Isopropyl chloride (2-chloropropane) from isopropyl alcohol, hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride

OrganoLeptic - 2017-07-02

Today we make isopropyl chloride also known as 2-chloropropane.

I plan to use this in the future to synthesize a chemical that I believe has a sweet taste. But what will it be and how sweet will it taste compared to sucrose (table sugar)? Join me and find out.

The synthesis of cyclohexyl chloride on which this procedure is based can be found at either of the links below:

I’m just about to do this reaction as a step in a longer synthesis. Thanks for making this video, I had completely forgotten that Vogel had used CaCl2 for this instead of zinc chloride. That helps a lot cost wise.

When I make my video I’m going to do things a bit differently and I think it’ll be interesting to compare the yields and see what the trade offs are.

Keep up the good work! I’m glad you’re here. We need more good chem channels.

Question: How does Vogel's method compare yield-wise? Meaning react then distill versus removing product as it is formed. With the first I can set it up to run for X hours unattended, with the second I must stay with the rxn the entire time. As you mentioned the chems are cheap and easy to obtain so I can sacrifice yield for convenience.

Hey... make more videos please... I love your videos 😻

Awesome! Brings back nostalgic memories from the university!

Wow! Isopropyl chloride “the ghetto style”. I loved it. You did a really good job, man.

douro20 - 2020-06-23

Which is more dangerous, cyclohexyl chloride or isopropyl chloride?

Manuel Golindano B. - 2018-06-18

Mmm I added Cl2 to propan-2-ol, it's more easy.

What is Propyl [3-(dimethylamino)propyl]carbamate, Sir? Explain please, thanks you

Dima Miniailo - 2021-12-21

This is an ester with linear formula CH3(CH2)2OCONH(CH2)3N(CH3)2. What do you need it to?

👍

1-chloro 2-propanol is neutralized with concentrated sodium hydroxide. Would that work here too?

Firehoax - 2019-11-11

R Johnson sodium hydroxide is a very strong base unlike sodium bicarbonate. So it would probably react with the product. Also sodium bicarbonate is easier to get as baking soda

Wonder what came over before 34 C ?

Thanks

For the video? My pleasure.

OrganoLeptic what can be made from paracetamol?

Vivek Kumar Singh - 2017-11-05

Thank for ur reply..

fla playa - 2019-07-05

3,4-Methylenedioxy-n-methylamphetamine-2-Paracetamol could theoretically be made :) Anything can. Your imagination is the limit Science Is Kind of Cool.
