AN/SPS-53A
The AN/SPS-53A is a surface search radar operating in the X-Band and is capable of detecting surface targets and lowflying targets. It can be fitted with a 5 ft or an 8 ft wide antenna. The feed assembly, containing the slotted array radiating element, produces a vertical beamwidth of 20 degrees. The vertical plane beamwidth allows enough latitude to keep the target in the beam pattern during ship's pitch and roll.
The AN/SPS-53 was put into service in 1967 and replaced the AN/SPS-5 on some ships. A modernized version got a solid-state transmitter instead of the vacuum tube (probably a magnetron) and got the new designator AN/SPS-60 using the 8 ft antenna. Later the remaining AN/SPS-53A and AN/SPS-60 were replaced by Raytheons AN/SPS-64.
