An emaciated baby cries in pain. Thanks to food aid, he will probably survive. But how long can the country remain dependant on foreign aid? Prime Minister Meles Zanawi hopes that increasing agricultural production will end this reliance. However, economists have criticised the government for depending solely on agriculture. “You cannot continue to rely on one commodity…and hope to develop your economy,” states Dr. Berehani Nega. The problem is that Ethiopians are never able to build up a reserve before being struck by another crisis, and decades of food aid has eroded the economy’s capacity to operate without it.
