Making S4N4 Part 2 (Success!!)

Extractions&Ire - 2019-07-14

After the wild chemistry last time, can we get any product out? Spoiler: yes, but how?? Thanks Science, very Cool. Main channel video here: https://youtu.be/I-ZawsbYpmo

We are once again following this paper, on a smaller scale:
"Tetrasulfur Tetranitride, S4N4"
(Jan 1967) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/9780470132401.ch26

Nice clean crystallization! I guess you saw the Wikipedia article on S4N4 where they state "S4N4 is thermochromic, changing from pale yellow below −30 °C to orange at room temperature to deep red above 100 °C". This stuff can actually be yellow and still be the product you wanted!

@ExplosionsAndFire - 2019-07-16

I think the dioxane solution was a lot more red when hot during the soxhlet extraction too, so perhaps I was too quick to dismiss it. But the procedure calls for slow, room temp evaporation of the dioxane to avoid any explosions, and I didn't think it was worth that risk and excessive time unless I thought I was going to get a product out that was better than I already had

@mfree80286 - 2019-07-25

Ever hear of the Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments? You can get a copy in PDF, and while it's really oriented towards young teens it's full of some rather surprising things... like page 32 with a little blurb on making Nitrogen Dioxide in a test tube.

EDIT: Guess I could elaborate, it's from 1960 and has a lot of offsides info on unusual sources for chemicals and some really interesting low-budget equipment setups. Oh, and enough "hazardous" amateur chemistry to get it pulled...

You should release some of your more risky experiments on BitChute, where people care less about warnings. Then release a short YouTube video to advertise the BitChute one. If someone is capable of making S4N4, it's highly likely that they know the risks, everyone else just likes watching. Fantastic video mate, I love your content.
