We break out our nice elemental bromine to put three bromide groups on our cyclopentanone ketal as part of the long cubane synthesis. Can we pull it off?? Will the power of test cricket in the radio provide the magic needed? The Australian stereotype of "everything in Australia wants to kill you, especially the spiders" is due mostly in part to home chemists giving the spiders a sound education in the production of high explosives.
Australia, the one country where you have a 100% legitimate need to carry an SMG at all times, has some of the strictest gµn laws on the planet...
That spider was apparently at Osowiec...ran right into bromide with nothing but silk.
Lets gooo, another video of rolling the chemistry dice to make dice shaped chemistry.
oooh yeah I like that
@Extractions&Ire Woah you responded! Love your channel dude, home chemistry is the best because you'll never know how its gonna go, and risk is fun ofc
Thanks for all your work!
Congratulations on the yield! 50% when the authors report 60% is something I can barely pull off in a proper lab.
Indeed, have a drink tn mate!
I was pleasantly surprised as well. So satisfying to see it when he added it to the filter.
If there's one group of people who lie more than fishermen about the size of fish they catch, its people who write chemistry papers. Maybe that's why my reagent grade potassium fluoride is 102 percent pure.
"I dry my sieves by microwaving them, is that trash?"
"Ehh it might not be that bad, i mea-"
"oops one caught on fire"
"ok lmao yea it's bad"
tbf, I use a microwave in my lab to dry sieves out. Not had one on fire yet....
"Shoutout to the US war machine." - Actually all of my rocketry work. Man the 60s were sick.
God bless the 60s
Is he not also working in "defense"?
"I mean the constant threat of nuclear hellfire sucked but fuck if we didn't get some sick-ass chemistry out of it"
me, looking for employment with my aerospace degree
@Rose Whittle The old - come on, let's start just a little rivalry with someone. No need for an actual war, but just enough to get us some more rocket plane budgets. XD
Orange chemistry is just yellow chemistry with just a touch of the secret ingredient : denial
I'm a physicist, but from what I can gather of chemistry that seems to be a rather large portion of the entire field
"Do not build a web around my f'n Bromine" lol that's the sound of authentic Australian chemistry right there <3
>“We need to be careful of temperature or it tars up”
>uses cheap Chinese thermometer
haha true, but the mercury ones are okay for me! the red alcohol ones are dreadful though
@Extractions&Ire oh was it a Mercury one? I thought it was a red alcohol one lmao
the extractions and ire trademarked chroma keying on random chemicals is really a great effect
Let's goooo new Ex&I video! Most entertaining chemistry channel. I was using some DCM in the lab the other day, and was instantly reminded of the MLP jar... Thanks a lot
You're welcome, that's actually where all DCM is sustainably farmed from
@Barbed Wire83 whelp, that's enough internet for today.
@Extractions&Ire I’m glad I’m not the only weirdo distilling DCM from that Bunnings source haha
" 2020 Looks like things are starting to improve, things are on the up"
This comment did not age well for Australia
We don't have to test the crickets where I live... they work just fine.
how would you know if you never tested them???
you're like a real yellow chemistry artist, that product in the filter looked just like nan's scrambled eggs
That's a nice amount of bromine you added to the mix lol
n i c e
Actually I was going to comment on using such a soft hose for vacuum work, but yeah... I guess you shouldn't put a flat bottom flask under vacuum with contents that are hot enough to melt glass either.
Yeah I'm surprised the terrible soft hose and tiny 12 V pump could make a vacuum strong enough to do that, but I guess it can
Or put contents hot enough to deform glass in glass for a start
"We made it to the summer holida-"
My shoes are full if snow jerk.
Yes but is it Tom’s special pink snow?
@Long Peter Nah, it's yellow.
Don't eat the yellow snow.
Guess it takes him six months to edit a video.
@Rivkah Levi google Australian summer months maybe?
Yes! Great job, the dark gods deliver once again! Have a happy new year and looking forward to your new videos!
IT'S ALL GONE YELLOW OUTSIDE, ABORT ABORT, GIANT YELLOW MASS IN THE SKY
@Billy O'sullivan If you're referring to Chinas one child policy thing (not sure if it's still in place), and people aborting or killing their female babies because they wanted a male (for some honor BS), then I'm aware of that. Not sure what that has to do with India though.
@Billy O'sullivan Got a link to an article I can read? Or a wikipedia page?
Oh jeez Rick
@Extractions&Ire "No Man's Yield"
@J H These days, 2 babies policy is applied in China instead.
the scene that went from normal speed to slow-mo with the bromine dropping in was so cool
Always excited for a new E&I, or E&F video, and never disappointed!
I just like that the aromatic ring finally got some neato sunglasses
I noticed ascaridole too
Haha mate, there are quite a few of your viewers in research labs around the country if my uni is any indicator.
Fr
0:22 Ooh those high production values.
Yeah goddamn mind blowing special effects there
That was kinda neat, lol
Our m8 Tom blessing us with some of those next generation editing skills.
Amazing! Seems like some incredibly sensitive chemistry and it all went well! Now if only I could get results like that in my research lab
Some sieves can be dried in the microwave, some cannot. The mds/data sheet should day
Just slap the microwave-safe symbol on those suckers
for me by far the most magical and technically impressive part is when you screw something up and improvise to salvage something. even when it doesn't work, it's still impressive and i almost believe that you know what you're doing.
This is impressive work ! You're pretty talented, not gonna lie ! One can clearly appreciate your evolution as a chemist, really !
Thanks for all the good stuff !
25 seconds in, and the cinematography is on point with that transition wipe.
Now to watch the rest.
Oh hey, actually a nice yield and a very promising product! Who did you pray to again, Cthulhu?
This is great stuff, thanks!
Next Series: Icosatetranitrohypercubane!
I about choked when I saw the thumbnails for this vid. So pumped for you man, this channel is amazing
Honestly dude thanks for taking the time and effort to make these vids.
If you ever start electrochemistry I can help you build your own supply.
cricket on the radio: the sound of the summer. iconic <3
I love your videos, they are so educative and smart but with a lot of humor
we make it everytime you grace us making it with your entertaining AF backyard chemistry projects lol
As a chemistry major i really love your channel. Im taking my first semester of organic chemistry next semester and im really excited to learn how chemistry works in real life (as opposed to general chemistry)
hey good luck mate!
@Extractions&Ire thanks! 😁
the warping of the glass actually made it more structurally sound on accident lol
You said you can't get the reaction above 30 and I saw all the ice melt and I was like oh no it's going to be fucked but then I realized your using metric and not freedom units. All is well.
Yeah 30 in normal units is much easier to control than 30 in freedom units for sure!
You're a Bush World Adventures version of Thunderfoot and I love it!
Good stuff mate ! Fecking awesome !
You're shaping up in every way - Chem, video production, much less yellow and tar !
Great job !
P.S. don't put All your trust in Simax bottles - they are the Best for most things, but a couple of mine failed to restrain the daemons within.
You'll definitely have 100k before 2021 ends. Your growth and quality has been going up exponentially. Keep kicking arse man.
I love the little circular spotlights that move around during your timelapses
Nice vid, mate!
Will you try recrystallizing the still yelowish solid with some methanol?
Love the content keep it coming
Wow, just the intro made my day so bright, lol. Thank you! And good job with all the chemically stuff m8!
I love watching this series. Chemistry on Youtube is always for everyone - like explosions or simple to understand. But you are doing some professional stuff. I am happy to see this community grow. Best greetings from a chemistry student who likes yellow chemistry
Who likes yellow!! You had me until then... nah, thanks mate!
That synthwave bromine administration was gorgeous.
Not gonna lie, I thought this reaction would be hell and tar up like crazy. Getting that 50% yield sounds great!
Actually, good job mate! Brominated stuff always seems yellow-orangy, no matter how often you wash it
Name Namerson - 2020-12-27
you know youve got a good chemistry channel when the viewership is just other chemists going 'yeah mate, same'
deathdragon1100 - 2020-12-27
all my homies love aromatic halogenation
Big Papa Pancake - 2020-12-29
I'm not a chemist at all, I just like the blood smoke bromine, lol
P McR - 2021-01-08
its just chemistry made into memes in a correct way not just some high school style puns
In the Shed - 2021-07-08
As a fellow Aussie chemist I relate to so much of what happens and what is said on this channel, it’s pure gold
Vulpeus System - 2022-05-18
@P McR rather than the cringe chemistry memery, this is based chemistry shitposting
