outside. But after like the fifth spider, I realized that the curtains were the same color as the flowers on the trees outside my window and that they were coming from there. I knew then that they are somehow interpreting the color of my curtains as big flowers and that's why they're on my curtains. So I switched out my curtains to blue because I read that spiders don't like the color blue. And I haven't seen any since, so to everybody out there just as an f. Y. I. never use the same color curtains as the flowers in your yard. Oh and the color they were attracted to was coral or orange/pink
