ESR 220
The ESR 220 is a mounted on an all-terrain 8x8 transporter, operating in L-Band, 2D surveillance radar designed to provide early warning to mechanized troops in the battlefield. The radar is capable of simultaneously tracking 1,000 targets and features a planar array . It is a fully autonomous armored system with integrated IFF, and self-contained power plant packaged on a single vehicle. The system is operated by a crew of 5 and is capable of being fully operational within 2 minutes of arrival at the deployment site. The mast is 12 m tall.
ESR 220 is sometimes nicknamed “Thutlwa” (in Zulu language) or “Kameelperd” (in Afrikaans), which means both in English “Giraffe”. The radar was developed around 2000 and delivered to the South African army.
